Good stuff. Im kinda surprised he didn’t spot the holes with the cnc. I guess it would require a tool change which is a little annoying.

What I meant was, while watching I was drooling over your gantry CNC machine, and you mention you used your laser cutter (another tool that I'm also envious of) like it was NBD. I thought that was humorous, that's all. Carry on!@@RobertCowanDIY

ha! yeah, cutting UHMW while talking about battlebots is a good afternoon.

One thing I found out the hard way. Use stainless screws fastened tightly. If you nick it with the tool, there is no catastrophic failure. Normal steel screws destroy a 20mm 3 flute solid carbide in a split second. Stainless is fairly soft. I have cut through them with out any issues. Nice job.

Huh. We actually nicked one on the first pass and it was just fine, even with the single flute cutter. I guess black oxide screws or even deck screws are harder than stainless. Plain old zinc plated though is pretty soft.

A makerspace I know splurged on brass screws for the same reason. same Idea, just even softer than stainless.

@@SkootehGotcha good to know! Step 1, don't run into the screws. ;-) I need one of those fancy composite nail guns. They shoot these composite plastic nails you can machine right through.

I really like the laser template idea. The way I've done it is to generate a program that uses a V bit to mark your screw locations. Then you can drive your screws in, and run the main program. Both methods def have their pros and cons

For sure. Normally I'd just model the screw locations in Solidworks and then peck them, but this was much easier, since we'd have to change out the tool to peck the hole locations. It was pretty inconsequential to just export the file as a DWG and laser-cut the template.

Cutting HDPE and UHMW on a CNC router is a lot of fun. I've had a lot of success using it for the gap in between wood and metal for RC projects. Nicely done!

For sure! You can just keep going faster and faster, it's so easy to cut. Workholding is the only real challenge.

@@RobertCowanDIY Agreed, sometimes the sheets are a bit cupped. I've had good luck with a vacuum table on larger thin sheets or smaller thick/flat pieces. Double sided tape or the masking tape/super glue methods have worked as well on smaller pieces.

@@CraigVanSickleAK Good to know. I haven't had good luck with tape, it doesn't stick well enough to get zesty with the cuts. But screwing it down has always worked, as long as its' not TOO tight, which causes warping.

LoL The slow right hand screen exit was a classic!❤😂 Can you reuse those chips for anything like… filament? Or used in a heat press to cnc later for repurpose? Do we see an Angus vs Cowan battle bots in the near future? ❤❤❤

Unfortunately, the chips aren't really useful for anything and they mixed with my other sawdust, so they just go in the trash, which sucks :-( Oh yeah, I forgot Angus dabbles in combat robots.

Just for future reference, did you use a 2 flute carbide cutter with some kind of aggressive helix angle....???

Check the description, the exact cutter is linked. I just did spiral or angled plunges, but nothing too crazy, just CAM defaults.

When competing there's some black plastic bolt on armor that covers up the access windows. You can see it at the end of the video. When driving the robot around at home the weapons are removed for safety and the access windows are exposed for convenience.

Could the actual leg be design with 1/2in radius next time? Well 0.25in radius so you can use the 1/2bit

Sure, it could be redesigned, but the rest of the bot is already made, so other parts would need to be modified. This is still the easiest since there are a LOT of other parts in the shuffler mechanism that are already machined out of aluminum.

I'm laughing with the name of the robot. I'm spanish and my father's name is Pepe and a good friend of mine name is Silvia! I think it sounds kind of funny the name, but I'm just wandering why that name for the robot?
