Producer Tom Werman talks about Mötley Crüe (2015 interview)

I recently sat down for a long form interview with famed music producer Tom Werman to discuss his career and the bands that he has worked with including Poison, Ted Nugent, L.A. Guns, Cheap Trick, Dokken, Stryper, Twisted Sister, Mötley Crüe and more. In this part one excerpt, Tom discusses working with Mötley Crüe and Nikki Sixx on their Shout At The Devil, Theatre Of Pain and Girls Girls Girls albums.
Quotes from the excerpt:
Mötley Crüe: "I'm the guy that the record labels turned to; to get these unrecordable bands on the radio. That's why Elektra wanted me to do Mötley Crüe."
"Vince and Nikki (in the beginning) were not that accomplished at their craft. Tommy and Mick - I thought were amazing."

Shout at the Devil has always been my favorite Crue album, because it was heavy and raw. I would’ve liked to hear what they would’ve come up with if this guy didn’t turn them “pop”.

I agree with the OP. With Theatre of Pain however, I don't really think it's an argument about being more pop or being over produced. The issue with TOP was that it sucked plain and simple. The material was complete garbage. A total dumpster fire in terms of the actual songs. I think this was the result of a few different things. Firstly the band was neck deep into excess and extracurricular activities and the focus was not there. Secondly since the label and Werman wanted a more pop friendly direction, Nikki had to adjust his style of songwriting and TOP was that adjustment period. At first Nikki had a very tough time trying to take his writing in a more commercial direction and he didn't quite know what to do. This was painfully evident in what would become Theatre of Pain. The fascinating thing about this period however is how in the world they(Motley Crue) were able to get away with it. This is where clever marketing, MTV and picking the right tracks to make videos for came in. The label knew that the only legitimate single they had was "Home Sweet Home" but they knew very well that they could not release it as the first single/video. It would immediately alienate the hard core fan base. Tom Werman and the label knew that there was nothing on the record worthy of being the first track released on what had become a hugely anticipated release. Sure there were some okay tracks like "Keep Your Eye on the Money", "Raise your Hand to Rock" and "Use it or Lose it" that could be played on AOR and Rock radio but those tracks were ultimately bland, heavily cliched and forgettable. "City Boy Blues" and "Save our Souls" were among with "Home Sweet Home" the best tracks on the album but neither had the right type of vibe to be the lead single on the new Motley Crue album. The solution was having the band record a cover of "Smoking in the Boys Room" by Brownsville Station. With Smoking as the rockin type lead single and video being a bonafied success, the label now felt that the band had the necessary goodwill and momentum to release the ballad "Home Sweet Home" as the second single/video. Home Sweet Home proved to be a smash and helped the Theatre of Pain record go double platinum. Say what you will about Nikki Sixx but the man is no fool and a quick study to be sure. Now having a much better understanding on how to adjust his style of punkish and raw hard rock into a commercially viable behemoth, Sixx and co would start the writing process on what would be their biggest record yet. "Girls Girls Girls" would go triple platinum and beyond with Crue classics like the title track, "Wildside" and "All in the Name of" This would of course be followed by their best selling album of all time "Dr Feelgood" which would go 5× platinum and beyond on the strength of the title track, "Kick start my Heart" and "Without You", catapulting the band into superstardom.

yeh man. When Nikki started bashing theatre of pain back in the corabi days, everyone else started to bash it as well. It like he gave people a pass to say this album sucked bc it wasn't shout at the devil part 2. People wanna talk about what they wore instead of what they're songs were about and how they stand up today. To me, it's much better than girls and nowhere near as poppy as feelgood. In ways, its the last classic album for the crue b4 they took off their make-up.

Agree. I was into the image of course (I was 11 & 13 when Shout & Theatre came out, respectively), but the music was amazing. I didn't like Girls much at all, was very disappointed. They stripped away all the theatrics from their look/image and the songs were just bland IMO. The organ on "Tonight" & "Fight For Your Rights", the acoustic guitar on "Raise Your Hands To Rock", Mick's slide guitar on "City Boy Blues" & "Save Our Souls", hell the piano on "Home Sweet Home". Just great songs with unique twists than made them special. In fact I'd say start-to-finish Pain is probably my favorite album, with Shout a close second.

