M1 Carbine at 300 Yards

Спорт

Laser-measured 300 yard target shooting with the .30 M1 carbine, open sights; featuring multiple camera angles with picture-in-picture. The bullet trail will be visible for several shots. This is a 1943 Inland from General Motors, 18" barrel. Ammo is 110 grain FMJ from Remington, muzzle velocity of 1990 FPS. The velocity drops by nearly 50% at 300 yards.
This open-sight shooting exhibition illustrated the accuracy potential (and lack thereof) of the M1 carbine at the extreme range available on the iron sights.
This session was on private family property where I shoot on a regular basis. Targets are setup on a hillside that is backed by large tracts of uninhabited private property.
Spotting scope is a Nikon 20-60x82mm, #8311.
IPSC target (18" x 24") used during most of the video is from Challenge Targets. The 12" plate is from Mike Gibson Targets. All targets are AR500 steel, 3/8" thick.
Filmed with two Sony HD AVCHD camcorders; HDR-CX560 recorded at 28 mbps 60p and HDR-CX110 at 24 mbps 30p. Edited using Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11, MP4, 30p, 16 mbps.

    I have my Dad's WWII M1 Carbine, it is also made by Inland. I bought my first M1 at a yard sale back in 1974, and paid $10 for it, all taken apart in a box. I was 16, and had no ideal how to put it together. So one Saturday morning, I walked to the courthouse square, where there were always lot's of Vet's hanging out. I stopped at one of the benches, and ask if anyone could teach me how to put my M1 together. All of them offered. The one that did, checked each and every part carefully, and laid them out in order, and put the gun together. I spent 3 hours with this small groupe, and by the time I left carrying my M1 over my shoulder, I knew well how to take care of my M1!! I walked all over town that day, and talked to many old timers about my gun. Not a single freak out over a boy with a gun!! I even talked to a couple of policemen, that wanted to shoot my gun!!!

    Yep, those were the days. Used to hunt and/or do pest control in the local vineyards and orchards in Almaden Valley, CA, back in the 1960's. Ranchers and vineyard owners would pay us to keep the pest population down. Made lunch money, and learned to shoot. Then I'd go to school with the rifle in my truck. Notta problem til the ranchers sold to the real estate developers. Developers are second in the world's oldest professions. .

    Did you live in a small town, or small medium city? I am a veteran, my father and grand father and a whole lot of uncles and cousins and one aunt. I believe in universal military service. Having said that, do you have any idea how many incompetents there are out there running around armed? We had to score in the high 90% range just to qualify. I learned to shoot before basic, but I learned how to do it right in basic. You are EXPECTED to hit your target. Back then it was simple, anyone on that side you shoot, anyone on this side is a friendly. Now it's more complicated. Anyone in possession of firearms should have to be trained in how to use it safely. How and when. And how not to fire it when you should not and did not want to. For which universal military service would be a good start.

    October 2018: I'm really over the comments from people who lack critical thinking skills and don't understand the concept of private property, shooting at distances longer than their driveway, and shooting in low-light conditions. Relative to those final shots on the disc, I could see the target well enough to make the hit.....this wasn't total darkness. These targets were on the side of a hill, backed up by other hills on a massive amount of uninhabited property. Just because you can only see what I presented via the camera angles doesn't imply that is all that I could see. And, if you think people are just roaming around mindlessly on a large tract of remote private property, you're imagining something that isn't reality here. I have been walking this tract of land for most of my life and know the boundaries and natural backstops, which is more than anyone watching the video can say. ANYONE. And just to be safe, boundaries and points in between are checked before, during, and after shooting sessions. This is one of the safest channels on KZread, and I am under no obligation to explain every single camera angle, shot, time of day, etc. for those who cannot grasp this concept.

    Well in 1967 I got as a Christmas present a Universal M1 CARBINE. Installed a scope and off to the range and the 100Yard targets. Once I dialed it in with Browning ammo 110 gr I shot 1 1/2" groups. Then Browning ammo was no longer available so the only other choice was Remington 110gr. Next time out at 100 yards finished off the Browning with 1 1/2" groups. Loaded the Remington , now I'm shooting 2 3/4" groups? Thats when I learned ammo is not all the same.

