Lundi Versus Some Very Stubborn Rhinos | Flashback to Elephant Escapades at the Waterhole

This Flashback Friday, join Jabulani Guide Nathan and HERD Elephant Carer Forbes on a virtual safari! In this video, taken during the dry winter last year, we take a look at what happened after Lundi and Mambo chased a group of rhinos away from the waterhole. You can watch the chase here: • Elephants Mambo and Lu... .
Shortly after the chase, Mambo lost interest and moved on to other activities. But Lundi was determined to get the rhinos to move further away. She followed them, and when they stopped a short distance from the waterhole, she stood and watched them. Eventually, Jabulani walked over to Lundi to back her up. Together, the two tried to intimidate the rhinos in an effort to get them to leave. The one rhino, however, called their bluff and stood her ground. Her plan worked - Jabulani soon moved on, and eventually, Lundi started backing away as well.
As the drama unfolds in the back, you can see the other elephants continuing with their own activities. Little Khanyisa and Timisa walk over to sand themselves, followed closely by allomothers Kumbura and Klaserie. Setombe, Mambo, Somopane, Pisa, and Zindoga all walk by on their way to find sand to throw over their wet bodies. And look out for the group of giraffes walking in the background!

😊😉🥰😍😘😇😇🤗💞💕💘💖🩷💜🧡👋👋👋👌👌👍👍👍

    I’m curious, does anyone know what the difference is between the role of the matriarch and the role the dominant female? At first I thought they were the same, but after watching the video it sounds like they’re different.

  • @carmenl163

    @carmenl163

    The way I understand it, is that Tokwe the matriarch is the leader and then there is an hierarchy between the other adult females. So, Setombe is the most dominant of the other females. But, even though she is the most dominant of the others, she will still follow Tokwe as being the matriarch. Tokwe isn't the oldest female, which is actually a bit special. Setombe is the oldest and therefore destined to be the matriarch, but she was too nervous to be a good leader, so Tokwe stepped in. On the HERD webpage are bios of many members and all this is explained there. You may want to read it.
