Yeah I know what your saying, on a similar note I got a big 4’ poster of Queen’s News Of The World tour live on stage and Freddie was wearing short short Candy striped shorts and no shirt and i’m thinking they were just typical rock gods and my dad walks in my room and goes…WTF is that…had no idea, I was about 13 or so.

Seeing Motley opening for Ozzy in Jan of 84 as my first concert was a life changing experience. Truly mind-blowing.

One thing about Mick's solos: back in the day, they weren't as flashy as other bands, which had blazing speed and pyrotechnics. But, being blues-based, Mick's solos have arguably stood the test of time better than those other bands.

At the time the rock/metal guitar world was all about "shred shred shred, speed speed speed" but honestly... nobody but other guitar players and wannabes really gives a shit about that. The average music fan just wants a cool riff and something they can sing along with. Guitar nerds think of EVH as a shredder, but the real reason he was so huge is because he played catchy riffs, hooks and melodies that someone who never picked up an instrument could remember and hum to themselves. Mars was very different from EVH of course, but he just didn't fall into that shred trap. He wrote melodies and hooks, and that's what usually makes a song a hit. Even today the world is FULL of shredders who can tap all day and play fast as hell... but they never get anywhere because they can't write a song or memorable solo to save their lives.

The Crue stand out amongst their 80's peers due to them literally being a "Motley Crue".. An eclectic group of guys with different backgrounds and styles and Mick especially as he was older and 70's guitarist into the blues, playing in an 80's hard rock/metal/glam band.. I don't think the Crue could have existed or had their success without those 4 individuals!. People like to bash Nikki, but they fail to realize (or don't know) that he writes All the lyrics and is the main songwriter, regardless of his simple bass lines!..

Ten seconds to love is such a badass hooky song. I love the whole album and back in 83 my buddy and I used to listen to that tape on my boombox on the way to grade school everyday and in class we would practice drawing the Crue logo along with the Van Halen logo. Loved that 80s era

Tom Werman was one of the quintessential producers of the 80s. ...some of the biggest and tightest sounding albums of the era/genre.

Mick Mars will always be the sound of Motley. When you hear that guitar you know who it is.

I personally saw Vince's back line at one of his solo club shows, and he had vocal correction gear In his rack, and harmonizers too. Not a big deal cause many bands use this stuff, and vince neil was a very nice guy to meet. Just wanted to giv u a shout out, I believe your story.🤘👍

People always mention what an underrated guitarist Mick Mars is. Which he is an exceptionally great guitarist. But nobody ever mentions what an incredible drummer Tommy is. Sixx is a better song writer than he is a bassist but his bass playing is quite adequate. Just my opinion

Pretty spot on. Nikki was definitely the weakest link musically in the band, even though he was the main songwriter.

I remember watching a show called Night flight on the weekends as a kid. I do remember when live wire video came on and I thought it was a horror movie but was very memorized by the video!

Dude i was a kid and totally remembered night flight. There was another, night flix, night tax???? I nont know. I just remember that was a beautiful time. Maybe its just the childhood part of it verses the now grown up part of it and the fact that what i didnt know then i know now and its not as interesting as as i thought it was going to be and then we die. .......yea.

Very honest interview, thanx! Will probably never look at this album the same after this. Love Crue, and ...yep, Werman is a genius in his own right! Long live Metal!!

The initial marketing for this was pretty clever. They come across all evil and dark and end up a full-on glam band.

Which the "whole glam thing" , the CRUE themselves (OR Nikki and Tommy FTM) WANTED for the band for Theater of Pain ect. cuz they thought, "Hey we're the CRUE. We can do leather studs and spikes OR we can dress up as women and STILL kick ass!" @@jamescon55 Girls and Dr. Feelgood were better than any of the first 3 records IMO, and both were heavier, without needing a goofy pentagram to scare christians (aka shoot fish in a barrel). Mick's guitar playing is at its creative peak on Girls and Feelgood. I agree with you re: the stadium tour. It was shitty and paltry to criticize bands doing farewell tours that don't end up being farewell tours, the do exactly that, themselves...

Great Album !!!! Producer Tom Werman is a great producer. He got a great sound on that record.

Hell YEAH! Tommy Lee was at his prime during this record. And to hear Tom Werman talk about how solid Tommy was and virtually NO editing during SHOUT, and you can even hear that on the album. THAT, is a guy that was/is put on THIS earth, to play the drums! Wish Tommy Lee would have gotten into MORE hard rock drumming through the latter years than the hip hop garbage but....? Oh well. And far as getting much about "the actual production of SHOUT..." from this interview?.......Oh well on that too. Lol

I still recall 1st time I heard Looks that Kill on radio, n loving it- not even knowing it was Crue. I had the debut album, but this song sounded different, way better. Shout at the Devil remains on my top 50 fav album list. The intro is fantastic! One of the best intros EVER. It STILL sounds amazing

The producer does a hell of a lot during a recording. Nice to hear some interviews with the producers, and the producers that engineered some of these great classic albums..

