M2 Pro Macbook in 2024 And Why You Shouldn't Future-Proof Your Gear

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I want to share with you my experience with future-proofing my gear, my laptop in particular. I had few Macbook Pro's over the years and two years ago I upgraded to 16" Macbook Pro with i9 processor and 32gb of ram. I hoped that I will future-proof my laptop and will use it for at least five years. Unfortunatelly things didn't go as I planned and I had to upgrade my laptop way sooner. So in this video I will talk about this experience as well as unbox my new laptop and also I will tell you why you shouldn't buy M3 laptops if you considering getting a laptop from Apple.

    I've had Macbooks going back to '03 with my first being a PowerBook G4 15" aluminum and swapped out 6 times in the last 20 years. I gotta say, the M1 14" I got last year felt as special as the first one, after turning it on. Truly impressed me.

    Nice to hear your such history with Apple computers! So from your experience one Apple computer should last about 3,3 yrars 😁 Anyway I agree that M1 was a leap forward, but since then I think it is more marketing from Apple and their statless graphics that shows how better is each newer M chip comparing to the last one. But still not M2 nor M3 doesnt provide significant leap over M1 comparing how was M1 to Intel processors

    The M2 pro based MacBook Pro models 14 or 16 inch became amazing deals even for power users. The difference of price with M1 series is very small now and give a you a few nice uograde in performance and quality of life (hdmi, wifi , Bluetooth, ext screen support) nothing crazy but important. I thank Apple for retiring the m2 just 9 months after release

I mainly do software development with very occasional video editing. Which one do you recommend (considering the M2 pro is a refurbished one and I want to use the laptop for at least 5 years)? thanks, any help is appreciated :)

    Sounds almost exact as mine situation, I dont see the point in M3 laptops at the moment. As I researched usually refurbished usually are perfectly fine. Mine was without any sign of use. You just need to test it right away to find if everything fine. But I think after Apple repairs laptops they test it also. I just dont know how is demanding software development, but I think M2 pro will be more than enough

    thanks for the video. I found your opinion very useful . As a dev, I wanted to upgrade to M3 which just released but I didn't feel like I needed that kind of upgrade. I had a macbook pro Intel Core i5 16gb ram 512 GB SSD 2018 until last month that traded in for the offer on bestbuy macbook M2 Pro 13 inch 24gb ram and 1 TB SSD at $1045. it works amazingly good and it saved me at least $500 - $700. with the same spec for M3 it's gonna be at least $1000 more which I don't think it is worth it. For all I need is a better RAM more than 16gb to perform coding along with testing, opening 30+ websites for doing researching and video calling for meeting. the M2 MBP does fulfill my need and it's a lot cheaper than I expected.

I am a business student and I do lots of coding and video editing. Which is better ? I am switching from the dell inspiron 5310 with intel 11320H . First MacBook so I really care about performance and battery life. Which is better between m3 base MacBook Pro or m2 pro MacBook Pro I want to hear your experience using this laptop in terms of battery life and performance as I have heard battery life is worse on this model but I’m not sure as I am switching from a dell intel machine

The option to change Ram or Hard Drive on Apple laptops is gone long ago, but even so, on laptop you wont be able to exchange processor or graphics card, even on windows laptops its not possible. So buying a laptop you need to keep in minds that along the way you will need to change it in order to upgrade, you wont be able to upgrade it like desktop PC rig 😊

    I like the space black color of my new MBP M3. I'm a visual person and if I'm upgrading I want something that actually looks totally new rather than the same old looking laptop I've had over the last 16 years (since the 12" MBP). Plus the larger charger, more ports, and more cores is a big plus. Got mine with a 1TB drive, that's my idea of future proofing.

    See, those are the reasons I mentioned in the video and I think companies made us think this way. Especially colorwise, Im glad I dont have that problem anymore the need to upgrade to get something in sloghtly refined design. Because since 2012 the design of Macbook pro has only refined, not revolutionised much, but Apple makes people beleave that the new color is mega feature. i actually like all my macbooka just in og silver color as it doesnt show scratches much and hides fingerprints well. But hey, we all should do whatever makes us happy, so enjoy your black macbook pro!