People look at their pic's and hear home sweet home and think that's all there is to this album. They're just sheep that follow the cool thing to piss on. I will always say this is the crue before they went into the more poppy side of rock. I didn't expect this comment to render this many responses. I'm 51, and honestly, not a huge fan of 80's hair metal. That said, Van Halen, The Crue, Ratt, etc, to my ears were or are rock n roll. LA Guns is the only band that had obvious Crue influence, I loke,.their 1st record is awesome. Rambling on there, sorry. Mick Mars, is exactly what the Crue needed. Nikki has all of those songs on Shout, and Too Fast listing him as lyrics and music. Lyrically, Nikki, was always miles above the pack. However, a single note bass line, with lyrics, doesn't constitute a riff. If you're a musician, you know exactly what I mean. Too Fast, has lots of riffs, that are based on single string, or chromatic bass lines, sounding like a guy writing as he's learning. By Shout, Michael was taking Nikki's vocal melodies, and creating melodic, but still crushing riffs. Too Young, Looks that Kill. My personal favorite if all Motley songs is 10 Seconds, which sounds like Nikki pretty much had the framework in place. Simplistic, but 8ncredibly effective, and such a great hook. Any other cheesedick player, would've have fucked Motley Crue up. Imagine George Lynche playing in the Crue. Every song muted 16ths, on the A string, and some esoteric noodling, that honestly ,to this day, seems, irrelevant to me. EVH like Mick, played riffs, and his technique as a lead player was icing. Tracking Guns, plays like he should've been in the Crye. His style is very strut like, look at me, I'm a bad mother fucker playing, done sloppy enough to sound street, done efficiently enough, you know he's no joke. And to that end, Mick's lead.style is all Mick. I clearly.remember the dudes that qore spandex, dissing him, saying shit like, he plays minor scale bullshit. And me saying, well yeah he does love minor pentatonic scales, but his playing clearly says, think you're better? Step up and let me relocate your head from your shoulders, and place it 8n your hands. But, in the 80's and me included until I was 16 or so. We all thought unless you could play Eruption you sucked. So I learned, Shout, and Too Fast both sides, tuned a full step down, argued with the spandex wearing dudes. And then Slash happened, I was 16, and I sold every piece of shit I owned with a Floyd, and bought 2 Les Paul Studios. And played what I've, 70's style lead guitar, and like Mick does, I started playing for the song. I don't think Keef is a major influences on Mick, Keef plays shuffles, but I'd put $100.00 on Mick Mars liking Mick Taylor, and Ronnie Wood as lead players. As for Jeff Beck, Motley, 8sn't that type.of band. There's some song by Mick, called like Suite 19, or 52, or something, really 50's influenced, like Scott Moore from Elvis's band. It's music, not cock measuring. And with that I submit, all of tye aforementioned bands are all clearly cock rock, they strut, and wreak of young male arrogance, as they should. But the Poisons, Warrants, abd Bon Jovi of that time all suck IMO. Bon Jovi, was never about art, and being something different than everyday people, they were as they are now, a hit factory, with a front man, that has aged gracefully, but always followed trends of the day. Great career move, because, he seems to be able to, easily. Remember Corabie, that record is fucking amazing. But the public didn't want the Crue then. They wanted Toe Jam. Imagine if Andy Wood hadn't died, just how different, the early 90's would've sounded. I love those Seattle bands, exceot Toe Jam. They suck. Butt itch Rock. Like when you have a little doo doo, stuck on your booty. They're that low.

What a great interview! Tom Werman's insight into Motley Crue is probably the best that I've ever heard from someone who worked closely with the band. I like what he said particularly about Mick Mars being an underappreciated guitarist. I've always felt the same way about him. And Motley Crue should be much more appreciative of what Weman did for them. Nikki Sixx's comments were not very nice.

Most bands have spent their formative years starving to death and honing their songs that end up on their first album. When you're a millionaire, trying to write tunes while you're out on tour, it just isn't the same. The angst and hunger are gone right about the time you make your first mill.

Of course. The first few albums is when a band is hungry and they've had plenty of time to develop the songs. As your career goes on you lose the hunger, they start to develop interests outside of music, they start families. Rock and metal should be primal, visceral. The older/and more successful they are it's usually going to yield lesser results

SATD was a great Crue album, even if it was the only Crue album where Mick didn't play any slide guitar. It had an overall heavy and moody vibe that worked well for the band. Also, for Tom Werman to take credit for these bands at the pinnacle of their success, well, that's only partly true. Sure, he produced poppy and slick sounds that worked great for FM radio, but the times were changing too, and 80's metal was giving way to the Seattle grunge sound. By the early/mid 90's, it didn't matter who was producing these bands, because radio and MTV wouldn't touch them anymore.

Well to be fair, they can't stand next to most of the artists in there, because most of those artists are actual musicians. With Nikki having around 40 years of "experience" playing the bass, he is just as bad now as he was when he thought you could play bass with a six string guitar. He still misses more notes than he hits live, still writes all his songs around open E and A string bass lines, and most amazingly, he still can't play a fucking string on the upstroke. And then we come to Vince. Who was a barely capable vocalist even at the height of their career, when they were all clear and clean and sober in 1988/89. But at least at that time he was a great frontman live. For the last 20+ years (more than half the time they have been together actually) he has just been a big blubbery joke of a drunk, who couldn't learn his lesson from killing someone drink driving and maiming 2 others, and has been done for drink drive a lot of times since then. He staggers around the stage and can barely get through a song without going for a drink of booze. And then there's his actual performance. Which is just horrific at this point. The only one who is truly great at his job in that band, and has been consistently great since day 1, is Tommy Lee. And he's just a joke in other ways, his personal life and who he is (like wanting to be a rapper and so on). Mick is just too fucked up ill now to play properly, and so they rely on more backing tracks than Taylor Swift to support him. And they have to turn Nikki's bass all the way down so he doesn't completely embarrass the band every time they play. Other bands in the hall of fame are actual musicians. Motley aren't. Don't get me wrong, I fucking love classic crue. Love Corabi album crue. Love all the great albums through the 80's, and they were all just great in their own way back then. But none of them were great musicians. Tommy is really good, and was great back then. But he was never Keith Moon level great.

They blamed him for it failing! So was Bob great, or was he shit? Same with Metallica. He did the Black album, "Load" and "Reload", which were all very good, but "St. Anger" sucked shit. Again, that's my opinion. I think that if the Motley album with Corabi had been called something else besides "Motley Crue", maybe it would have done better.

So Theatre just for the pink colour was a total shock, they tried to become glam to attract the females at their concert. Look at how long it took kiss to get in and besides the people running the hall of fame have no taste anyway, no knowledge of most of these bands and what they had done for that particular genre of music..
