Limpopo - The First Calf born to the Jabulani Herd

Named after a river in Zimbabwe and a province in South Africa, Limpopo is the daughter of Matriarch, Tokwe and came into the world on 19 August 2006.
She was the first calf born to the Jabulani herd and while we know who her mother is, we can only guess who the father may be - possibly Sebakwe or a wild elephant. Her birth was an emotional time for us all, as elephants are known to not reproduce if they are under stress or in an unhappy environment. Her birth showed that Tokwe was happy and at home in her new surroundings with us at Jabulani, after being rescued from being culled in Zimbabwe.
Physical Traits:
You can certainly see Limpopo’s resemblance to her mother, with her slightly less wrinkled skin, slightly pointed forehead, and thin, neat and even tusks. Being an active elephant, much like her mother, Limpopo also has a more athletic body shape.
Personality:
Limpopo is the eldest of the younger elephants and is very much the big sister of the herd, always protective and tending to the younger elephants - a trait she may well have learned from her caring mother.
She is an intelligent and beautiful young female, very aware of the other elephants’ emotions.
Whenever the elephants encounter dangerous animals on the reserve, such as lions, she is one of the first of the herd to react in a protective manner. She is her mother’s biggest fan, always backing her up and giving her daughterly support. It is beautiful to watch her love and devotion to her.
Limpopo always helps Tokwe tend to the younger siblings, Kumbura and Timisa, and she spends most of her time with her best friend, Klaserie, who is just 6 months younger than her.

Today is March, 11, 2021. I’m watching this video not long after baby Fenya was rescued and came to Herd. It’s incredible to watch pictures of Limpopo as a little calf, such a beautiful baby, well fed and cared for, always protected by her loving family; humans and ellies. And it’s heartbreaking to compare this beautiful images with pictures of baby Fenya struggling to survive her devastating physical and emotional wounds. Although I know Fenya is in the best hands I’m aware she’s still in critical condition. I’m praying for your recovery, Fenya. Stay strong, my girl. Thanks Herd friends for all you work. 💕🐘💞

Sebakwe. He and Tokwe still hang out together. The others patriarchal lineage is not publicly known for some reason.

I love every single elephant in this magnificent herd, and I have a really soft spot for precious Limpopo! When she lifts her back leg to scratch the other back leg, it always makes me giggle without fail. She's grown up into an absolute beauty and takes so much after her mom. And those eyes and eyelashes make my heart melt every time. We love you, Popo!!!!!

Is that to calm them because they are feeling anxious or something like that? Ahh...there coming out of the pond extending his trunk repeatedly Limpopo seems to be almost begging for friendship; "Please tickle my trunk!" Then there with hime just lying down in front of that shrub...being a clownish Elephant with his food! Heart warming in every frame. Adine, you do know you have completely blown-up so many of the myths about "dangerous Elephant"... even to the bulls staying with the herd instead of being banished as they grow older. I can not find where your efforts are showing other African countries how to better live with their Elephant; however, my most sincere desires are that they are watching, that they are paying attention, and even those countries that now seem hell-bent on opening back up trophy hunting, and culling their Elephant are paying attention...will too come around to the gentle conservation methods that you have and are proving to be much much more beneficial for not only their Elephant but their rural human populations as well. Cheers to you! Regularly I sign all the petitions in favor of non-lethal Elephant conservation throughout Africa, but all too often I have my doubts they are effective protecting Elephant; however, I see your work proving Elephant preservation does work to be the real Gold Standard...I just hope and pray that what you do is adopted throughout Aftrica soon enough to not see these magnificent, gentle, loving, intelligent beings harmed further. Lots and lots of folks, the world over, are your fans, are rooting for you and your team to become the teachers, the leaders throughout Africa in enlightened, progressive Elephant conservation...and their critical habitats, too! ...and I'm still up for somehow getting your herd a ton or two of delicious peanuts...or a truck load or three of yummy sugar cane, or at least a couple "super soaker" water squirters for fun in the pond with them!
