Hey Josh, just wanted to say thank you for your reviews. I watch tons of tech channels and it seems like most these days just focus on shooting good b roll and production value, but few actually give genuine useful advice to make a purchase decision. keep up the awesome work!

While the Air laptops by default do only support a single monitor, I wanted to let people know there are ways around this. I use a Dual HDMI DisplayLink adapter from OWC. Its a USB-C device that gives you a few extra HDMI ports to run two extra monitors. My main monitor has USB-C Display Port with power delivery so I can use just a single cable to connect. It also has a built in USB-C hub, so I plugged the OWC adapter in the monitor then my two other displace into that adapter. That lets me attach my Air with a single cable for power and to drive 3 external monitors. This solution would also work for a Macbook Pro or a Windows laptop for a single cable solution.

Came back to decide if I wanted an Air 15 for development work. You're the only one who covers the info I care about like how much code can I fit on the screen. For what I do the Air is more than fast enough, the M1 in the original air already compiles code like 3x faster than a similar intel laptop.

  • @aelaan12

I just purchased my 14" M2 MAX with 32Gb ram and 1Tb SSD because it was on the Apple refurbished site for a decent price. I bought it when the 15" was announced, and I immediately dropped the thought of upgrading because of the very valid reasons you mention. I just want to think of the 14" M2Pro MBP and compare it to the 15" MBA. The MBA is a great machine, don't get me wrong, and I am not poo-poohing it. As a developer and system admin I simply need a system that can run containers without hassle, I need a good screen for consuming video and for long days staring into the box. I used to have a 16" but I just did not think about the memory when I bought it, my mistake, not gonna happen again. So far, in the past three weeks, the 14" has lived up to the hype. I think the 15 inch is a great laptop for people that need the screen real estate and the space on the keyboard deck. I do see the 15" coming down in price a little already.

I have purchased the Macbook Pro M1 14 over Air M2 15 because of 3 reasons, display is MUCH better on the Pro, I occasionally game, and here in Australia a 16 GB/512 GB Air 15 is $2800 vs $2300 for Macbook Pro M1. Also I feel from a longevity perspective Pro would fare much better because of it s screen and performance.

GREETINGS FROM SPAIN! Your videos are very useful to me; a few years ago I chose a lenovo 5 , I think it would be gen 5 (with ryzen 4800 and rtx 2060), and both the pros and cons you gave were correct. Anyway, to buy a lenovo you have to do a master because between the infinity of models and similar names and then that in each region change the specs compared to those you evaluate, it's crazy. What I appreciate most is your advice on what to look out for and which specific model to choose or which display has turned out best or worst. Unfortunately it was my failure when buying my lenovo as there were two types and in the end I couldn't find the best quality one in Spain so I settled for the one I had (it lacks a lot of brightness and now I'm obsessed with the next laptop having >400 nits). It's a pity we don't have a best buy in Spain or Europe. The prices you usually show for the US are incredibly better than what I can find in Spain, including reconditioned ones; I think that even paying extra fees for transport would still work out well for me. In the next 3 months I have to evaluate if I choose a good 2023 lenovo (options: Yoga Pro 9i 16'' ; Legion Pro 7i gen 8; Legion Slim 7i with AMD processor or Legion Pro 5 Ryzen 7745HX ) or look for the Asus Zenbook 14 that you reviewed or even give a chance to my first Macbook refurbished and go for the MACBOOK AIR 15 M2 as you explained good enough for light tasks.

Thanks for a honest review. I have the base model 15” and it is great. I don’t do heavy video editing just office apps, web, and email. Upgraded from a 2019 intel MBA. The extra screen is a game changer. And this laptop is phenomenally light weight and sturdy. I still kept my 13” since is still runs great although haven’t used it since. May eventually sell or give it away. These base model M2 airs are great for most everyday users. If you are a content creator or edit a lot of video then you may want to upgrade the ram and ssd but honestly it would be a waste is you don’t actually need it. Apple does a great job with their memory management on these new chips. The 8 gig of unified memory is actually equivalent to the 16 gb of memory on most intel laptops. Reviews that say everyone should upgrade ram and ssd regardless of use and trash base models are just pretentious. My base model 2019 MBA still handles everything I throw at it and storage was never a issue because I don’t gunk it up with useless apps and programs and utilize I cloud so my work is easily accessible from all my devices.

