It is not abandoned. It is owned by a church based in Korea which does little to preserve it. They attempted to get tax exemption by declaring it a church but were unable to.

JP Widener was the owner of this beautiful mansion and was an investor of the white star line, the company that created the RMS Titanic. Like the Titanic this mansion has two twin sisters but does anyone else notice this is a cross.

Aggresively marketed & developed, restoration is a good possibility. It would take a combination of private, corporate & public monies. Who says it has to be accomplished all at one time. Proceed the restoration in stages. As development increases, monies will follow.

+Bryson A. Thomas The original family lost their fortune through various circumstances. It was stripped of its worth and misused by its successive pseudo-religious owners.

Apparently these Korean “church Sisters” don’t take a vow of poverty! Hopefully someone like Dr. Johnson, formerly of Hillsborough, CA will take on a restoration project of this mansion like she did with Chateau Carolands in CA and endow a foundation for its continued preservation....Bless the Johnson family!

It was designed by Horace Trumbuer and completed in 1898. The gardens were designed by Jacque Grabier. Interior design: White & Allom of London. Lord Joseph Duveen, and Herter Bros. John Wanamaker provided the finest reproductions of the time to actually use and sit upon furniture. All of the Art Collection was bequeathed to Washington National Gallery. We can all go there and see it all as was seen by the Widener’s. Sadly, Philadelphia isn’t the same place as it once was. Lots of unfortunate’s and horrid crime is there. This same description can also apply to Whitemarsh Hall. The US post office constructed an hideous modern Post Office right out front across the street. You can see it in the drone vid. The bronze fountain statuary were sculpted by George Leon Grabier…..sold off illegally by the phony Pastor. He also sold of the bronze dorè sconce (14 total) to raise money to continue his tax scam, and pay the mortgage. The Bank found out what he was doing and that’s when all the crap hit the fan. All the fireplaces are culled out and sold, all the Crystal chandeliers have long long go away. It was supposed to be our satellite of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. So was Whitemarsh Hall. The titanic accident killed that plan. And the depression killed the Whitemarsh Hall plan. As much as Fisk Kimble was very involved, he realized very very little for the PMA in the end. All bad timing and the gossipy hatred of the old Philadelphia families of the time. They are real culprits of Philadelphia’s demise to todays problems. …..call all be traced back to those old moneyed families who contributed nothing.

You can't yell at the owners. It was probably donated to them. You're lucky they maintained it at all. Not even the richest of the rich are willing to put 70M into a private residence. That would be near the highest price ever for a private residence, and it's no longer surrounded by neighbors in the same price range. But more importantly, it would establish the value for taxes at 70M once the sale and renovation closed. Nobody's going to pay property tax on 70M when they can transfer similar property privately. So without some kind of government agreement on tax free status, no private buyer in their right mind would pay to restore it. But that would not be bad if they did come to a tax agreement. Also, The house and grounds could be turned into a museum (raises money), and donated to the county / city, and voters should vote on restoring it. The rest of the land could be subdivided by developers for high end residential. Some tax money from the development project could be earmarked to contribute to restoration.... Kind of like Viscaya in Miami or Biltmore (I think that's same thing but private, though). www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/920-Spring-Ave_Elkins-Park_PA_19027_M38238-20341
