Lycoming O-320 Teardown | Part 1

This will be the first of at least 3 parts. Right now, watch the removal of the Lycoming O-320-B2A accessory case, which includes the removal of the oil sump first.
In the next couple videos I'll share the condition of the camshaft and the crank. Also, I share a RARE tool that I'll use to spilt the engine case.
Stay tuned or check my channel page to see if parts 2 & 3 are up yet!
If you have any suggestions or comments, please mare sure to leave them!
Thank you!
Be safe and be blessed!
FYI: My STOL hat is from a friend of mine, his website is www.kruxwear.com
Be sure to check out his several designs!

Awesome. What kinda of case splitting method did you use? I have a rare one, I’ll share soon.

@@Blaircraft.Engines I had a partner, and we laid it sideways on a table and we pulled each and split it open with no tools needed. Great videos!

Cool to watch the teardown of an O-320 after years of flying behind them, not a bad way to start my Monday... Good tips too. 👍 Were the pistons removed for long term storage?

Glad you enjoyed it. Actually the pistons and other small parts were just boxed up and put into a plastic tote. Everything has remained very oily. The crank is my biggest concern as it's really to most value. I share the case splitting and views of the crank fairly soon!

I presume that you have the Lycoming overhaul manual for that engine. It is very detailed and covers everything.

Where does the fuel primer line connect to the intake manifold on this engine?

  • @Blaircraft.Engines

    @Blaircraft.Engines

@Rowdy Flyer1903 the primer lines shoot directly into the cylinder head just to the side of the intake port. For some reason it had only 3 of 4 cylinders with primer lines. The main primer line T's out from the back of the engine. This answer your question? I apologize for the LATE reply, I lost access to my account for approx.. 4 weeks!

I have a D2A mounted on a tandem two place Gyroplane via a dynafocal mount and the engine has no fuel system installed at the moment. ( yeah a long ways to go) none of the primer lines are installed and all ports are plugged. Would a single primer line or two cylinders which follow each other in sequence be enough to initiate the ignition? Does each line require a vibration loop?

same for 0-320-d3g? how can one legally teardown and overhaul one. any workshop with certificate in USA?

Any certified mechanic with a powerplant rating can legally do a field overhaul. You don’t need a certificate to tear one down, however you should be familiar with the engine designed to prevent any damage.

Thanks for asking! I’m really looking forward to sharing the complete build process. My engine case just was picked up today going out for cleaning and dimensional inspection. (DivCo) I’ll be building this engine in a few months. Until then, I’ll be preparing the other small parts. Stayed tuned and thanks again for asking!
