Oh, children in my area of Minnesota were so privileged to have “lunch ladies”. The smells, the food and awesome taste and the love and care that went into each bite or piece of conversation. What a blessing. ❤. I thank them so much. I’m almost 71 and will always think of each and every one of those ladies who took their time and talent to care for children 🥰

I still sift flour (unbleached) and put 2 cups (25grams IIRC) in 1 quart freezer zip locks. I sift and bag up 5 lbs at a time and makes baking sooo much easier. Lots of recipes call for 2c flour and if i need more or less I can adjust. Flour needs to be sifted because otherwise you are using too much...it compacts.

They looked like landscaping. And he did the majority of the cooking. Nobody could cook to satisfy him. Thanks for the memories

My fondest memories are the special items I loved in elementary school in the mid fifties on and into the 60s with junior hi and onward. I still try to replicate many favorites but even the fish sticks (❤️) and numerous others. Oh the clover leaf rolls (2) with a dab of grape jelly I tied to disperse evenly on each pillowy bite.

Mr. Brown. You warmed my heart with your fashion show!! So good to have a good laugh. Your school memories are similar to mine, minus the saws , hatchet s and hammers.. haha!! We had two grades per room, 1 thru 8. The principal taught 7/8 and coached the boys basketball team. There were only 4 in my 8th grade class so the school was consolidated into a larger district. Sad day. The building sold off to a Christian school a few years ago , made me very happy. We had thee best hot lunches all from scratch. I can still see those beautiful faces smiling as they served all the delicious wonderful meals. We said grace before we ate. Sometimes it was my only meal. My dad had heart disease, four heart attacks, and passed away when I was 12. Those meals kept me... I will never forget how kind those lunch ladies and teachers were.

Mr. Brown's story brought back a lot of memories back for me. I went to a one room school, grades 1-8. We older students prepared lunch, from the big cans. I guess they couldn't afford to hire a cook. We enjoyed it though. I was the only student in my 8th grade class. Lol. We built forts, played ball with bats of pieces of wood or tree branches, had dug outs under the school house...soo many memories, life was good.

Bertie Yearout: Life was better back then. In today's world it seems/or is a nightmare of people being shot dead or terribly maimed, and innocent school children being shot dead in their school rooms. I went to a one room school also. When we had recess, Miss Edna Jane Rich, a very tall blond lady would come outside onto the school porch and blow her whistle and announce, "Recess is over. Come inside now." I think that must have been 1941 because WW2 had just started, and we had to practice the Air Raid Drills. Our school Principle, Mr. Ross at another school, was a very tall dark haired man who also helped cook the school lunches that were served in huge bowels on Wooden picnic tables covered in 'Oil Cloth' table cloths in the basement. He would also say Grace before we ate. The teachers ate with us, too. It was very much like a family setting. There was also a galvanized wash tub filled with apples grown on school grounds, and peaches and pears when they were ripe and ready. And, always fresh baked cookies laying on last nights newspaper on the "Cookie Table." White and chocolate milk was two cents a bottle with a straw. Every child would eat as much as they could, and when lunch was over, return to the class room for a rest period with their heads on their desk cradled in their arms...and fall into a "Lunch Nap." You and I have seen a lot happen in the world, and I understand what your comment was about. I don't think the younger generation is able to process our life back in the old days. And, as Bob Hope would say, "Thanks for the memories."

@@WhippoorwillHoller that’s great she works there. It’s hard work. After retiring from cooking I wanted to help people and I fell in love with it. Being 53 soon not sure how more yrs I can do it. We were hit bad with COVID every resident got it and we lost over a dozen. Every employee got it. But.. now we are coming out of it and there is light at the end of the tunnel. Stay safe

I worked for years cooking professionally, then became a nurse. I brought in food for my co workers, shared with friends and neighbors. I am now 74 and retired, with bad arthritis and can’t do as much physically as I used to. But, I still cook huge pots of chili and soups, cornbread, biscuits, etc. to share with friends and neighbors. Instead of making cookies this year I made dinners with enough for two servings featuring baked ham, fresh southern style green beans, red garnet baked sweet potatoes, and homemade biscuits. The people I gave it to just raves about it. And I had it for dinner at least four times! I now have the hambone with meat left on it in the freezer. Gonna make the roux Miss Lori made for gumbo and use ham and shrimp in mine, and share again. I also make a full dinner for people at a homeless shelter once a year, which is always fun for me and much appreciated by those who come to eat. Don’t stop cooking and sharing your good food! 😁

Some schools today. I wouldn't feed the food to my dog. When I went to school it was homemade like you make. Parents need to make a surprise visit to school for lunch. Most of the food the kids get goes into garbage. That's why they come home so hungry. We need to go back to a village where all parents support our kids. It takes a village to raise our kids.
