Lycoming 180 hp exhaust valve guide check
Lycoming Aircraft Engine 180 hp exhaust valve guide check. Service Bulletin No. 388B
Please note the the cap that goes on the end of the exhaust valve appears to be warn in the video, in reality you can barely feel the wear with your fingers, the other 3 cylinders were similar .

very interesting and pretty easy, thanks for sharing.
Would it make more sense to check the EGT sensor before disassembling the valve spring?

The valve guide inspection was due and the owner wanted it done since it was in the shop. The problem has not reoccurred even after swapping the EGT probes. Go figure.
Next time try pushing about 6 feet of cloths line in the spark plug hole and turn the prop until it holds the valve in place. Works even if the valve is bad
Could you post a photo of the two adapter tools you made? I couldn’t see the angle valve one. It was off camera.

I am going to do a video of me using the angle valve tools soon. I'll make sure they are more visible
Looks like an O-360 mounted in the front of a Mooney M20C…? Dog house, cooling air line, and battery case… Where a stuck exhaust valve can cause quite a vibration, while missing 25% of its power output…. Kerry McIntyre? (Mooney Mechanic Extraordinaire, KNR) 😃 - a -
Excellent explanation. I was a flight engineer for 30 years, built several car engines and jet engine mechanic. Your video was a huge help in my learning of GA engines. We have a Mooney w Lycoming 180 hp and "something" in the engine is causing a skip at low RPM. 1-2-3-4 skip, 1-2-3-4 skip. Bad plug, leads, mags (think not), intake leak, exhaust valve, (I hope not) carburetor?
Wouldn't the leakdown test have said the valves were seated?

we are checking to make sure the valves have clearance in the guide to prevent seizing. it is very common in lycoming engines. its recommended to check every 400 hours
Start with the simple answers first .. time = money !
I guess you don’t use the dial indicator….
What kinda airplane? ---- Mooney?