    You are right my friend yes... I am guilty of always wanting the best, latest laptop, I use photoshop very heavily, daily, but the reality is that is makes no difference if I have 12 core, 14 core, 30 core gpu or 38 core gpu, as the programme hardly ever utilise all these cores, and, when next years model comes around I am likely to upgrade again... So buying the mid to top end of last years model is the way forward for me now. Just bought the M2 Max 14 inch, with 2tb and 64gb ram for 35% less than the equivalent M3 Max. Just gotta stop giving away money needlessly

    good points but i really feel like youre saying because intel was so much worse than your apple chip macbook future proofing is bad, but I want to say if you look at the speed increases of late stage intel chips and compare them to any apple chip the apple chip would run circles around that intel chip. Intel macs where designed on 86 and ran much hotter than apple macs and to this day apple chips beat speeds and performance. Another thing if you notice arm chips being put in windows machines now we clearly see 86 is just not as good for laptops, like if you get a m3 max macbook rightnow you in 5 years will be fine because the increase of performance from m1 to m3 is about 30% so really future proofing is a matter of your idea of needs in a system if you get a system you think will just do good enough for the things your doing now this is not future proofing, buying in excess so that when you need it in future it's there. Just look at m1 max speeds vs m3 max speeds keep in mind there have been no nureal engine changes the next expected big thing but how many people were buying a mac for ai then the ones who were are tey surpirsed by that fact if you buy something with the excess having no use thats more future proof. (god bless the usa)🌎

  • @ShotsByJev

    @ShotsByJev

    14 күн бұрын

    Thank you for such comprehensive comment! I want to clarify that I am talking about futureproofing comparing i9 macbook not to apple silicone ones, but to my previous i7 macbook, so i9 compared to i7 didnt provide as much of a boost in performance compared that it cost one third more. So my main point was that now looking for apple silicon mac you shouldnt overspend to get a bit faster chip, because compared to how much you will have to spend more you wont get as much of a performace boost or you might not even need that boost at all. And again thats exactly what I am saying, dont futureproof and buy the gear with excess performance with thought that you might need it in the future, just get what you need now and if in the future that wouldnt be enough just upgrade. I dont call this futureproofing.

    I totally agree, except for one thing, let's say a brand new basic M3 pro will last 4 years and cost 2.6k€ (at least in Europe), while a M2 pro refurbed cost 2.1k€. Given a lifespan of 4 years (the max I got from my macbooks over the years), and the fact that the M2 is already 1 year old, the cost of the M3 per year is 650€, while for the M2 it's 700€. This gives the M3 a slightly advantage. This, and a 2 years warranty vs just 1 year for the M2. And a better battery. So in the long run the latest looks like a better investment. What you think? I'm making the decision coming from a late 2019 i7 with upgraded ram and gpu, so any suggestion is higly appreciated!

  • @ShotsByJev

    @ShotsByJev

    5 ай бұрын

    Well, a bit strange statistics, first of all, if your workflow doesnt change you can use same computer for more than 4 years. Unless battery degrades and stuff, on both new M2 and M3 laptops it is the same. Then again. I bought refurbished M2 Pro for 1599$ (with all taxes and delivery to europe the final price was 1790€), and its performance for me is plenty enough for editing photos and 4k videos. So unless I start editing I dont know 6k videos this would be fine the same as M3 Pro would be fine as well, but would cost me way more. Now some actual statistics. In 2019 I bought 15" Macbook Pro i7 16gb of ram 512gb for 2399$ and sold it in 2021 for 1290€, so in two years this laptop lost about 1000$. Now in 2021 i bought 16" 32gb 1tb for 3300€ and now in 2023 it is worth around 1000€ which means in two years it lost 2300€. The calculations are estimate due to different curencies and me writing it on the fly, but you can see, that cheaper Macbook retained more value than maxed out version. So at this point I dont see any reason to buy a laptop dor 2.6k if the one for 1,79k can do everything you need. Regarding warranty it is only in Europe we are used to 2 years, in US it is one year, I had now 3 brand new apple laptops and none of them had any issues, so I would not worry about that. Also my refurbished one doesnt have any signs of use at all. Regarding batteries in both they will be brand new and personally in M2 Pro it is plenty enough. I now often take it to coffee shop without charger, work on video or photos for 4hours and still have almost half battery left, so it is already huge leap comparing to intel laptops and thats enough for me. As I said in the video, for me futureproofing and choosing more powerful laptop than you actually need didnt work out well, so now I just take what I actually need, so the same I would suggest for you, just think if M2 Pro will be enough for your tasks and if yes go ahead and save some money. Sorry for this long reply :D

  • @fede_romanello

    @fede_romanello

    @@ShotsByJev i actually appreciated the long reply! For maxing out the specs, I totally agree, I was concerned about new generations. You’re not editing 6k now, but you probably will in a couple of years. And for issues, I got many. The i7 16” i own now was refurbished, and the motherboard fried just two months before the warranty ended. My previous 13” died, even if it was 5 years old. The one before, a 15” 2013, had gpu issues after less than 4 years. So it definitely happens. I haven’t considered the remaining value when you sell it tho. Most of my mac died, so no value, and the i7 16” lost a lot of value being the last intel mac already one year later. So it really depends on luck and new releases. Don’t get me wrong, I agree with not maxing out the specs, I’m just thinking loud cause I need to decide what to do. Btw, so you got yours from the States? I always thought it’s not convenient with import duties, in italy at least. I must check again!

