I shoot with pro bodies ie 1dx mark III, medium format bodies, 5dsr,5dxmk4, lots of big primes etc.. for years I have wanted a tiny full frame 35mm sensor body with a fun straightforward no computer workflow. My daily carry camera is my iPhone and which I use for my day to day photography which will now be finally replaced with the s9. I buy enough pro gear from my vendor that they are shipping me an s9 that I ordered today overnight for this Friday. Looking forward to putting it through its paces.

When the FX3 dropped, without an EV, there wasn't this much uproar... lol. When the Ricoh GR3/x dropped, with no EV...there wasn't this much uproar. When the Sigma FP dropped, without an EV, there wasn't this much uproar lol.. WHY ?! Lol.. You know what I think it is... Lumix / Panasonic gave the people, all people.. pros - intermediate - amateur, the ability to do things with the same tools that a lot of other people use.. But at a good price point. 6K ? Yup. Stabilization ? Yup. Ability to use and store 39 luts ? Yup. Shoot in Open Gate ? Yup. lol.. I mean, people are mad because... they feel the pressure.. Of people coming up from under / behind them lol. "TikTokers" (I dont believe this) now have a tool, or the power.. to play on the same field. And people are salty about that lol.

Nice one Rob. Looks like a fun camera right enough. Reminds me a bit of my first Sony RX-100, that was a beast in mouse clothing, and on reflection one of the best cameras I've owned. Same lack of EVF, but once past that it punched so far above its weight. This little Pannie looks like that, but with added steroids. All the best🙏👍

I’m liking this camera more and more. Hopefully the KZreadrs will keep bashing it so in 6 months prices on the used market are low…

The drama that the Lumix S9 brought mainly came from the KZreadrs, who are “pros”, pushing a product that is not good at all and saying that its actually awesome and comparing it to more professional cameras. Its good that consumers are getting more and more aware that what they see in KZread are mostly just hype pieces sponsored by companies who just want to sell and make a lot of money.

There might be more to this than you realise, my take is that its a camera that it should have been reviewed by creators not by reviewers, Did you like any of my pivots on the talking points ? its a hard shift to make when we already have gear.

It is awesome, that sensor is a pro sensor. All the features are for pros. The drama is centered around cosmetic features such as the grip, evf, hot shoe in a COMPACT NON-FLAGSHIP ENTRY LEVEL full frame camera body. And then they compare the prices with m4/3, APSC with the same body which is again, wrong. The reason these youtubers like it is in a studio or when covering an event such as weddings, you dont need a grip nor an evf nor a hotshoe nor a recording limit. None of those matter, because you put it in a tripod or gimbal or a cage, put a field monitor or atomos ninja with unlimited recording, and use studio lights and boom mics. This is a good camera for pros and for casual use when you dont want a full rig.

There was a lot I didn't cover in this video that I recorded as It was just getting too long but I'll add them to this comment over time as they come up. I think taking into perspective the Camera's Emotional Response I thought It was a good idea to try and shift the narrative to think about the benefits and some didn't make the cut as they are universal for all "non pro" looking cameras, perhaps I'll make a future video.

Good review. I have had a lot of Lumix scammers. What gets me with the S9 is primarily, but there’s no viewfinder my tiny GM five has a viewfinder It’s a real miss not to have a viewfinder Although yes, mostly we use the lcd But there are always spread situations where we do have to have a viewfinder They could have had it as an accessory for the hotShoe. I would’ve been fine with that. But no, EVF is a no go Also, they could’ve easily put more dials buttons on this body So although I like the looks and I think it’s a really good camera I will not be considering it sadly

Yeah thats fair! to be honest, I think that given the size there wouldn't be much room for that (they even didn't incldue a TRRS headphone like on phone , but a USB ev could be interesting but then again you could put a monitor on it and hood via HDMI and get headphones.... But I hear you.

It simply lacks a suitable compact, high-quality zoom lens. Small cameras on large lenses - that's not very ergonomic... Even the savvy target group - young contant creators - would certainly prefer the S5 2X if they are already in the Panasonic full-frame system. The S9 with a fixed 1.8 35 lens would certainly have been a hit.

There was some whining going on there in a few corners, they all would have been better off tossing those video essays out rather than posting. After all, it’s never a good idea to bite the hand that feeds you. And especially for Mr. Undone, how is he going to get equipment from any camera manufacturer going forward after he set off such a wave of negativity? Rather than “reform” the review system, he may instead have put himself out of the review business. Anyway, I’m looking forward to getting a copy of the S9 when they finally ship. I have a lot ideas I want to explore with this camera. I think of the S9 as the ideal small gimbal camera (RS3 Mini for instance). Because it’s so compact and light weight it’s not a strain, and attached to a gimbal you never have to worry about a wonky horizon. The camera is always level. Plus the package is small enough and light enough to balance on a monopod very easily. And though you couldn’t walk away from a setup like that and self-film, there’s nevertheless a lot of light duty filming which can be done this way even short person-on-the-street style interviews at an event if you add a wireless mic setup. In particular I’m waiting for the latest iFootage monopod to release (July?). It has pushbutton height adjustment so you get the camera to a new eye level in an instant, then 90% of the time you don’t have to use your arms and shoulders to keep the camera steady. The rig does the work. We will see.

