I didn’t hear that (about the ugly) although I skipped around, but yeah, in the book she was portrayed as seeing her child as either a prop to make her look good, or as a boring burden - which is awful.

That poor dear sweet husband of hers. And the child, oh! :( And yet there is something greatly pitiable about Emma as well. That she completely lacks of any inward peace, gratitude, and the love of God Himself...

She loves no one. She wants to own, to consume. THe minute that Rodolphe had shown her the same devotion as her husband, she would have lost interest. She was a very unwell woman.

She was definitely unwell, and there are real people similar to her. But I would more say that she constantly turns to external things for fulfillment (clothes, marriage, lovers, shopping, kids, in the book she also had a very religious phase, etc)…and never gets that this won’t work, and that adults need to learn to fulfill themselves, and with deeper things like goals, true affection, purpose, community,…..and not by consumption.

I've always felt a little bit sorry for these types in this genre. Let's see...there is The Awakening and Anna Karenina...all from the same time period. I feel so ,so, so very sad for them. Such malcontent. Zero satisfaction in life without the intensity of a passionate love affaire.

@@DesertBluebells As someone obviously consumed with religious dogma, you seem to deny a rational definition of adultery, which, I reiterate, applies only to the person who is sexually unfaithful to his or her spouse. And you describe adultery as a "frightening" sin. If adultery is a "frightening sin", how would you describe torture, or, for that matter, genocide. You are a "tad" overwrought with religion, aren't you! Try a little critical thought, if you are capable of it.

He definitely committed a terrible sin. And you can label something "dogma" to try to make it seem stupid, irrelevant and small. But God's laws are none of those things. God's laws are TRUTH and binding.. no matter how much you try to minimize them.

Psych research shows that the feeling of all-consuming “love” and “passion” lasts about 2 years... max. Many think it should effortlessly last indefinitely, and when it doesn’t, instead of transitioning to a more mature partnership, think the relationship must be “wrong”, futilely chasing it elsewhere, over and over...thinking they are cheated, when it is just how life works. A recipe for unhappiness, as no person can give you your own happiness.