I have both of these machines and I am so torn on which one I prefer. The 14" probably does make more sense because you are getting so much more for only a little bit of extra money. One thing I did notice that varies from your findings is that you gain more screen real estate if using the same scaling. if both machines are set to default I get about 4 to 5 more rows on excel. if I move both to the more screen option, I also still get the same result. I think at the end of the day if you are doing more office, email and some light photo editing etc the 15" is a dream. If you push your computer more then 14" is the way to go. I also found the keyboard to be slightly better on the 14". I have the 1tb 16gb ram version of the Air and the binned M2 Max version of the 14" with 32gb ram. I had previously had the 16" M1 Pro and while a awesome machine, I found the size and weight deterred me from bringing it out of the house often.

For computer science students do you recommend the 16 GB and 512 GB model. Cause that would be 1600 dollars with a 150 dollar gift card while the refurbished M1 Pro 14 inch MacBook Pro is 1539 dollars, and then the decision becomes really hard. I don’t think the school work and internships would be that intensive for the pro model but I don’t want to risk it. Want to use it for masters as well

I'm surprised you didn't mention the M1 Pro 14" as it is also cheaper than the 15". The 15" MacBook definitely isn't meant for pros in this regard, but it is the perfect laptop for "air" usage. Also I'm running a 1920x1200 text rendering on my M1 MBA 13" with BetterDisplay. I just like having more space on my screens and my eyes can handle it. It works for development pretty well.

The MacBook Pro 14 is very much compelling versus the Air 15. There's so much more power for a little heavier and smaller screen size device. I'd get the Pro 14 if it were the only laptop I'd have...if only I had the money.

As someone who recently completed a post grad data science course, 8GB RAM is not good enough. Assignments escalate quickly in scale and I had to deal with datasets with millions of lines. Ran a statistical analysis and I literally thought my MacBook hung. It took a full 6 mins to complete the analysis and display the matplotlib charts on Jupyter notebook. RAM is the issue for the base 15" for any developer no matter how junior they are. Then they would have to contend with the 256GB storage which quickly fills up with assignments to submit.

I went with the MacBook Air 15 for my software development job. Absolutely love it since I travel around a lot. Personally I struggle to think how any developer (defined as anyone bellow the 95th percentile of power users) could max out the pro’s or even the air’s cpu, but then again I am a backend/cloud first developer

Idk. I think performance needs to be kept in perspective. Even the M1 Air beat an Intel MBP 16” in almost every area. The M2 Air is fine for most people doing most tasks, up to and including demanding things like video editing.

But at what cost? For 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD, you can get a better laptop with the M1 MacBook Pro 14-inch for $1,500 or LG Gram 16-inch from 2022 for $1,300 with 1TB adjustable SSD. Both offer a better CPU on the multi-core level.

I would still argue that for light use, over 1500€ is too much. I bought my laptop for under 600€ and while it has a very bad screen and much worse battery life (still 6h+ thanks to Ryzen), it's definitely worth over paying almost triple for a better screen and more battery. Of course, then there is the OS/repairability, we all have our own OS/repairability preferences, but I do not include them since different people will think different things.

I use my Air 15" for only very small development tasks, but quite a bit for Lightroom including AI-based image optimization like the Topaz tools. Find the M2-Air very good for that being an enthusiast amateur. Of course if I would a pro photographer I would need every bit of time saving when processing or exporting and go with a Macbook Pro instead. That said, I don't consider my use exactly "light use". I do stuff with it.

Hey Josh, I'm a Computer Science student living here in the Philippines I badly need a laptop but I can't afford one, the living conditons here are tough right now. I'm just wondering if you have a spare laptop or if any of you here reading my comment have one, it doesn't need to have any high specs as long as its working it's fine. Sorry for the trouble I'm just doing whatever I can to survive. Thanks a lot.