I immediately knew his name as being the guy who produced Cheap Trick. I mostly listen to metal now but I grew up on Cheap Trick (i'm 53 now). It is amazing to me how good Cheap Trick sounds even in today's standards. What a great producer. So cool that you were able to interview him! I also enjoyed your other interview with Beau Hill.

Cheap Trick and Motorhead are the two bands where you can find big fans of theirs in ANY rock crowd. Hardcore punks, metalheads, glam rockers, people who just listen to Top 40 radio, everyone.

The bass on the demos for the first two records is all straight, on the releases there's a lot more fills and is so tight with Tommy. I ve wondered if someone else played the bass on them

Producers are often overlooked for the albums they produced that ended up being MASTERPIECES!!! Shout At The Devil and Stay Hungry are PHENOMENAL albums. I know that Twisted Sister did the Stay Hungry album again years later called Still Hungry which is decent , but the original in my opinion is much better. I love listening to interviews with producers because you will hear things about what really went on because band members would never tell the whole truth because of fear of their reputation being ruined.

I hate the fact that when they reissued "Shout At The Devil" on CD they got rid of the "pentagram" cover. I know they didn't want any more controversy with retail stores but they could've had the original cover inside so fans can flip the booklet around if they want to.

Reissued the cassette! I had the 4 way split portrait cover as a little kid in the mid 80's. So, as far as most kids copies ( vinyl wasnt "hip" in the mid to late 80's) it was the portrait. You can still find pentagram LP's in second hand stores and record bins. How come I never see "Too fast &Shout" on cd in the stores? Awaiting reissue?

Mick's guitar sounded like a chainsaw to me as a kid.. I later learned he is tuned down a whole step to D standard. IDK if that's what made that sound or not but it was always my favorite guitar sound for a long time. Some of the best riffs ever

Well , i dont know now. Lets see, i was only 8 when sout at the devil came out, well, and im not sure. It depends. Was it released in 83 or 84. Regardless i fucking loved it- at that age. Now going back tothe comment that no one had this sound at the time. We know there were other metal bands out there at the time but the sound of music flipped over night when it came to the transition of music from 79-80. But with shout at the devil i have to agree. In terms of modern metal this album really does. to me, should take alot of credit. I mean, sure there was ratt-out of the cellar. Now im pretty sure shout at the devil came first and both groups had an album out prior tut o shout at the devil, but shout at the devil really delivered the modern metal sound to us. I mean around this time the metal scene exploded. So it would be hard to pinpoint which band created. It eveolved from feeding off of others in the same scene maybe. Hell who knows. I still have a spot in my heart for metal but lemme just say. Thank "whatever" for me discovering black flag- my war when i was 11 yrs old. Never looked back.

The Dee Snider comment was a "whoa" moment - wouldn't have thought...

Outstanding insight.

I loved hearing how the order of songs was determined! As kid listening to cassettes I figured out this common formula on my own but its nice to know it was done by intent...best 2 songs were always up front, #3 started off Side B, #4 finished off the album. The rest were sprinkled amongst the remaining spots. Haha!

Tom Werman, "Mutt" Lange, Rick Ruben, and Bob Rock are in my opinion, the best Rock music producers ever. Think of all the album's these four guys are responsible for and the impact they had in the genre. 🔥

Mtv didnt hurt nuthin. As soon as we seen the video we went n got the album and ofcourse my Buddy and I played guitar so we basically learned that whole album in a week and started our own band. It was great.

I want to really CONGRATULATE YOU for the idea of interview producers. As a sound student you are making the questions that I always had in my mind when I was listening to these legendary records. Sadly Motley Crue and others sell the mayhem, drugs, sex, etc .... In the books and films, but very little about songwriting and the making of records. I know that most of the people wants the "sex,drugs,r´r " thing, maybe there´s not too many people that really wants to know what instruments, amps, how they recorded ( specally in those days when records were made by craftmenship ... but now ... Well technology has good and bad ). Really good work, if you can ask them more about the guitar/amp rig the players use, the use of sound in the room, how they put the mics what type, etc ... And I guess I´m contradicting myself but Trent Reznor would be incredible. Yeah he is "hi tech" ... But man ... What sounds!! Keep the good work. Greetings from Spain.

An absolute glam/sleaze/LA classic Mick's riffing on Helter Skelter is supremely dirty. Lee's drumming is perfect. Everything is perfect.

My very first concert ever was Mötley Crüe on their Shout at the Devil tour. I saw them at the Warfield theater in San Francisco and paid $10 for the ticket. Haven’t seen them since.

Thanks for mentioning the Eagles. The 80s were missing that kind of music. Don't get me wrong, being 16 in1987, dropping out of school, going to concerts, meeting older girls: it was great; however, The Eagles, Boston, the Byrds, Zeppelin, etc., were the greatest rock bands ever.

That was excellent.

Love the interviewer’s voice...total radio worthy. Who are you? These interviews are priceless...I wish we had these Interviews when we were growing up with all these records and bands!!!