    I have many modern guns, but I keep a inland 1944 m1 carbine for home defense. It's nearly impossible to jam, has zero recoil, weighs 5 1/2 lbs with 45 rds on her, hits like a .357 magnum with soft points, is easily capable of very rapid fire, will pierce all level II vests, and doesn't look like an evil black "assault rifle" to a jury or the DA. At cqb distances, it's just as effective as an ak or ar.

  • @armynurseboy

    Yup. Most of the criticism with the M1 carbine is when folks compare it to the M1 Garand. The carbine was not meant to compete with the Garand. Inside it's intended engagement envelope (100m) it is very effective.

    The Immortal For close quarters such as an urban apartment with multiple neighbors a M1 would definitely be a better choice because the AR15 with SS109 or even XM193 FMJ is going to over penetrate and put close neighbors at risk and they really have some cool new ammo choices for the M1 out there now so in that respect and with at least a 30 round mag I gotta agree with you. If you happen to live in a rural area however where you are far from neighbors and have some acres, the AR15 is the better choice in my humble opinion because you can engage possible assailants at close and intermediate distances with greater accuracy, speed and energy with so many options to make it serve your exact purpose such as using different uppers. It's really cool to just pop those pins, put in the same magazine with either the .300 blk, 50 Beuwolf, 458 SOCOM, 6.5 Grendal or the most commonly used 5.56\.223, in there and see the different results on your targets and the different capabilities and "behavior" of the cartridges. I definitely do love a nice M1 carbine and other pistol caliber carbines though and will definitely have to pick one up when I can find a good one somewhere.

    Not sure where you get your statistics, but the .30 carbine is WAY over .357 velocity - almost 2,000 f/s with a 110 grain soft point. A 100 grain .38 special leaves a pistol barrel at 1,150 f/s, with a third of the muzzle energy of the .30 carbine, and .45 ACP at 850 f/s - less than half the velocity of the carbine, with again, about 1/3 the muzzle energy of the carbine. .357 magnum is about 60% of the muzzle energy of the carbine. The old wive's tale about bullets bouncing off frozen clothing in Korea has long since been proven wrong, and there are even videos on KZread proving it. The problem was a short sight radius on the carbine, so the bullets missed their target, rather than bouncing off it. Check out KZread videos; the carbine was an effective killer; in the battle of Okinawa, carbines accounted for about 1/3 of the Japanese casualties. If they had been as flawed as that claim, they wouldn't have still been issued in Vietnam.

After I discharged from Korean army, when I went to the reserved-force-drill, I used M1 Carbine. But every M1 Carbine was very old and humble. The m1 carbine was good at shorter ranges but was lighter and easy to use I liked it but was aware of its limitations. The weapon he is using was old it depends on the particular weapon. And who reconditioned it. By the way it had a bolt retractor and you could easily cure jams.

    My first rifle was an M1 Carbine. I’ve owned lots of rifles since then but the Carbine is still my favorite. A relative who was in the National Guard gave us 25,000 rounds of military ammo and most of it went through the Carbine with minimal problems. We had over 400 acres and set up some 55 gallon drums on the hillside across from our front porch. My favorite target was the drum at 500 yards. I’d fire then a second later would hear the bullet ping the barrel. No doubt if it was a hit or a miss. The original open iron sights from the standing position with only an occasional miss. Lots of practice plinking. That was 50+ years ago, 20 years old and right out of Basic Training. Now I’m happy with my AR at 300 yards. At 72 my hands are still steady but my eyes aren’t what they once were. Even with my bad eyes I still don’t use a scope. Unfortunately, my Dad sold the Carbine to a neighbor for $25. Now if I want to replace it I’m looking at $2,000 for a nice one.

    Amazing accuracy for an MI Carbine, I have one that belonged to my late uncle who was a marine officer in the Pacific theater in WW2, its a beauty, but I am happy to get on target at 100 yards. You have to remember that these were used to replace Non Comms and officers side arms which was the iconic .45 M-1911 and while these carbines were vastly superior in terms of accuracy over the sidearm pistol they by no means could match the accuracy of a 30.06 M1 Garand which you clearly demonstrate here. That's amazing!

