“Lyd”: Directors of New Sci-Fi Doc on How 1948 Nakba Devastated Palestinian City

Support our work: www.democracynow.org/donate?c...
A new film about the once-thriving Palestinian city of Lyd, now known as the Israeli city Lod and home to Ben Gurion Airport, has begun screening in the United States. The film is a “science fiction documentary” that depicts the Palestinian city both with and without the 1948 Nakba, when over 750,000 Palestinians were driven from their homes and villages. In Lyd, Israeli soldiers massacred hundreds of Palestinians in Dahmash Mosque during their takeover of the city. “We use the story of Lyd to symbolize the story of the Nakba, the Palestinian Nakba, the demolition and expulsion of over 600 villages all across Palestine,” explains Rami Younis, a descendant of Nakba survivors from Lyd. Younis and Sarah Ema Friedland, the co-directors of Lyd, join Democracy Now! to share excerpts from their film and discuss the vision behind their project.
Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs on over 1,500 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday. Watch our livestream at democracynow.org Mondays to Fridays 8-9 a.m. ET.

Our family comes from Lyd. The events of July 1948-when my father and his family were violently expelled from their home and forced to march to Barfiliya, never to return- have reverberated throughout my entire life. I live in Europe and my Israeli neighbor grew up in Barfiliya (present day Modi’in), though he had never heard of it. Last summer my cousins and I interviewed our oldest living relatives about some of the details of 1948 that had been just too painful for our parents to discuss while they were alive. We imagined that if the world understood how brutal the foundation of the ethno-nationalist state was, they would think twice about upholding its supremacist and separatist policies. Then October 7 occurred.

And 850,000 Jews were robbed and forced out of Egypt, Iraq, Libya, Pakistan, Sudan, Yemen, Syria etc after living in some of these countries for 2,500 years. The Jews remembered their land for 2,000 years since the Roman expulsion in 70 AD and the Babylonian expulsion in 586 BC so it's OK for "both people's" to remember our land.

That's bs told to you by your elders, the actual history is hidden in the Israeli archives. As Ben Morris points out, the Nakba started even before the Arab countries started to fight. Villages like Deir Yassin (which had an agreement not to have any military outposts and kept to that agreement) was depopulated by the Haganah, the Lehi, and the Irgun (the terrorist groups that went on to makeup the IDF) before any Arab country step foot into Palestine. Nearly half of the refugees in 1948 were already forced to flee before any Arab country intervened. That means around 350k people were already refugees before the "first Arab-Israeli war" erupted.

No. We know that many people---especially in cities---were driven from their homes by armed Zionist militia members. They were given ten minutes to pack, marched to ports, and sent to Gaza via boats. The Zionists emptied entire neighborhoods in Jaffa this way. Israeli historians have published a great deal about this officially suppressed history.

Palestinians are recent construct in the last hundred years. They are basically Arabs coming from the surrounding countries. Yasser Arafat coined the term Palestinian as a political tool. There was never a Palestinian country for the Palestinians. They don’t have any history of any government, leaders, recognition as a Palestinian state, currency, or any history of a country. The term Palestine was because it was the British mandate of Palestine, but it was not because of the made up term of Palestinian, which they adopted for the Arabs of the surrounding areas who came to the land in recent past century..you can also look up Mosab a Palestinian who was a member of Hamas, his father is the cofounder of Hamas and he speaks of this made construct of “Palestinian Palestine.” It simply never existed. The country that would be considered Palesitian in Jordan, created by British Mandate for the Arabs, they gave more land to the Arabs 77% than Jew 23%. Jordan is majority Palestinian in the millions with a Palestinian queen, by all accounts Jordan is a Palestinians country.

There doesn't have to be a state, a region, or anything as a basis for a group of people defining themselves as the [The People of] 'XY'. 'The people of XY' are the people of 'XY' because they are a *_large_* community of people, connected through a common culture and history [and language]. Conclusio: 'The Palestinians' do not need a state or region or buildings or kings or coins or whatever representations to be 'The Palestine People/The Palestinians'. They simply are, by commonly agreeing on choosing to be such and by the qualities named above. That's the definition of 'A People'. The 'Sinti- and Roma-People' here in Germany for example, the 'Zigeuner'/the 'Gypsies', they do not have a state, they do not have coins or cultural buildings, but they are a (more or less) large group of people, connected by a common culture, historie, suffering, traditions, [language] and define themselves as 'The Sinti and/or Roma People'. That's all it needs. And for this, also 'The Palestinians' are ... real ... and a State of their own would simply be the topping on it, not a necessity though.