You’re very welcome! Truly, your voice is Westwood One quality. And, you have exceptional questions that push the limits. I was floored by the info on George Lynch in other interviews. I have worked for the largest backline company in nation for 12 years and have had the pleasure to work with many of my childhood hero’s setting up their gear they rented from us and guitar teching for them. George couldn’t have been a sweeter, nicer guy all the times I was with him. 30 years later and a family life tends to mellow out a guitar god I suppose. Hell, it was the roaring ‘80’s and in my opinion, the best time in music history in all genres. 80’s Hair Metal / Rock era will never die and it’s proven by your interviews because the royalty streams are still consistent!! I wish you all the success in the world and I hope you’re killing it on ad revenue. You deserve it.

I loved alot of songs frm the 80s but GGG was the theme to my adolescence. I love them all. They all have their own talents♥️

I agree with Tom on the Girls Girls Girls album. That was Mick really developing his sound on that record. Might be my favorite Motley record because it’s got that sharp City Boy Blues tone throughout the whole album.

My sister Kathy Fortine was director of the Jimmy Kimmel show. Before that "Rock Star Super Nova" and they were looking for ideas for the show, so I introduced them to Tommy because Ive known him since High School. It worked out cool and he ended up as one of the judges on the show !!! She died a few years ago.

I agree, Shout was great. But all it took for me to get turned off of Motley was to see the back cover of TOP and I was done without even listening to it. On to Metallica....

This album Iron Maiden Number of the Beast/Judas priest British steel Black Sabbath Mob Rules AC DC For Those About to Rock Twisted Sister Stay Hungry were some of the first albums that I ever got as a kid that weren't albums that were hand-me-downs from my brothers . This is music I found out about on my own my brothers didn't turn me on to it and I didn't care if they liked it or not I did..... so yeah those albums open my eyes to the wonderful world of metal. Then I got into thrash and death metal!

I have a vinyl promotional copy of Shout At The Devil. It somehow ended up at Boogie Records in Kalamazoo ,MI where I found it. I'll never get rid of it.

Bought this as a radio station only promo copy before it was released.. Turned a lot of kids onto crue then.

Yeah, after SHOUT however, and then ALL the hype for Theater before it hit with Nikki raving it all up, and then we the fans got?🤔 CRUE REALLY ALL glammed up with Vince wearing a lace girdle, Nikki in striped joker suits, lace and more lace for the other members 😒 and ALL the black associated with the CRUE? NOW, it's pink. 😒 And also, NOW they're more of a joke with the awful Smoking in the Boyz room video and cover song (for a hit!), the infamous Home Sweet Home ballad etc. But yeah, LOTTA stinkers on Theater as it WAS one of the biggest disappointments for MOST "true old school CRUE heads" like myself and many others....And just when ya thought the music couldn't get ANY worse or bland? Girls Girls Girls (stupid azz name and song ain't much better) got phoned in....Then, the Feel bad craze Lol. Ohh yeah, I was there. Went through it ALL too 😏 But TOO FAST and SHOUT are STILL the CRUE's ONLY top listenable albums with Theater being thrown in for a couple few okay tracks IMO. Rock ON 🤘🔥🤘

But yeah, it IS pretty amazing (at the least) to see how much of "a following" whether it's fanbase/general population/or media for such a band that in fact? Their ONLY, REAL claim to stardom/fame was/IS only their 1st TWO albums...TBH (leastways IMO)? The rest of the CRUE catalog is mostly JUST filler "gaaarrr-baaagggue", while there were/are plenty of other bands from that same era that actually have waaay better actual M.U.S.I.C. So yeah, NM HOW good a musician may be? It's obvious...LOTS has ta do with image and gimmick.....😏🙄. Rock the funk ON 😎🎸🥁🔥🤘

@@jamescon55 yep... image, gimmick, promotion and just having the songs shoved down everyone's throat on radio and MTV constantly. It's a proven fact that heavy rotation results in big sales.

Got to see them on their first North American tour for Shout At The Devil and included their first visit to Canada back in 84 I believe it was. Gatineau Quebec, Gertin Arena. General admission. It was awesome.

I remember sitting on the bus/yellow dog and having my cassette player listening to my new Shout At The Devil tape. Kids made fun of me and the Crue because of how they looked. I played it so much I wore the tape out. I ended up learning drums and could play every song Motley could give me. I even had patch pants made like Tommy on girls girls girls........my long blonde hair just didn't look right. LoL..... Great album......I miss the 80s....thanks for your contributions with the Crue...Tom. i loved it all....

Danger is the most underrated greatest ballads that Motley Crue ever made and they never played it live. I love that song. Is sums up the crew chronologically before they even started the dirt. They should have remix that song and added it into the dirt movie.

Agreed 1000% that entire album is their best, and heaviest work. The pre-chorus riff on danger is epic.. top 3 songs on the album 🤘🤘

I have so many questions about this record. Great interview though. I still have so many questions from the music to the look though.
