I tested out the different resolutions the GH6 has to offer to see if there’s any difference in image quality, sharpness and the usefulness of the different aspect ratios. I came to some interesting conclusions.

    Good evening from sunny Blackpool. Well, the wee small hours as I wait for another masterpiece to render out.🤣 I'm with you on the 4k UHD for filming as I find it the most versatile. I did try a project in C4K but it was just a complete pain to crop and rescale the footage that it just wasn't worth it, especially as the world revolves around 16:9 anyway. BTW, lovin my second hand Panasonic G9 for photos. Do you think its worth spending £100 for the vLog profile for it?

  • @RedFrameTech

    Hi Frank. Great to hear you’re loving your G9 🙂 I think if you want to start using it for video, get the most dynamic range out of it and match it to other cameras, then V-log is worth it. If you’re mainly using it for photos, then don’t get v log and shoot the occasional video in Natural for example and you’ll get great results. The V-log upgrade does however give you waveform, which in itself could be worth the upgrade..

    C4k is not wider because the GH6 doesn’t crop the sensor regardless of resolution recorded. I think it is useful if you know you want 17:9, but as you say, if you don’t know or are not sure, UHD might be a better choice. Also if shooting Prores you unfortunately don’t have the choice of UHD so C4K can be good to keep file size down compared to 5.7k. Great video, will have to check out your others!

    Hi Very nice test, I did the same with GH5s but it is a multiaspect ratio sensor andnit a true MFT...1.8 crop. But I never shoot anyway in C4K... DZO lenses are you happy with them? They are truly parfocal if I remember correctly but kind of dark... I am waiting myself to get the S5iiX, I already have 2 S5 and some L mount lenses but really it is hard to completely.move out of MFT. Still shooting a lot with GH5s and BMPCC4K. But for run and gun, hybrid solo shooting situation like events I tend to go for the S5iiX...and actually on tripod for concert events the 60-600 sigma who coast more than the S5ii body 10* Zoom could be amazing This kind of job is actually done for me with GH5s were I can push the iso to second base 5000 in Vlog...And the autofocus is acceptable in 50 fps. But Panasonic FF Vlog image is really nice...pity that Blackmagic is kind of out of the or at least it is how I feel it...the Ursa 12K had potential...d

    Thanks! I can definitely see why you would go for the S5IIx. I think Panasonic did a great job with that camera. Gh5s is also a great camera. I’d like to add one to my arsenal 😄 I’m very happy with the DZO lenses. Not the sharpest and T2.9, but truly par-focal, internal zoom and 12 aperture blades. Bokeh is buttery smooth and background separation is really something else with these lenses. Never seen anything like it with other lenses I’ve used. I’ll do a full review on them soon.

    I assume they did it this way because of the black bars you used to get on either side with the GH5. So no need to crop in to fill out the side areas, and also no need to add black bars. So if you were shooting a narrative piece, you'd film in C4K, frame accordingly without the extra steps in post, and differentiate from something specifically for TV.

  • @RedFrameTech

    @RedFrameTech

    You'd have to specify a bit further as MOV is just the container that ProRes is wrapped in as well. But I'm assuming you're talking about ProRes vs H264/H265? Then the answer would be that for average use, average grading, there's no perceivable difference. But for green screen work/keying it's worth shooting ProRes. There's no difference between 4K UHD vs C4K, apart from the 256 pixels extra horizontal resolution in C4K

    The screen resolution also matters a lot. 4K won't be much better than 1080 on a 1080 monitor. I think people forget to take into account the intended viewing screens when choosing a resolution. What is the resolution of the monitor you used for the test? I use a 4k 32" monitor and I can see a difference, but it's also a specialized editing monitor. I've yet to try comparing 5.7 or 5.8 vs 4k/1080. For most applications 1080 is still plenty so I choose aspects and resolutions based on how easily it can be cropped into different formats like vertical for social media

    C4k is better for some anamorphic lenses based on the aspec ratio, with C4k 17:9 you will get real cinemascope with a 1.33x lens, if you have a 2x anamorphic lens then you must use 5.7k, resolutions of the GH6 are based on anamorphic lenses, the sensor is 4:3 and you have to modify capture using anamorphic lenses, BTW C4K is NOT useless.

  • @RedFrameTech

    Not sure I’m following you. 5.8K open gate would be the mode for anamorphic, regardless of squeeze factor. You can crop it to any aspect ratio you want afterwards whilst keeping the same width as with shooting 17:9. Also, why would you have to shoot 5.7k when using a 2x anamorphic lens as opposed to C4k? As I said in the video, 17:9 is the widescreen standard. Has nothing to do with anamorphic afaik. Anamorphic originally came from squeezing a wide image onto 3:2 35mm film

    Fair enough. Although, if you deliver in 2:1 and shot 4K UHD, it's only a one-click step to add black bars and you keep a bit of room to reframe vertically. And 4K UHD still looks good on a big 4K screen. So, not sure I'm convinced of the usefulness. But if it works for you, that's great! 🙂
