Machined Wooden Poké Ball w/ Concealed Hinge & Compartment
This wooden Poké Ball was a commissioned anniversary gift. The original idea was just a plain old Poké Ball on a pedestal, but then I decided that adding magnets and concealed hinges would be way cooler.
Note: Due to the time-consuming nature of the project and to avoid trademark issues, I am not taking orders to produce any more of these. However I am making available 3D models you can use to machine or print your own: www.winstonmakes.com/shop/p/p...

This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Amazingly well done! I would love to see one made out of aluminum next time. Maybe even anodized to match the colors in the game! Regardless this is so cool and I look forward to seeing what else you make in the future!
Seeing that sphere open and close is so satisfying
Bro this is ABSURD. I love it so much. 100% want one. I’m customizing a pokeball tin right now and came here for insight on the hinges. Nicely executed!!
Fantastic build Winston! =D
That is the coolest hinge I've ever seen, it's almost like it was made for making pokeballs
Dude, this is next level. Definitely one of my favorite projects of yours.
This is the first time I’ve ever left a review on a video. Just wanted to say that the time and effort you put into creating the piece as well as editing the video with your voiceover paid off. I loved watching this entire video and while I don’t have the skills to create the a poke ball like yours, it was fun admiring your process and listening to you explain it step by step. Thank you.
All the ladies go wild when I perturb it on a ferrous surface and it snaps towards an upright orientation in an under-damped fashion.

lmao yeah
I have always been super impressed with Starbond's CA glues. I was introduced to them by a friend, who is a luthier. He was introduced to them by another master luthier in the area. As one of the amazing tricks of the trade. I have been hooked since that point. They have been a great company to work with even if your just a hobbyist.
That'll be a great house for the ring when you propose to your gal. Like imagine kneeling and asking her with a pokeball. That'll be awesome.
I know this is a year off, but a CNC router if you use Fusions pecking tool path can absolutely drill holes with high rpm consistently and nicely in bulk. For those wondering, Pecking is when the bit goes up, then down repeatedly to take just a little material at a time with a plunge cut. If you have a dust collection system set up, on the upstroke your dust should be cleared from the hole, and the hole itself is "Drilled" at a rate of however aggressive you set up your packs. For 1/16" endmills I set my machine to take 0.0316" off per peck which is half of 1/16" of an inch. for a 1/8th I'd use the same peck when you start getting to bigger endmills you can take a little more off on each of the downmoves. That being said, do not trust my parameters, you need to figure your own parameters out for your CNC, and I highly recommend that when you are trying out new trick and new tool paths you play with them on scrap boards. To play with that pecking toolpath I used a bunch of scrap 2x4 pieces and drilled easily 100 holes to see what was going to work best / be cleanest.
Definitely the best thing on the internet so far this year!!
Totally amazed by this project! Even thinking that optimal or critical damping would detract from the piece, incredible!
Your problem solving capabilities are AMAZING! I sat watching this with my jaw dropped..... BRAVO!
The whole project looks amazing. The bonus that it looks like a real pokeball on metal is so awesome! Well done, what a great gift 👍
This is fantastic! I absolutely love the self-righting feature because of the magnets! I think I would have sat there for quite some time before I could convince myself to drill the holes for those hinges.
This so cool! The vacuum hold down is a great idea
This is your coolest project ever, and you’ve made a ton of cool projects over the years. I’m not even a Pokémon fan but there are so many cool techniques in this project that I want to make one.
This is amazing. Fantastic job. Your projects never fail to impress. Slow standing clap!!!
Consider using 1000 - 2000 grit on the wood and finishing with oils instead of that spray-on crap. Game-changing results!
i loooooooooove when the ball shaking around and it really feels like you just catch a pokemon suceesfully!!
Dudeeee that’s so cool. Kinda like the one that’s coming out in the upcoming game Legends of Arceus!!!!
Well done! What a great application of your skills and talent!
Seriously...this is such a cool project! Thanks for sharing your processes!
This is an awesome project! Nice job Winston!
Awesome Build!!
Aw yeah, the loack of outside hinges is the good stuff! :D
I love those hinges. Great job 😀
I'm going to agree with the audience!!!! Coolest design and execution yet!!
This looks so cool!
SOOOO COOOL! LOVE! Woodworking is SO COOL!
this is even more cool after the Pokémon legends announcement.
Nice video! Awesome design elements - hidden hinge, magnet plugs. Mahalo for sharing! : )
I really like your videos. not just what you do, but you get into the detail and then give it all, warts and all. I like that your thought process is out there for all to see. Hopefully this will inspire others to do more than they think they can, and be creative. Great job again.
Beautiful, and clever.
Thats awesome, would LOVE one lol. Ever try and do a Titanic box that splits to reveal a compartment? That would be cool.
that's pretty awesome, lots of attention to detail
That is amazing. So much work.
the pokeball capture movement is what i'm here for
So beautiful 😍
Awesome work!!
Really nice work.
this is my motivation to create my diy cnc machine , i want it to do this!!
As a woodworker yes it looks beautiful but it takes away the real fun using a lathe machine. That’s why I never commission anyone making something like this for me. Because I don’t little using the machine he uses. But it’s a great product. The fun you get out of a lathe is way more fun than make a computerized machine
OMG this is amazing! i wish those would be on sale!
this turned out awesome. a cool tip for hiding the gap is to sprinkle some sawdust over the ca glue. that will match the color perfectly(assuming you used the typical clear version of ca glue)
A cool gift !!
It looks fantastic your friends must have been ecstatic with it
You Sir are such a badass!! Love your videos and creativity and way you explain
Hey, dont be so hard on yourself. This is a piece of art! Creativity at its finest :)
Dude, awesome!
How COOL!!
Hey Winston, get one of those ball-tipped router bits (a literal ball attached to a shank, not a typical ball end mill), it's perfect for these rare situations where you need a concave surface perpendicular to the vertical axis. And Fusion can surprisingly work with it.
It has been 2 years since you posted this, but here I am, probably way over my head, attempting to use your example to attempt to figure out how to make a globe-sized(aka using actual globes to DIY it) Pokéball that opens to use as a "gift bag/wrap" of sorts for a few Christmas gifts for 2 young Pokémon fans. I'm not smart enough to understand half of this, but I am going to keep trying until I can figure out a good way to do the hinges and button without it opening too easily.
For future attempts you should look into barrel hinges there like 8mm. I use them when making pen boxes that need a flip lid. Most of then can be pressure fit too, so you dont have to worry about drilling through
Nice job really amazing work
that thing would be the gift for me
Nice touch on the logo 👍🏻
Well Done! I have projects on the list for both brass engraving and wooden spheres. Thanks!
You sir, just earned a subscription.
amazing!
This was an amazing video! I hope my CNC skills will get here one day. On a side note if you need a good lacquer try Deft products. You can find these at Ace Hardware store. They dry fast and leave a beautiful finish.
i would genuinely love one of these
This is amazing! I would love to buy one......
Very perfect
And if you throw it hard enough you can just defeat your rival trainer with its sheer mass alone.
black CA glue is so handy for art projects
Yep, I just subscribed to patreon.. Thanks!!
Really nice job and finished product...now if only I knew what a Poké Ball was....not a clue....and I'm ok with that.

