I don't really see how it's phenomenal all he did was basically do it in the same style and even tried The Sandlot her and it just comes out as it kind of a generic we cover in my opinion and nothing special. He didn't bring his own flavor to it or arrange it differently or anything really just sounds like some guy sitting around at a party covering the song sorta. It's a decent straight up cover and like I said I like Luke Combs it's just nothing special and definitely not a great Recreation

This came out my Senior year 1988
What a great cover. He treated the song with great respect and made a cover that I'm sure Tracy approves of. Amazing job. Oh and I too approve that he didn't alter the lyrics for gender. That is a sign of great respect to the writer. That is a tradition in folk music. Respect!

One of the most beautiful and moving songs ever written. This is a beautiful cover - so wonderful the way he honors Tracy’s arrangement yet makes it his own.
Fast Car is one of my favorites. Great cover!
LOVE this song from 1988 and this version it still hits home in 2023
A good song has the ability to hit deep emotions . A great song combines this technique with a striking melody/vocals. The longing to leave a broken home life and fresh hope resonates strong. I appreciate Luke's talent. Excellent

Only the best blues and traditional (country) folk musicians do it, so he is in very good company by honoring the song as written.
I love Luke Combs and this is a great cover of the song! I gotta be honest, I liked the original by Tracy Chapman but I was too young to really pay much attention to the lyrics. The song is so much better when you actually know what the meaning behind it is. ❤
This was my childhood best friend and my favorite song to sing. She passed away 8 years ago and this took me right back ❤

How is this your childhood friend and your favorite song if she died 8 years ago but this song hasn’t been out for even a year
I have always loved Tracy Chapman version, but Luke has done this song justice, not many singers can pull off a remake song like he just did. Love it.

Luke sounds great singing Fast Car. This song suits him. I heard it on the radio, and it wasn't a country station. It's nice to hear Fast Car again, in 2023.

No it sounds weird. If he sings the song in first person, it’s through his vantage point. He’s calling himself a “checkout girl” which sounds weird which an obviously male voice who isn’t transgender.

I think the "checkout girl " line adds to his sense of feeling emasculated. "My dreams aren't going anywhere,I'm stuck I this small town, doing a job normally reserved for women- a checkout girl." It adds another dimension to the song. "Checkout boy" would've worked too, but the original line sung by a man makes it all the more powerful, to me.

Came here thinking I would hate it but I didn’t. Luke did a respectable job with this song
Great song... full of poignancy, longing, hopes, resignation and sadness. I was skeptical that a male country artist could do it justice, but I really liked Luke's rendition.... it's respectful to Tracy, yet his own. Kudos for not changing the lyrics. No need, it's not a gender based song, it's about what people go through. I have Tracy's original recording.
It’s not a bad cover to be honest. It was a huge challenge to cover Tracy Chapman and make it sound country.