    Oh, last thing, no, I really can’t use the same computer for more than 4 years, it never happened to me. First, work flow keep changing, so I need more power. New cameras, new video and photo needs… second, new software updates. Of course you don’t need to upgrade, but if you share projects with other people it’s much easier if you stay up to date. Third, all my macs have a drop in performance after a few years. I don’t know how it works, but it happens. I make an estensive use of it, so it may be the reason.

  • @ShotsByJev

    So if you dont tend to use your computer for many years then I also dont see the point to overspend, buy what suits your needs now and if after 2-3 years you started to do something that your computer will start to struggle with you will be able to sell it and buy new. Dont forget that M3 isnt that much more powerful, its like 15-20% at most, so after few years your task might get even to demanding to M3 and again you will have to change it

Just remember that one foot contains 12 inches. In practice 6.46 feet is actually 6 feet 5 inches (and a half). Otherwise written as 6"5'

    There's nothing wrong with future-proofing your tech. It's probably buying tech at the RIGHT TIME to future-proof. I've had my 2015 13-inch MBP until now. By 2018, I wanted to buy a newer MBP but didn't have the funds. When the M1 was released, I wanted the to buy the first M1 13-inch MBP but still didn't have enough funds because of other priorities. So I started saving since 2020. After 3 years, finally I was able to buy a M3 Pro 14-inch MBP because the sellers here don't want to sell me M2 Pro units and also bought a M1 Mac Mini with 16GB brand new for only $450.

    You say there is nothing wrong with future-proofing but yourself dont do it either, your 2015 13 MBP wasnt future proofed model, it just suited your needs if you was able to keep it this long, then yiu bought M3 Pro just because you werent able to get M2 model, so basically you confirm what I was saying in the video that you dont need to buy latest and greatest, because less powerfull options still will do what you need them to do

    @@ShotsByJev Yes I stand by it when I said there’s nothing wrong with future-proofing your tech. And you’re missing my point which is “buying a replacement machine AT THE RIGHT TIME.” If I bought a maxed-out 2019 MBP, then I believe future-proofing that particular machine was a mistake because it was a move at the WRONG TIME. I really have to be careful and prudent when it comes to spending on Apple products. I think my 2015 13-inch MBP back then was future-proof for at least five years. I only started noticing hiccups around 2019. As much as I wanted to spec it out, the 8GB RAM 256GB SSD model was what I can afford at that time. Unfortunately, refurbished Macs are not available in my country. But you said that my old 2015 MBP is not future-proof but it's 8 years old and counting? How is that not future-proofed? When I bought my M3 Pro, I was thinking of “having it and not needing it (at the moment)” instead of “not having it when I need it”. Yes there’s no need to get the latest machine. But there’s a significant difference when upgrading from Intel to M-series vs. upgrading from M1 to M3. Those are different situations.

    I dont have anything against future proofing if it works for others, I just shared my experience with that. Then you say about buying replacement machine at the right time, but the right time doesnt exist. When I bought my 16 MBP with Intel I didnt knew Apple will release M1 later with huge performance boost. So you cant predict wether it will be a good purchase long term or not. Even if we forget about M1 as I mentioned in the video, my 16 MBP couldnt handle video editing for me, so it wasnt future proofed and those extra specs didnt give me anything as I was forsed to work through proxy files as I would have to using my older 15 MBP. I think you a bit confusing the term of future proofing. Future proofing means that you now buy more powerfull machine than you actually need and spend more in order to be able use additionall performance down the line (great example with gaming pc’s when you buy maxed specs and play everything on Ultra settings but also in few years you will be play everything on high settings) O dont know what you used your 13 MBP but I guess it was just enough for your needs and if the needs doesnt change it will be enough even after 5 years. In my case after two years I had more needs that my machine couldnt properly fulfill. If I take my 16 MBP only for copywriting for example it will be good even after 10years (as long as hardware wont brake). So thats my point, you overspend, take better specs than you need at the moment in order to use them down the line, thats what I call Future proofing Now with your M3 Pro machine you actually future proofed because as you say yiu got power that you dont need at the moment, but might down the line Lastly upgrading is everytime the same, it is the problem you having with current machine and which one should those problems solve. Because you dont need to upgrade just for sake of upgrade, you should upgrade when you actually need to, and if M1 machine does fine I dont see the point to upgrade at all. For some even Intel is fine, it would be for me if I wouldnt started video editing 😊