Relax dude, great job
Great job! Somehow I will try too! Now i'm doing a touch probe. (you can see it on instagram) It's a very useful tool for a cnc machine.
amazing
Steve, I choose you, always ❤️©
love it
Amaze-BALLs!
gonna catch that girl!!
You should do the old new pokeball from the game coming out next year.
Hipster Pokeball
Nice! You sure can do righ rpm drill, just use peck cycle.
GIMMI!! HOW MUCH? That looks so awesome.
MAKE A LOTTT, Selll man, just sell those, big money there
Another great video! What was the "long reach" bit that you used to cut the halves from the stock?
probably explained this in one of the older uploads, but how do you line up the object to start milling the dome without using dowels?
Now throw it!
It would be a cool way to propose to a Nerd girl!
Not a Pokemon fan, I couldn't tell my Magicarps from my Chumbawambas (that's a Pokemon, right?), but damn, this is a sweet project! Started thinking you lost some sanity there with Comic Sans though, but it all came together in the end! Very cool!

😂 honestly, I wouldn't know if chumbawumba wasn't actually a Pokémon. I lost track of all the new ones they kept adding.

I like the concept of this project, and was wonder can you make one that a cat can sleep in it. If so how much would that be ?
Awesome job! Love the magnetic stand! I've made a few Poké Balls myself, but not out of wood. Have you considered making the Arceus wooden steam powered Poké Ball?
Goodness, Winston, I would pay big money to do a “Vulcan Mind Meld” to obtain your Fusion 360 knowledge. I’m pretty good with Carbide Create and moderate with VCarve, but Fusion 360 is a bit too complicated for me… Anyway, this is beautiful!
I love this design, and everything about it except the finish in the Padauk, as seen in the opening image. Not sure if that orange peel was due to the spray finish, oils in the wood, or the pores. If the pores, in the future, you can seal that so that the pores don't cause flaws in the finish. Clear shellac sanding sealer does a really good job, helps pop the grain, and can be coated by just about any other finish, including the spray PU. If the spray, need to warm up the shop and then also sand it like mad. If oils (I don't think that's the case here), you can clean the wood with acetone first. None of that is to take away from the great design and beautiful present, here. Just some suggestions from a woodworker. :)

It's mostly the pores. The finish wasn't my favorite, that triple thick spray poly is really only useful for face grain. Sealing would probably help though, I'll try that next time. Would probably do a thinner brush-on finish too.
@Psychlist1972

@@WinstonMakes You can do the spray, if you go thinner like you said in the video, and sand between coats. I brush/pad shellac, but I do like spray for most everything else.

@@WinstonMakes The dewaxed clear shellac sealer I like to use is Zinsser Seal Coat
I'm not a pokemon fan, but even I want one of these.
excellent project, but man, that finish kills the wood. Try a oil and wax so the beauty of the wood isn't lost.
Now for an apricorn ball
How are you liking the Maker knife btw?
@WinstonMakes

I carry it almost daily. There's a few minor things I'd tweak, and I wouldn't abuse it as much as another knife, but it's still handy and very easy to carry around. I like it's slimness.

f*cking awesome!
What is that opening song? I love how smooth the pokeball looks is when it's closed. If I recall, the second generation had pokeballs made out of Apricorns.
this is awesome. i'd like to make one with aluminum on one of my machines. can you share the f3d files?
amazing work ... of course ... amazing finishing ... of course ... it just can't be called carpentry when ninety-seven percent of the work was done by a computer ...

call it what you like but don't discount the basic skillset required!
Dude, that looks awesome. I would love to have one of those things myself. I don’t suppose you can help me out with that. I’m not really a wood carver so I wouldn’t able to get anywhere close to creating that masterpiece without some help. I know that you won’t make more on account of time consumption, but would it be possible for you to send over the 3D design for it so I can try to make it myself? I’m sorry for being rude, I’m just a really big Pokémon fan and would love to have that work of art.
Awesome!! Do you have a link to these hinges?
