Episode 551. Fascinating interview this week with legendary producer Tom Werman. Tom starts by taking us back to working with Wicked Lester and then the performance when KISS auditioned for Epic Records and what his bosses response was. We then move on to many of the bands he produced, hearing some amazing stories!
As an A&R man at Epic Records, Werman helped introduce the world to REO Speedwagon, Boston, Ted Nugent, and Cheap Trick; he also discovered KISS, Rush, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, but his record label passed on all of them. Then, as an independent producer, he oversaw landmark albums by Mötley Crüe (Shout At The Devil), Twisted Sister (Stay Hungry), Lita Ford (Dangerous Curves), Jeff Beck (Live With Jan Hammer), Poison (Open Up And Say … Ahh!), and many more. All in all, his record-making résumé includes twenty-three gold- or platinum-selling albums and cumulative sales of more than fifty-two million copies.

My book purchase is confirmed! Tom Werman, a name we 'always knew'...and could be certain we would enjoy an album he produced. Excellent to hear him tell his stories. Great interview by an engaged Three Sides crew!

Great interview, thanks! I know Tom has copped some flack from Nikki Sixx over the years, but it's worth mentioning that a 1985 interview with Mick Mars (Theatre of Pain era) has surfaced on KZread where Mick says that Tom was "great" and a "brilliant man". He describes how Tom and engineer Duane Baron worked hard on getting unique guitar tones for the Theatre album. It can be found under 'Mick Mars : the lost interview with Steve Rosen' and the quote about Tom is around the 25 minute mark (just in case anyone else is as nerdy enough to care as I am!)...

Jimmy Farrar who replaced Danny Joe Brown did a great job on "Beatin The Odds." I recall being dragged to see Molly Hatchet when they played in Oklahoma in 1981. I was so thrilled to see Molly Hatchet and was glad I got dragged to the show. It was wonderful. Sadly, Jimmy has even passed along with every single original band member of Molly Hatchet. I recall Bruce Crump, drummer, for Hatchet had lbeen touted through the 1980's as the premier rock drummer in the various drum magazines.

He really worked on some incredible records. Awesome show as usual. My faves are Cocked and Loaded and Shout At The Devil. Shout is pretty much the perfect record. But please dont forget the unbeatable Stryper record Against The Law. Nothing can beat that record.

I recall Ted and Derek's version of why Derek only sang on Dog eat Dog and light my way on Free for All. Ted and Derek said it was for insubordination for fighting with Ted, Tom and Lew over their Tinny production/sound on the album. They pretty much told Derek to shut up, sit-down and soldier on and Derek told them to blank off and they asked him to leave. Then when the record executives listen to the finished product they asked, what happened to the singer on the first album? They said, He is gone. They said, you need to get him back. That is why Dog eat Dog was redone with Derek singing and Light my way was added after the fact. Meat actually sang Dog Eat Dog and Derek sang street rats before he was shown the door.

Looking forward to reading his book. I’ve read Phil Ramone, Walter Yetnikoff, Tommy Mottola and Clive Davis’ books who all ran Columbia Records but this is the first “from the trenches” book where he had to deal with difficult bands and the label heads at Columbia/Epic/Sony.

You guys do an awesome job interviewing and respecting your guests. Werman has unnecessarily taken shit from some of the jerks in the business after producing multi-platinum albums for them. Werman is on Mt. Rushmore of producers with Ezrin, Eddie Kramer, Mutt Lange, Wagner, Templeman, and Beau Hill.

My favorite Tom Werman produced album would be Ted Nugent's Free For All. I knew Meatloaf sang on that album and for years I would tell people that fact and nobody else ever knew it. I can't remember the name now but there was a website that used to run Tom Werman recollections of working with all the bands he produced. Good stuff.

Double Live Gonzo! A close 2nd, Free for All. I wished you guys asked Tom if Ted's Double Live Gonzo was like Kiss Alive. Heavily redone/reworked in the studio to sound like a live album. Ted's ripping solos throughout those 4 sides of DLG are his best ever recorded. The reason I am suspicious DLG was done in the studio is because over the years I have heard a many interviews of fans praising Ted about Double Live Gonzo and asking Ted questions about it. And for once, he is quiet and quickly goes off in another direction or just says, thank you and leaves it there. Usually when you give Ted an opening he passionately goes into great detail. So, is Ted's Double Live Gonzo, his version of Kiss Alive?

Haven't made it all the way thru this episode yet, but my FIRST question for Tom would have been, "Did you realize when you were producing Shout At The Devil (the song) that you already had recorded that riff with Ted Nugent on Free For All's Turn It Up"? (1:16 mark on youtube). Motley also "borrowed" the riff for Looks That Kill from Journey's Departure albums song, Where Were You (not that Tom produced that).

Why does that matter? Does it change the music he produced? No. You need to be more accepting that the world is filled with people who think differently than you. If that is a problem for you than please leave.
