Machined Wooden Poké Ball w/ Concealed Hinge & Compartment

This wooden Poké Ball was a commissioned anniversary gift. The original idea was just a plain old Poké Ball on a pedestal, but then I decided that adding magnets and concealed hinges would be way cooler.
Note: Due to the time-consuming nature of the project and to avoid trademark issues, I am not taking orders to produce any more of these. However I am making available 3D models you can use to machine or print your own: www.winstonmakes.com/shop/p/p...

    This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Amazingly well done! I would love to see one made out of aluminum next time. Maybe even anodized to match the colors in the game! Regardless this is so cool and I look forward to seeing what else you make in the future!

    This is the first time I’ve ever left a review on a video. Just wanted to say that the time and effort you put into creating the piece as well as editing the video with your voiceover paid off. I loved watching this entire video and while I don’t have the skills to create the a poke ball like yours, it was fun admiring your process and listening to you explain it step by step. Thank you.

    I have always been super impressed with Starbond's CA glues. I was introduced to them by a friend, who is a luthier. He was introduced to them by another master luthier in the area. As one of the amazing tricks of the trade. I have been hooked since that point. They have been a great company to work with even if your just a hobbyist.

    I know this is a year off, but a CNC router if you use Fusions pecking tool path can absolutely drill holes with high rpm consistently and nicely in bulk. For those wondering, Pecking is when the bit goes up, then down repeatedly to take just a little material at a time with a plunge cut. If you have a dust collection system set up, on the upstroke your dust should be cleared from the hole, and the hole itself is "Drilled" at a rate of however aggressive you set up your packs. For 1/16" endmills I set my machine to take 0.0316" off per peck which is half of 1/16" of an inch. for a 1/8th I'd use the same peck when you start getting to bigger endmills you can take a little more off on each of the downmoves. That being said, do not trust my parameters, you need to figure your own parameters out for your CNC, and I highly recommend that when you are trying out new trick and new tool paths you play with them on scrap boards. To play with that pecking toolpath I used a bunch of scrap 2x4 pieces and drilled easily 100 holes to see what was going to work best / be cleanest.

    It has been 2 years since you posted this, but here I am, probably way over my head, attempting to use your example to attempt to figure out how to make a globe-sized(aka using actual globes to DIY it) Pokéball that opens to use as a "gift bag/wrap" of sorts for a few Christmas gifts for 2 young Pokémon fans. I'm not smart enough to understand half of this, but I am going to keep trying until I can figure out a good way to do the hinges and button without it opening too easily.

    For future attempts you should look into barrel hinges there like 8mm. I use them when making pen boxes that need a flip lid. Most of then can be pressure fit too, so you dont have to worry about drilling through

    I love this design, and everything about it except the finish in the Padauk, as seen in the opening image. Not sure if that orange peel was due to the spray finish, oils in the wood, or the pores. If the pores, in the future, you can seal that so that the pores don't cause flaws in the finish. Clear shellac sanding sealer does a really good job, helps pop the grain, and can be coated by just about any other finish, including the spray PU. If the spray, need to warm up the shop and then also sand it like mad. If oils (I don't think that's the case here), you can clean the wood with acetone first. None of that is to take away from the great design and beautiful present, here. Just some suggestions from a woodworker. :)

  • @WinstonMakes

    @WinstonMakes

    4 жыл бұрын

    It's mostly the pores. The finish wasn't my favorite, that triple thick spray poly is really only useful for face grain. Sealing would probably help though, I'll try that next time. Would probably do a thinner brush-on finish too.