  • @Greyswyndir

    MR. Gentleman Sir Why the switch from the 1911 (awesome sidearm) to the M1 Carbine? I understand that the carbine would have more kinetic energy and better accuracy then the 1911 but it's still odd. I mean, why replace a pistol with a rifle? There has to be something on paper about the reason for the switch? I'd love to read it.

  • @snarky.conservative9182

    @snarky.conservative9182

    I am not quite sure myself as the M 1911 was and still is a superior weapon. The feeling however from the top was that a light weapon capable of firing 30 rounds with a longer reach and better accuracy was needed for non coms, army engineers, medics, cooks etc. Don't sell the carbine too short, it has the stopping power of a .357 magnum and few people survive getting hit by a .30 caliber round there is also the additional merit of being able to carry more ammo that say for an M1 Garand .30 odd 6 rounds. M1 Garands were damm heavy, I mean damm heavy, I have one and I would not like to drag it around all day especially in winter gear. I hate to admit it but a better rifle that came too late to have an impact on the war was the Russian SKS, although heavy for the round it fired, it was much lighter than the garand, fairly accurate, easy to take down and clean and built like a Russian tank. You could also carry more ammo of the 762X39 round. I go hunting with mine and have taken several deer out to 115 yards, not bad for a 70 year old design and it was every bit as good as the M1 carbine but admittedly a tad heavier.

    MR. Gentleman Sir I've shot an M1 Carbine before, it was a beautiful little rifle, very comfortable, accurate and a joy to shoot. I'm definitely not knocking it. It would be the perfect rifle for troops not directly on the front line, better then a pistol if the shit hit the fan, etc. And yes, I've heard the Garands were damn heavy, but they really packed a wallop! Oh yeah, I was under the impression that they M1 Carbine came with a 15 round magazine? I thought the 30 round mags were an aftermarket product?

  • @snarky.conservative9182

    @snarky.conservative9182

    9 жыл бұрын

    Greyswyndir You are absolutely correct! I have an aftermarket mag with 30 rounds and at times it does not cycle, not good if you are in combat! The original just came with 15 rounds. In so far as a SHTF rifle my Garand is a monster, any human being hit with a 30 odd 6 round is going to drop and out of the picture regardless where it hits. It can kill a Grizzly bear out to 300 yards, thats one mean rifle!

  • @Greyswyndir

    @Greyswyndir

    9 жыл бұрын

    MR. Gentleman Sir Sorry, I was speaking of the M1 Carbine only being issued with a 15 round magazine. I don't know very much about the M-14 other then what a famous marine said about it (he thought it was an excellent rifle and that it had gotten a bad rap because of the combat philosophy put forth at the time of the Korean war). I'm familiar with the WWII version, and besides it being a fairly heavy gun, it was a very good main battle rifle for our troops. I think the M1 Carbine would be an excellent home defense rifle but I wouldn't want it for a main battle rifle. I'm not overly impressed with the M-16 either, though I think the M4 variant is very capable for what it was designed to do (operate in Urban environments and close quarters combat). I really think the M-16 is underpowered for being the main battle rifle of the United States military.

    a friend brought me to a huge range sometime around 1984 or after.. I only had my M1 carbine. we were mostly just looking over the range and he wanted me to see that a few guys that shoot for the Olympics' were practicing there for the 88 Olympics. I'd never shot at such a big range so we drove way down and put a target up at 300 yards. we went back to this hill you stand on and the Olympic guys are all quietly laughing at me. I put the sights to 300 yards and lifted the rifle to my shoulder to hear those guys roaring in laughter. when I looked through the peep hole I couldn't see the target... the front blade was wider than the little 20 inch target it was like shooting at a dot.... I was like oh boy now what do I do... I see the Olympic guys with guns and equipment that looked like it was from out of space... I felt very out of place. they were all starting to point their spotter scopes on my target. I could see the stand so I aimed at the stand then raised the gun up about 18 inches above the target and pulled the trigger. the guys with the spotter scopes screams he hit it, he hit it!! now they come over and are looking at me ( I was like a 20 year old kid then) and looking at the gun. one of them says your just 5 inches above the black.. so I raise it up again and aim the same thing but two inches lower ( basically blind and guessing) and take a shot. they yell he it again! they said your still high???.. then he tells me I'm just above the black and they go nuts and I'm trying to play it cool like I do this all the time. .. I was shocked I hit it twice... so I shoot and they start screaming he's in the black he really is .... so I said like a cocky ass**** I figured I would be....... then I think they must be messing with me.... I knew I could NEVER hit that target again if I hit it so I said take care guys nice meeting you. we drove down and got the target and sure enough I had two close to the top of the target and one just barely in the black. that target is framed in my house still to this day... one of the best days of my life... LOVE THOSE CARBINES

