Apple just refreshed their new pro Mac lineup and for the first time has an updated apple silicon Mac Pro and a new M2 Ultra Mac Studio on the top end of the pro lineup. However, you may want to consider skipping both of those models for what I think is the best pro Mac in the entire lineup, the M2 Max Mac Studio.

I have an Intel 13900k with NVidia RTX4090 for myself. I bought the M2 max studio with 38 GPU core and 1TB of storage for my wife. I just cannot get over how much I like her computer. Powerful enough (more than powerful enough) for gaming and 100% totally quiet. I still like my computer for its power but I am so impressed with this studio and I always look at it walking by her office. I would even say I am a little jealous!

I ordered 2 of these this week for my office. The only downside was the storage. 1GB storage should of been baseline for these machines as I had to upspec both which kind of sucks. I was tempted by the high end mac mini pro - but the 32g in the studio and cooling tipped me over the edge. Thanks for the great content.

I agree with your assessment. I run a professional recording studio and went with 64gb of RAM. I’ve only used it for a few hours so far and I can tell that 32gb would have been perfectly fine. 64gb however gives me some future proofing and extra horsepower for the densest of projects.

I primarily use Logic so I never had an issue with 32gb, however getting the 64gb will future proof me for the next 6+ years. @@tomalexiou9573 I’ve definitely seen videos online recently showing that 1TB will give you a pretty good speed bump compared to 512gb. That was part of the reason I went 1TB. Also my Mac Studio is using around 300gb of storage with all my plugins, samples, etc installed so I would’ve only had roughly 200gb of free space as opposed to 600+gb of space with 1TB. IMO just go with 1TB if you can still update your order. I highly doubt you’ll regret having more storage 2-3 years down the road.

If I buy a new Mac in the next couple of months it will absolutely be the base Mac Studio. It's brilliant. I currently have the el cheapo M1 Mac mini ... and it's the best Mac I've ever purchased and it's also the cheapest. However, I should have bumped the RAM from 8 to 16. On the current M2 Mac mini by the time you bump the RAM and the SSD (to the speedier one) ... you're close enough to the price of the M2 Studio that it just makes sense. -- By the way ... probably not fair to compare the prices of laptops and desktops unless you include the cost of a monitor with the desktop.

So, I bought the m2 pro Mac mini last month for music production w/16gb of RAM. I compose music for film and tv and I use mainly midi vst instruments, 3rd party libraries, and drag and drop audio files. Yesterday, I got a notification in Logic Pro X that my RAM was maxed out, and I only had like 4 tracks running on it. My question is do you think the M2 Max Mac Studio will be a bigger and better jump from what I currently have? And how long do you think it would last me before having to upgrade my computer again? Thanks in advance!

Question for you or for anyone who picked up this model. My Macbook was dying, so I ended up upgrading to this model last week, and it is just excellent and quiet. My main issue has been a 'warm' smell from the back that my wife described as "alkaline." I'm unsure how to describe it, so opt for her description. The first day, I could smell it from my chair (the unit is on the back corner of my desk), but now, after a couple of days of use, I can only smell it if I move right next to the unit. I looked on discussion boards and whatnot, but I haven't found anything about this. Everything runs normally. And some have said this is a 'new computer' smell. I'm wondering if you noticed something similar on your unit?

I'm not sure if you meant 'base model' as in the Max instead of the Ultra, but otherwise, the 30 -> 38 core upgrade for a couple hundred bucks seems almost a no-brainer. That's over a 25% increase in GPU power for not a lot of extra money. The 512 GB to 1TB SSD upgrade also gains quite a bit of storage performance, though the base is probably fast enough for most anyway.

Apple needs to make the Mac Pro more expandable and customizable. It should have upgradable and expandable RAM and storage, not the same SoC that their smaller systems have. So should the Studio, for that matter. Would their ARM-based system performance suffer greatly from offering this? If so, is it really a worthwhile transition? I like their Mx Macs for their efficiency, but I don't like how it's increasingly a hermetically sealed gizmo that you're expected to simply dispose of rather than open up and tinker with. It's a step in the wrong direction for home PCs.

