Am I the only one who thinks a lot of 1980s period dramas adapted from classic literature are the most enjoyable ones to watch? Jane Eyre (1983) and this version of My Cousin Rachel are some of them 😍😘

I'm a major fan of the Burton/de Havilland version but this one seems very well put together. I think the story is a little better told so I'm keen on watching part 2, But in no way, however good this turns out, can it overcome the supreme acting advantage that the 1952 has. I can't think of any actor who, as a young man, was so gifted as Burton. And de Havilland was a classic Hollywood actress for the ages. Thanks very much for the upload.

With all the dreck being put out on DVD, it may seem odd that this excellent series has never been released on either VHS or DVD. It is probably for the same reasons that the even more magnificent BBC adaptation of "Rebecca" with Jeremy Brett and Joanna David has never been released: some complicated legal dispute over rights to the material. For whatever reason it is a pity, because "My Cousin Rachel" and "Rebecca" both deserve to be seen in fully restored DVD editions.

The BBC really did make some great period dramas throughout the 1970s and 1980s. I don't really like any of the BBC period dramas these days, there rubbish in my opinion except made Call The Midwife which i don't mind. My Cousin Rachel is another classic BBC period drama from 1983 it's a huge pity that it has never been released on DVD by the BBC or at least Acorn Media which have released a number of old classic BBC period dramas like "By The Sword Divided". The BBC's adaption of My Cousin Rachel really has been been forgotten about and If it has not been released on DVD so far then where did these copies come from?. It's a pity there is no end credits on each episode except the final instalment.

There are so many beautiful-to-watch period dramas on YT. The stone-cold, hard-faced lead actress creates an unpleasant viewer experience. She lacks any chemistry between herself, and the male lead. A deeply flawed film! I watched Part I, and could not continue. The miscast lead actors spoil what might otherwise have been another enjoyable period drama.

Saw this version years ago and just saw the 2017 version of My Cousin Rachel. Neither can hold a candle to the classic performances of Richard Burton and Olivia de Havilland in the 1952 film. Both were perfect in their roles. The 1983 version is faithful to the du Maurier novel but the acting is poor. The 2017 version has fair acting but deviates in many ways, major and minor, from the book's plot. I wish someone would upload a good clear version of the 1952 My Cousin Rachel to you tube soon.

You are in LUCK - the 1952 full length version with Olivia DeHavilland and Richard Burton DEFINITELY IS on You Tube - for free - there is also the "pay for it" version on You Tube - a quick search and you will immediately find it. The 1952 version is spellbinding and although 70 years old, not remotely dated - it still holds up and brilliant performances by the two leads - Richard Burton was only a mere 27 years old when it was filmed and at the very very start of his film career, relatively unknown in the USA - he is absolutely mesmerizing and INCREDIBLY sexy at the height of his youth - he absolutely SMOLDERS as Lord Sexitude - His Holy Hotness - oozing male pulchritude and sex appeal.....which makes it even more frustrating for the viewer WHY OR WHY doesn't Rachel just marry the besotted tormented man? Burton gives a masterful performance and portrays his character as utterly obsessed, besotted, bewitched by his mysterious cousin Rachel. At times he seems a bit of a madman, and at other times just so tormented while Rachel more or less strings him along - he is full of fury, passion, torment, brooding - very much in the mode of Lord Byron - a brilliant but doomed tragic hero. The ending is very complicated and leaves the viewer perpetually wondering - along with tormented Phillip wondering for the rest of his life - was Rachel an innocent or just a scheming manipulator? We will never know.

Omygawd.......Episode 1 is a real "Snooze-fest" and slogs along quite tediously, slow and dull for a full 46 minutes until Rachel and Phillip have their very first meeting. Although I adore Geraldine Chaplin and HER performance DOES manage to lighten up this turgid, boring film - I don't know if I can continue to slog through two more episodes. It is really ghastly compared to the brilliant 1952 original with smoldering, scintillating Richard Burton - he is a mere 27 years old and at the very height of his youth - I could not take my eyes off of him! His performance is mesmerizing - all fire, fury, passion - at some times he seems quite a a madman - and in other scenes, he is so enamoroured, besotted and bewitched by his cousin Rachel - all the pathos, torment Phillip has - Richard Burton absolutely NAILED IT. Combined with Olivia DeHavilland and an outstanding supporting cast - even though in black and white and 70 years old - the 1952 orginal is ten million times better than the 1983 BBC version which really quite frankly is a thumping bore. I love Geraldine Chaplin - but don't think I can bear to slog through another two hours of this muddled mess........I'd rather check the book out of the library and rekindle this world class tale of pathos, torment, tragedy and ill fated lovers.

Maybe it's my own mind but obviously Rachel killed the cousin and has plans on driving his nephew crazy as well, then off him in the same way with the excuse of a brain tumor but not before he falls in love with her and agrees to marry her. I'll continue watching the series just to see if I'm right.

If you read the book you would know that there was no way at all in DuMaurier's book to know for certain, and I repeat for certain, that Rachel was innocent or guilty. The author cleverly balanced everything negative about Rachel with something equally as positive. I don't know why people waste their time trying to figure out if she's evil or not. Most likely DuMaurier had no interest in clarifying this because she was masterfully working on keeping Rachel's evil and goodness balanced. And she did that so well that people are still wasting their time trying to decide now, 66 years later. Well done, Dame DuMaurier.

The Novel is Horrible Extremely Overrated as is this and every other version of it on Film. It is Horrible because it is poorly written. The Characters are extremely unrealistic. The Writing is Manipulating. The Author doesn't create a Mystery or anything convincing she has the main characters behave one way than another (Schizophrenia) for No credible reason other than to propel her contrived story. Neither men as she wrote them would be interested in Rachel they were both sworn bachelors. She would Not have had a chance with either one of them. I hate it when writers go to great lengths to establish Characters than have them do a 180, to make the Plot they want possible. This is completely manipulative and BAD writing.