    Nice video. Fun to watch. I especially like the vortex in the air behind the flying bullet. Cool! I own a IBM carbine in mint condition. But it's a parts gun. I'm from Holland and carbines are very popular here. Official it was in military use until the arrival of the FAL in 1961. But it kept in military stocks till the mid '80's. Also the police used it until the MP5 was issued, also in the mid '80's. In those days, you could literally buy a nice revised M1 from your nearest police office. My dad bought his M1 in 1988 for approx USD 150,- German made police issue DAG ammo costed approx USD 130,- per 1000.Still today, parts are cheaper than dirt and a nice maintained M1 will go for less then USD300,-.Most parts are from the army and all the stocks are 1950-1960 Dutch made. The stocks are a direct copy from the late M2 stock and made from birch.Ammo these days is expensive. When the cheap army ammo source (all 1987 made DAG on stripper clip and in bandoleers) and police ammo (in nice 50 round boxes) dried up, most owners sold their M1 because the 'cheap&fun' factor was gone. Most M1 owners reload for their rifles now

    Hope I don't initiate a snob attack by saying this, but I have a late model Universal M1 Carbine. I know, not "the real thing" and stamped metal parts suck, but it shoots great and is reliable. The fact that it only cost me $200 in new condition at a pawn shop is really nice though! With the more modern 4 groove rifling it shoots really well. It's accurate enough to make whatever you're shooting at, at 300yds to at least duck for cover (as seen in this video) and 200 meter chickens at the range are just boring to shoot at and no challenge, even off hand. Not much energy left at 300yds anyway. With LBT 130gr gaschecked flat nose cast bullets it is a reliable deer slayer within it's effective range limit of 200yds. Almost turns it into a .30-30. Almost. The only bullets it doesn't like are the 110gr softpoints, (which I think are a joke anyway), because the softpoint hangs up on the feed ramp before chambering. It stays in the truck and has been the doom for a few coyotes as well. I mostly shoot Magtech 110gr hardball as I got a bunch of it on sale a few years ago from Midway. The M1 was meant to replace the 1911 in segments of the military that were not combat units and thought to be a better self defense weapon for those not trained for combat. It serves that purpose well out to 200yds, imo, and was what it was designed for. Great videos of the M1 Carbine, both at 200 and 300yds.

    I keep one mainly for sentimental reasons, because it was carried by a soldier in the second world war, and in a pinch it would probably serve nicely as a trail rifle. The carbine is often damned with faint praise, because the bullet it fires is underpowered, but inside a hundred yards it is effective, and you surely don't want to be hit by one.

    god i want a m1 carbine, but my sks will do instead, the ammo is only $5 a box too and its a stronger round to start with.

    dragdragon23 my sks just has a terrible trigger, i even smoothed it out but it still is waaaay worse than my mil spec ar trigger, but im use to it and can shoot under 3" MOA consistently at 100 yards with iron sights. id like to stretch it out to 300 yards and se what it does.

    dragdragon23 i would trade my sks and my .17hmr for a c39 ak, that would be a sweet deal for the other person value wise.

    A very good thought on a trade, Try if there any bits out there what you said! My ak is a norinco from the 80's, great rifle!

    I grabbed a Bullseye, first 500 made, ran to the range with PMC, my buddy thought 'good luck', ragged hole five round groups at 50 yards, for the two of us off of sandbags, just overwhelmed! So, revisiting this video is just terrific. We will return to the range for the 200 yard berm soon.

    when this carbine was made, it was used against moving human targets by men hyped up by adrenaline and fear . I am sure it did what it was ssupposed to do.