Yep. External RAM, more PCIe lanes, and at least two 4xPCIe m.2 NVMe SSD slots. The RAM is not on-die anyway, so it’s more a matter of packaging and bringing those memory channels off chip and putting DIMM slots on the motherboard. Also, figure out how to offer a quad “Max” CPU. Make it a real Pro class machine. It’s a good machine as is, but offers almost nothing over the Studio, while costing $3000 more for the same configuration. Makes for a very expensive, large, and heavy case currently. Of course, they don’t want to do that as it would demonstrate they could easily support external RAM, and the chip would be more expensive because of the larger packaging and extra pins. But it would make it a Pro class machine.

I think the Mac Studio really is Apple's "new Mac Pro". They just decided not to call it a "Mac Pro" because after the misstep of the 2013 Pro, and the subsequent back peddling they did with the 2019 Mac Pro, Apple felt it was better to simply create a new nameplate in order to not invite comparisons. Though at this point, I think it's pretty obvious the era of the expandable Mac is basically over. I would be surprised if the Silicon Pro is not discontinued altogether sooner than later, now that Apple has kept their promise of migrating it too.

Studio is a small team who needs a lot of processing power versus a Hollywood Studio who needs access to stuff like PCI slots and very niche requirements. Professional equipment (in that sense of the word) has so many crazy things that are so insanely expensive for relatively mundane things. So Studio I think makes sense. It's possible that they expected to have an "extreme" chip, one which "required" the big tower form factor. But I think there is more to this story than that. Clearly, looking at the hack job they did adding PCIe, I don't think they had real plans to create a serious Mac Pro. Because if they did, the M architecture would support PCIe as a first class citizen, which it doesn't. The way they pushed this product out (just talking feature set here) it really doesn't look like they have any real commitment to platform.

If you use blender, or other tasks that are GPU bound, the Studio would be much better, but for most purposes, even most video editing, it’s only going to be “somewhat” faster. In the more extreme cases, the Studio might be 2x as fast, but typical case will be 10%-30% faster The one notable difference is that the Studio won’t thermally throttle on long tasks like the Air will. But in almost all cases, that’s less than 20% difference in time.

Good video, but I kind of disagree with the point you made that the M2 Mac Studio is better value than the 16 inch MacBook Pro. Sure you get the little additions you mention like slightly better performance, more ports, etc. But for $1k more the MPB adds an amazing 16 inch XDR display (for me this is already worth the 1k difference, since Apple sells the 32 inch Pro Display XDR for $5k), better speakers, a pretty good keyboard, an amazing trackpad, and the ability to work wherever you want without needing to be plugged in. I mean if you bought the mac studio, and a mediocre monitor, speakers, trackpad and keyboard that would already be an extra $500. I'm saying this because I've been using the M1 Pro base model 14 inch MBP since release and I'm amazed how for $2k you get an all included workhorse machine that you can use without needing to buy anything extra and it just works so well and has an amazing display. I really think a lot of people underestimate the display, speakers, trackpad and keyboard on MBPs and that they should be taken into account when considering the value of the product.

I think the sweetspot is Mac Studio M2 Max with SSD upgraded to 1 or 2 TB. 32 GB RAM should work great for all "semi pros" and "prosumers". Maybe - MAYBE - that 64 GB RAM will be good to pay for if you plan to use that Mac Studio for 5-10 years or more. Futureproofing. But I feel that it's much better to spend the extra money on larger SSD in Mac Studio than more RAM if you wanna have a "good deal". What I think about is swapping on the SSD. With 64 GB RAM you can run Mac Studio really really heavy and no swap on the SSD. With 32 GB there's gonna be no or pretty little swapping at "pretty heavy load". I'm really glad that M2 Max starts with 32 GB RAM and that it cannot be downgraded. I'm planning to buy a new desktop Mac soon and Mac Studio with upgraded SSD looks like the best model and configuration for me. I think everybody should buy Mac Studio with at least 1 TB SSD. You gonna fill that 512 GB SSD so fast! The upgrade to 1 TB SSD is not that expensive. I also feel that "M2 Max with more GPU cores" is not worth the money for average users. If you're a real PRO user you gonna go for M2 Ultra anyways with 2x cores :) M2 Ultra is "M2 Max Duo". Everything is doubled! Even RAM. The only sad thing is the strong US dollar. That makes ALL Macs more expensive in other countries. I don't know if all or most tech youtubers from USA are aware of that... The strong US dollar - is - a big problem. Apple's products are kind of expensive because of that - outside USA of course. All Mac customers in USA are lucky of course!
