Luthiers Router Sled/Camera Dolly + Free Plans!

Sometimes you want to thickness a headstock, but can't send it through the thickness planer, so what do you do? Make a Luthier's Routing Sled! I made mine out of steel, but look below for free plans to use good old wood, or follow along with me and make your own metal monstrosity! This setup also work for bodies, too. I also needed a camera dolly, so why not use this for both?
This video series takes us from an empty workshop, to a fully operational small shop luthiery operation over the course of 3 months. I'll show you the jigs and templates I use, how to make your own, with downloadable CNC files, cut lists, and blueprints for each project.

Awesome video! Thank you! I have a question though, why did you make it this long? I tried looking at buying these rails and it would cost me $40 to buy a pair of 500mm rails and bearings but going for a 1000m length would raise my costs to more than $200, so I am really cosidering why (I would use this for leveling bodies, headstocks etc.). P.s. Thank you for your great videos ! Really like that they are so explanatory!

I made a monster one so I could lay out several necks or bodies at once an gang cut them, also so I could work on set neck instruments on it, and finally to not be limited when it comes to non-guitar projects I've been working on. I had the space, so I just went for it! If you are happy with a smaller one, you should totally do it. It would make it a lot easier to stow away when not in use also.

Please be safe and reinstall the guard on your grinder, those discs do break and send pieces flying toward everywhere including your body. Love watching your videos that’s why.

I've been using those grinders like that for 11 years now, I don't think there's any way I still have the guards for them.

Hey accelerater for super glue? Water and bicarbonate of soda! I'm not sure of the ratio but that works!

@@TempleGuitars I've been trying to find info on it but I used to make RC airplanes in the late seventies and 80's and people were using that! It's an acid neturalizer and a mild acid is in super glue to slow cure times! But it's cheap household product and csn't hurt to experiment. Guys would take an empty spray bottle and throw water and and an alka seltzer in and call it accelerater! Save money live better!

@@TempleGuitars try 4 grams of bicarbonate of soda with each 50 milileters of water. I think distilled water would be best.

Not to be that guy, but you should watch a few angle grinder safety videos. There was awhile where I used my angle grinder without a safety guard for whatever reason, then after I watched some of the safety videos I was like, "okay, I should probably put that back on."

No, I hear you. A few people have pulled me up on that, and I appreciate it. I used to make chopper bikes with them, and the guards got in the way. But I had a grinder disc explode once not too long ago, and while my hands were spared, my face shield was toast.

@@TempleGuitars Yeah, scary stuff. Good thing you had a mask on! I worked with a guy who had one explode and it almost cut his hand in half.