Well honestly in my breif review expereince usually first reviews are just usually "information" and the real reviews come later, so I just took it as a PR blast from Japan hype around new product, but honestly I haven' tfound many people like me who come to cameras from phones in the review space.. funnily enough lots come from the GH4 :)

Gerald Undone didn’t create the controversy surrounding this camera, he just pointed out the highly biased “payola” infested review system surrounding the camera industry. A little honesty and humility from the content creator community would have served their subscribers better. I wonder how Lumix feels about their investment in KZreadrs now that this whole scheme seems to have blown up in their faces?

@@pdcorlisScheme? Have people been living under a rock until a few weeks ago? It’s much more open now than in the magazine era when information traveled slowly and the periodicals depended on camera manufacturers paying for advertising. That’s when camera companies had quite a bit of control over what got published. In this case it looked like they had fun in Kyoto and that’s fine with me. I also know that if there were any serious flaws with the camera Panasonic would not manage to hide them in the internet era. So as far as I’m concerned Gerald’s complaints were like complaining about the weather. Meaningless blather. And given the S9’s capabilities and limitations the price makes reasonable sense and I look forward to testing the camera for myself. I think it will fill a gap in my workflow.

If you are going to defend a camera by saying it shouldn't be compared to other cameras in what it lacks but by what it gains over a phone, you should also point out what you then lose over just using your phone. The only major advantage this has over a phone is a larger sensor, and because it has so many limitations, the ways this camera would best be used it would make it inferior to just using your phone. I could have seen an argument for a compact full frame camera with some of this ones limitations if it had inherited some phone features like a combination of built in memory in addition to the SD card, the ability to use its USB-C port to use headphones and other accessories, having an operating system like android on the camera that allowed for editing and social media apps, and having a cellular connection with the ability to post directly from the camera to those apps including live streaming. The limitations of the camera are significant and shouldn't be ignored. The argument that it's an upgrade from a phone is a poor one when you lose so much functionality over using a phone. If someone moves to something like this it's a significant investment. Anyone who delves into learning more about photography or filmaking would quickly learn how many limitations this camera has compared to many of its competitors, including other cameras within Lumix's own lineup. While I'm sure there would remain a small number of people that would find this camera appealing and be okay with its limitations, camera manufacturers that aren't high priced luxury brands don't have the luxury of creating niche products without mass appeal.

Well lets see , if lumix is gamble is correct there is a market for it. and you and I both can be impressed, Your points are very valid, and my perspective was really to give an alternative to just throwing shade. If this was a M43 camera I would be less forgiving, but we are talking FULL FRAME with the full stabilisation, I don't think people realise how small it is. Lets see how sales go.

@@robmulally It seems to me that the sensor size alone doesn't matter much to content creators coming from smartphones to their 1st camera. Actually in this particular case, being full frame is a huge disadvantage when combined with the lack of mechanical shutter as this will result in many unusable photos ruined by rolling shutter and banding (which doesn't happens in smartphones due to very small sized sensors). Another huge downside is that in order to take advantage of the amazing benefits that full frame sensors has, one must mount a decent lens on it, which is usually bulky and heavy specially for someone accustomed with smartphones; and talking about lenses, I'm failing to see any benefit in the offered 26mm F8. The way I look at the S9 is that it's really hard to justify the very existence of this product, specially considering the asked price. Definitely this product is not for many and we know that from the start, but I'm really struggling to see who is this for.

Look, I appreciate what you're doing here but people need to start questioning this reflexive need to defend a multi-national corporation and its camera. If you like it, fine but trying to convince people that they're to be annoyed by missing features on a 1500 dollar camera is kind of ridiculous. Sure a phone user might not care about an EVF but they can't care about things they don't know about. How would you feel if your kid was just 18, saved up all their money and then bought a car without windshield wipers? Would you say, 'oh but we live in California, it hardly rains here so the car wasn't intended to be used in rainy environments' No I don't think you would. Not having a mechanical shutter on your phone doesn't matter because the readout is so fast, it's not that fast on the s9. You can't know you're going to want that mechanical shutter until you start trying to do some street photography utilising blur (a common style) and fine all your vertical lines are slanted and warped and you've just dropped 2000 dollars on a body and lens. When you purchase things, there are norms and expectations about what it should include, especially if you're spending over 1000 dollars on it. I think a lot of KZreadrs are pros or rich people (often the same) who simply cannot understand why this is an issue because they have such a wealth of choices available to them. They need and EVF or headphone jack? They just pick up a different camera. The bitter and patronising way (not saying you) many KZreadrs have reacted to their audience's valid disappointment with this camera is sickening. I think there's a lot to like about the s9 but I don't think it's unreasonable to say that it missed the mark a little by trying to squeeze a FF sensor into such a small body. It's a niche product and it's fine for reviewers to say 'This thing is cool, I like it, but it's probably not a great option for most and isn't the best entry-level option for users'. Is that really too much to ask?

The electronic shutter limitations are so overblown IMO. I use e-shutter almost exclusively on my S5ii without issue, and the S9 is supposed to be better again (built-in synchro scan and 12bit images). According to those who have used it, it didn’t really present an issue in their use. It’s also a heavily video focused camera, and mech shutter does nothing in video anyway. I don’t think your wiper analogy is really applicable to be honest. Why couldn’t you make the same argument about other cameras that don’t have a LUT button, or don’t have open gate, or don’t have this level of stabilisation? Those things are more likely to affect this target user than the EVF/Mech S that they don’t even know about.

  • @robmulally

    @robmulally

I hear you and this is why i made this video, take your analogy and I would say, why you assume your kid wants a car and not a motorbike? maybe you dont know what they want and assuming they need a car with a winshield wiper is incorrect and perhaps the bike shouldn't have been given to car reviewers? I hope you see that perspective.
