M113 with Chaffee Characteristics | Wan Cheng 2 萬乘二

The Republic of China, exiled in Taiwan, was a key US ally in East Asia during the Cold War. Following the defeat in mainland China and Hainan during the Chinese Civil War, the Kuomintang political party and Republic of China were able to hold out in Taiwan. With mainland China now part of the People’s Republic of China, the preservation of this strategic ally in the region meant that the Republic of China would receive large deliveries of American surplus equipment to build up the Republic of China Army and prevent a potential invasion attempt by the People’s Liberation Army. Despite international setbacks, such as the international recognition of the PRC and exclusion of the ROC from the UN in October 1971, the republic remained a staunch US ally. From the mid-1970s onward, serious attempts at creating armored fighting vehicles would be started within Taiwan, likely due to the fear of weapons becoming more difficult to import due to the warming up of PRC-US relations. These attempts generally started by combining parts of different American vehicles. One of these would be the Wan Cheng 2 (萬乘二), combining a modified M113A1 hull with an M24 turret.

At first glance, maybe. The M113 is not a good combat vehicle. It's a battle taxi or box car. Me strapping a cannon to a Ferrari doesn't make ita good idea. But a 113 with an AT gun is better than just a guy with a slingshot.

When the British Army 'retired' the Fox armoured car some turrets got placed onto 'retired' Scorpion CRVT to make the Saber others were grafted onto FV 432s to create the Fox on a Box concept I have absolutely no idea of the level of official approval for these constructions but they're certainly interesting and show a way of prolonging the service life of AFVs/APCs

Greetings and applause from Taiwan. Great content you've made! I'd like to add some supplementary information regarding the title of the project, 萬乘. The second character actually has two pronunciations in Chinese. One is "chéng", meaning "to ride", "to chase" or "to multiply (numbers)". The other is the meaning used here, referring to the unit of counting chariots (i.e., it is a numeral classifier for chariots), actually is pronounced as "shèng". So as a whole it is "wàn shèng".

At this point it would make sense to use a remotely operated turret such as CROWS. Put an automatic grenade launcher, heavy machine gun, or minigun on it. Relatively low investment and low weight added to keep it nimble. Need to keep mobility good otherwise it defeats the point of a light armored tracked box and would be better off with a truck instead.

For the M41's hull with the M18's turret, it's a strange conversion, given how more powerful was the M41's original gun, both had the 76mm, but M41's one was more modern and powerful, plus the turret of it was totally enclosed and better protected.

Mind, the hulls were sourced from M42 Duster, 40mm AA platforms, not the M41 tank. Taiwan had M18 turrets and weapons, the US Army was selling M42s cheap at the time, and so Taiwan saw the Type 64 as a way to get more use out of the still viable M18 components. Also was good practice for their developing domestic tank industry which was looking to be based primarily off derivatives of the M41.

In the past ROCA still had the ultimate goal of military reclamation of Mainland China, and light tanks were more maneuverable in Mainland's southern region & would have thus been useful not only for reconnaissance but also infantry fire support whereas more-powerful tanks like the M48 were expected to see relatively limited use until the reclamation pushed into the Central Plains.

Yes. The story appears to be that it was literally just the non-functioning turret of a wrecked Panzer IV sitting on the hull of a bergepanther (a turretless Panther hull used for recovery purposes) to disguise its use as an improvised command vehicle for a German battalion. By putting a "turret" on the turretless bergepanther, the hope was the enemy would consider it just another tank among the many, instead of the battalion commander's personal vehicle to be prioritized.

I love how Nationalist China is portrayed as some benign Liberal Democracy ......... And them having the seat in the UN was always laughable , would be like Puerto Rico claiming the US's seat 😂

Don't look at is a tank, more a STuG for the modern age. Think fire support in an M113 mounted mechanised platoon/company. Keeps your logistics and routine maintenance simpler than if you mixed in a separate vehicle type. Also despite the costs of modifying it, still cheaper than a propper tank.

For what Taiwan was facing at the time, it would've been a potentially useful fire support vehicle. Like they said, the first wave of any Chinese invasion would've been amphibious light tanks whose armor would be very much vulnerable to a Chafee's 75mm gun. Along with infantry, against whom gun that can fire high explosive firing gun is useful. If their Chafees were worn out and didn't have a proper replacement in the pipeline, the idea of mounting the turrets on something else as a stopgap made sense. It's just that they didn't have enough M113 hulls to spare for it to be worthwhile.
