LYING vs SEATED Leg Curl: Which is BETTER?
Спорт
What is the difference between a lying leg curl vs a seated one? So if you remember from my video yesterday, the hamstrings are a biarticular muscle meaning they cross 2 different joints, the hip and the knee, and this allows them to perform both hip extension, and knee flexion. During a leg curl you’re only training knee flexion since all you’re doing is bending your knee, however if you look closely, your hips are in a different position seated then they are lying down. When you’re seated your hips are bent, or flexed, and when you’re lying down, your hips are straight or extended. We know that the hamstrings perform hip extension, which means that the muscle fibers shorten as you extend your hips. Thus, when you’re lying down, you’re primarily targeting the shortened position of your hamstrings, since your hips are straight or extended. This also means that when you flex your hips, you lengthen your hamstrings, so a seated leg curl where your hips are bent would primarily target the lengthened position. So, as a result, I recommend including both variations on different days you train legs, to take advantage of all positions of the muscle.

In short, the lying leg curl trains more of the shortened position of your hamstrings, whereas the seated leg curl trains more of the lengthened position. Both are fantastic options for overall development, so I recommend including both! Looking to get protein powder, creatine, or any other supplements? That hip hinge is phenomenal
The actual difference is that seating brings a greater stretch for the parts that do knee flexion and hip extension. --> seated is better for hypertrophy Standing or lying is better for only one part or the knee flexors, the Sartorius to be exact. That's because the Sartorius performs a hip flexion, not a hip extension in addition to a knee flexion. Therefore it is more lengthened while lying down. --> lying or standing is better for the Sartorius

My Gym only has seated, which for me I always get a TON of activation so ive never thought im missing out on anything. But because of your videos ive realized im not hitting all the muscles I could be so ive incorporated more RDL/hip hinge movements and my legs have blown up. Thanks for the info dude! Keep it coming.

@@batman-sr2px Ya for the most part, seated still feels like its hitting most of my hamstring but ive incorporated RDLs into my leg days and I do really feel those in my upper ham and glutes... Mostly I just dont want any muscle group to be imbalanced and I didnt used to train glutes enough so im glad its hitting that too I guess lol

I've been looking for an explanation of this for so long THANKS! Also, do you have something explaining the different muscles used for Leg press, lying leg press, and squats? Which portions of muscles each exercise works?
@nickdreezy2457
Жыл бұрын
Mmm your legs work as a single unit so there’s really no point is prioritizing specific movements in order to get a crazy, for example, vastus lateralis. Leg Press is just going to isolate your entire quad w/ a little hamstring/glute work and a squat is more of a full body movement prioritizing quads/glutes (hip ext) w/ a little hamstring work. I’m sure there’s ways to get a little more vastus lateralis on for example a leg extension by changing toe position, but in the grand scheme of things it’s really not worth thinking about
I prefer seated because exercising the lengthened positions is often neglected. As Upright Health says, you need to develop strength at every length.

Hey Max, love your videos and appreciate your hard work! I know this is a stupid question, but I just wanna be safe... earlier this year(the 17th of February) I had surgery to remove a hemorrhoid I had gotten because my form was totally wrong while deadlifting heavy. I have started slowly getting back into the gym now, my question is, do you think, if my form is correct, it would be safe to do the variation where you extend your hips? Atm I'm only doing seated hamstring curls...
TL;DR They train different movements of the muscle. Just do both

The seated leg curl has a better resistance profile than the lying leg curl, as you can easily trick your lower back to lift more weight.

I’ve noticed my seated leg curl is much stronger than my lying leg curl by a lot
So lying curl machine works the same hamstring muscle as in deadlift?

Is it realistic to have a six pack while relaxed and not be show ready. I can see my abs when I flex, but relaxed I just see some definition, but not nearly like a six pack. Just visible indents

Definitely. Having defined abs when relaxed is often not sustainable for most people to keep the bf that low at all times. The fact that you have them showing at all is very good. Unless you have a reason to constantly be photo ready, don’t worry about it too much.

Title says which is better...so which is better!?!??! Says both are good 😅

Maybe a stupid question but.. should i train every exercise to failure? Or just the last exercise?
Wouldn't the seated one be better because, since the hamstrings cross the hip joint, being seated means that the hamstrings will be stretched the entire time and your muscles are strongest when they're stretched
Hey so I got this problem when doing rdls. My hands start hurting cause of my grip but idk how to fix it. I put on a lot of weight cause I could do 10 or 8 rdls if my hands didn't hurt. If I put it to a lighter weight, I'd be doing rdls for 2 hours. Hope you can help

Is it a good idea to just only exercise 2x per week and each time, I do biceps and legs? I’m a very casual exercise or so I could do to bicep exercises each time, and then do one leg exercise each time, but change the leg exercise every time. Could this be an effective plan? I usually like to walk for cardio as well. Should I try to avoid doing an hour walk on days that I work out my legs? Or is it not really that serious?
my gym only has seated
lying leg curls hurt so i do seated
I dont like doing lying down ones cuz even if I have a perfect fit in the machine and I've stretched. I can go with light weight and still feel a tingling popping sensations in the back of my right knee and I dont like when I feel it. It doesn't hurt it just feels weird
The seated one is more honest
I prefer just sticking with seated hamstring curls. I feel crazy soreness just above behind my knee anyway, and my hamstrings are pretty big, so I don't see the reason to HAVE to incorporate both.
I disagree. First of all, you are correct that the hamstring muscles perform hip extension, which means that the muscle fibers lengthen as the hips flex. Therefore, in a seated leg curl, as the individual sits with their knees bent and flexes their knees towards their buttocks, their hip joint is also flexed, which means that the hamstring muscles are lengthened. So, in that sense, you could say that the seated leg curl bias the lengthened position of the hamstring muscles. However, it's worth noting that the exercise does not provide a full stretch to the hamstring muscles, as the machine limits the range of motion. Additionally, the exercise does not challenge the hamstrings through their full range of motion, which means that other exercises, such as the Nordic curl or stiff-legged deadlifts, may be more effective at targeting the lengthened position of the hamstrings. While the seated leg curl does involve some lengthening of the hamstring muscles, it may bias the shortened position of the hamstrings more. This is because the machine limits the range of motion, which means that the hamstrings do not experience a full stretch. The resistance curve of the machine may also play a role in how the exercise targets the hamstrings. Machines often have a resistance curve that is set to provide greater resistance in the shortened position of the muscle. This means that the resistance will be greatest when the hamstrings are contracted, which biases the shortened position of the muscle.
Isnt the seated one for quads?
What about RDL’s
My gym doesn’t have a lying leg curl sadly
My gym doesn't have the seated variation

Isn't the rdl more upper hamstring and the lying leg curl more lower hamstring?
My gym only has seated leg curls what do i do in that case to target the entire hamstring?
@omarhurani

You target the entire muscle group in both variations, just that each exercise targets them in a different position. If your gym has a cable machine with a leg attachment, look up "Cable Hamstring Curl" and set it up. To mimic the hamstring position, make sure your legs and upper body are mostly in line with each other (not hinged/seated)