    @@ShotsByJev Well we can agree to disagree. For me, the right time to buy my MBP replacement last November came and I took the opportunity with the availability of the item and finances. I guess it really depends on what we do. I do coding and graphics design so I don’t think I overspent when I bought my M3 Pro. I bought it not because of what tech KZreadrs said. I did sat and carefully thought about it. As for my 2015 MBP, it is now just good for basic office applications. The MBPs that were released after 2015 had some issues so I really had to wait it out until the M1 was launched. With these machines in place, I’m looking forward to sticking with them in at least 10 years. 😅

    The problem with this video is you're conflating future proofing with maxxing out hardware. Future proofing is a concept that long predates youtube. It's been built into PCs and Macs, especially desktops, but even laptops, by providing multiple memory slots, as well as slots for expansion cards, to be able to add components and RAM, and even upgrade the CPU, as much as the system is designed to accomodate. Eveer since Macs switched to soldering all components and not allowing ANY user upgrades, Apple has forced users to consider SOME amount of future proofing when buying new systems, since there's NO upgrade path for them once purchased. Obviously not everyone needs to max out their system, but selecting enough RAM since Apple silicon is an SOC is now essential, and 8GB RAM is widely accepted as being too little for moderately demanding users. Storage upgrades are still possible externally via USB-C, but if you underestimate how much RAM you'll need, or believe Apple when they say 'our 8aGBis as good as 16GB on Windows', that buyer is in for a rude awakening.

    Well your mentioned PC upgradability isnt future proofing. Because back in the day you could buy a PC rig (and still can) and after one year or two just upgrade it depending on your needs. So you dont overspend in the beginning. And with laptops especially Apple you have to think in advance, because you wont have that option. The only way to upgrade will be to sell your laptop and buy new one. Ofcourse future proof concept existed before youtubers, but I think youtubers exaturated that often showing of maxed out versions of gaadgets

    @@ShotsByJev many laptops still offer upgradability in the form of user upgrable RAM, and an additional slot/bay for another SSD. Apple is unique in not providing this option for any of its systems. While many lower end PC laptops aren't upgradable, those designed for business and enterprise use are. So the problem you're encountering is more unique to Apple than any Windows PC maker. (I'm not going to bother discussing Chromebooks.)

    @@davidsteinberg9523 to be fair ram or ssd upgrade doesnt provide much performance boost, only if you want to save money on buying and then upgrading straight after, but it is not entirely fair towards companies and they are free to fight with that and Apple actually has authority to do that, but I would say from their side it is as disrespectful towards consumers as it is disrespectful from consumers to buy a laptop with less specs and upgrade ssd or ram straight away

    Lol your problem is that you use apple, if you used normal tech you wouldn't have this problem and it's just funny how apple users can't figure this out, especially in 2023-2024. Future profing works, you don't need to take the very top, but something above average, something second to the very top. A good example of future proofing is the 10 series of nvidia video cards, which came out 8 years ago, this series had a 1080 video card, which was future-pfofing at the time, and wich is still usable to this day. In fact, if you don't need modern features, such as RTX, just need a some video card in medium assembly, then it's still better to buy an old 1080 than any new card. I assembled my PC with future profing in mind, I've been using it for almost 4 years now and I'll bet it will last another 5 years without problems, and some of its components will migrate to my new PC I also use a Lenovo laptop (although their laptops are shitty) which was future proofed, bought in 2011 and it was fine even in 2018, but sadly it died in 2021 of old age, if it weren't for that, I'd would be still using it for light to medium tasks and some gaming Even very end of this video is kind of funny because you basically bought a future prooft laptop, only it was future prooft in the previous generation, it's like if you bought it back then, than you wouldn't be making this video

    I can say whatever I want, but you cant provide windows laptop with mentioned specs because it doesnt exists. I couldnt find it. Well there exists Dell Xps 13” that is a little bit cheaper but in some ways it is worse than macbook while in other few eays better, so you wont be able to say that Del Xps laptop is definitely better than Mac. And there isnt other laptop that would be in all ways the same or better than macbook pro with m2 pro and be cheaper. If there is please tell me which one. Regarding companies, you know I dont care. First of all how do you even know what each company uses? Its more like you are talking of your imagination. Different companies use computers for different stuff, for your surprise lots and lots of creative companies uses Macs instead if Windows machines. Second, I use what I like and not what uses others, I used Windows pc’s all my life up untill I started earning money and bought myself my first used Mac to try it out. Since then I never wanted to go back to Windows. So I just recommend you start to do what you like and not what others do. Dont be afraid to explore and try other things because you might like them too.
