Lufia 2 was hands down the best RP turn based game on the SNES. Amazing graphic style, wide array of characters, beautiful music, multi layered map travel ( submarine, land, skyboat ) casino mini games, the ancient cave ( a game within the game imo ) a comedy duo of 2 goofy bad guys, and an AMAZING story with anything but a cookie cutter ending. And then you pop in Street Fighter 2. The difference becomes crystal clear. Lufia 2 was ahead of it's time and in a league of its own. No other SNES game was THIS extensive. Legend of Zelda, Link to the past will always be my first memory when thinking of the SNES. But Lufia 2 will always be the best memory.

There is a hammer glitch where if you use the hammer on the last frame of movement you will actually move an extra space. The first time you go to get the engine for the ship. When you leave your boat the place under the castle has a cutscene trigger. If you use the hammer glitch to skip the event trigger you will instead trigger the event that sends you to sinistral island for the end game.

Welp that comment made me check this out, and yes it works. Doesn't do anything for the Run mentioned in the Video, but the general Speedrun of Lufia II could get shortened by 15~ Minutes or something like that because of this little Trick. So yeah, there are tricks in the Dark even Speedrunner don't know about, and here it is a perfect example of it. I might mess with that Trick the next few days to see if it can potentially even do more Stuff. Thanks for the Input!
@KaizerWarrex
2 жыл бұрын
@@VultuZ Thanks for verifying this. My friend had discovered this trick by accident back in like 2003-2005. We found this by accident because we used to think it was hilarious to slide around the game using the hammer. Never thought of its potential to save time, but we used to do the Castle Skip to make the game more challenging. I was honestly afraid to talk about it, as i could not find ONE PERSON who knew of it that knew of Lufia 2. And thought it may have been a defect in my physical copy and not reproducable. I subscribed and hope to hear back on how you can put it to use.

Man, what a crazy way for a glitch to get introduced to the speedrunning community...
@kouron
2 жыл бұрын
@@starbournehero771 These kind of community interactions happen relativly often, imo. It's just most of the time some sort of school yard talk that runners and runner-adjacent people then try themselves. Here it is one of the nice classical cases of someone knowing of a glitch/bug for years, it gets tested, verified and might get implemented. He can pat himself on the shoulder, he might have forced runners to execute even more frameperfect inputs. :D
Players making games glitch out this badly usually feels like some kind of dark art, but with Lufia 2 it's impossible to surprise me. My only reaction to hearing you can warp to the credits in under a minute is "Yeah, that sounds right."
"...and then a runner named Matt Turk would swoop in to take the record..."
When I first played Lufia II, I thought the story was kinda slow, but after few hours it really picked up and I couldn't put it down. That bittersweet ending always gets me.
You’re like a speed runner yourself with these videos - there’s no fat on these bones, it’s 100% entertaining. Great content
Lufia 2 is an incredible game, you 100% made the right choice in covering it. It's one of the best RPGs on a system that has some of the best RPGs of all time on it.
The power of "bout some like has". I love that.

Good Video! Amazing how you managed to present the story about this so accurate. Most of the information about these runs got lost over the years because of poor recordings from our (runners) side. Most of the Videos and information about Lufia II got lost im Limbo (that basically includes everything except the Ancient Cave Runs). Right now i wouldnt be able to pull a run like this off anymore. I haven't done this in forever. By the way since it didn't got mentioned in the Video: I have no real proof for that, but i wouldn't recomend doing the Level 0 Glitch stuff (especially the Name and Inventory corruption) on a real Lufia II cartridge. I had multiple ROM's dying and crashing randomly by trying these things back then. If this would happen to a real cartridge, i couldn't forgive myself by not at least warning people not to try it. Anyway, nice Video, that explains my influx on the Lufia II Videos i had on KZread the last 2 days :P Keep it up

Yeah, I got the impression this was going to use a cartridge trick at first. Good to hear this warning about not using the hardware.
Lufia II was my first speedgame ever, so it has a special place in my heart. And it's great to see you cover an RPG that has been not as known as the big boys out there, even though the gameplay is very solid! Great explanation about this glitch too! I knew about the final result of this glitchy run. But I did not know the entire history of it. So I am glad that you took the time and effort to make such a great video that explains it all.

There was definitely a time whenI attempted to go for a record speedrun with Lufia 2. It was around 2013 or so, because I remember trying to challenge Cvagts time of 4:02:23, but I just never could get some inputs right, leaving my best time at about 4:21:51. Then Happysquid 89 came along the following January, a day before my B-day, completely obliterated Cvagts time by almost an hour, and I lost all motivation to keep at it.

So, basically give the game a stroke and make it give you the ending?
Lufia 2 was my first "I have to own this cart" rental. it didn't introduce me to roguelike mechanics, that was a genesis game, but damn did it make me LOVE them
1:47 i used to love that guy's fanfiction back in the day
Lufia 2 was one of my favorite RPGs for the SNES, but it was definitely janky. The coding for the menus, and especially the inventory, was held together with the equivalent of spit and duct tape. Even just a little messing around could result in the minor permanent renaming of Selan to eSlan, or bug the game into an infinite reloading loop that wipes all saved progress (including disabling Retry mode). But I loved the characters and the story. I wish there was enough interest to have it remade for the current generation.
Looks like I subscribed to the channel just in time the other day! Lufia 2 finally got the recognition it deserves as one of the SNES' finest JRPG gems a decade late, but it's always held the crown for most openly glitched RPG on the SNES. It was so easy to stumble upon all the corruption you can cause via menu inputs alone that most players probably discovered it casually out of curiosity. And this isn't even getting into goodies like the famously scuffed Submarine Shrine!
Thanks for making a video on Lufia. A big part of my gaming childhood. The game holds up so well after all these years. There's some great mods out there too. I wonder how many of these glitches are still available on the PAL release - I think a lot of them were patched in the version I grew up with. I mean, I'm sure speedrunners would all be running NTSC anyway, but still.
Awesome video as always. Keep up the great work my dude.
Lufia is such a cool game and it amazes me how people find this stuff.
I recall getting this game at a young age. One of the corners of the cartridge was broken, and you could see inside. There was a save already on the game when I got it. When I started a new game, I had access to the pots that the egg dragon gives you that increase the stats of who you give them too. I thought that was the coolest thing, until now :) Great vid mate, ty!
I do appreciate that SMTV OST you used! Great stuff as always :)
I'm impressed that I actually recognized the text in that screenshot on your community post. Lufia 2 was a good game, glad I played it ages ago.

Thank you for this one, BTW. I've been wondering about this glitch for a while (it has been mentioned at *DQ, but I haven't seen anyone describing it in any detail before this, other then that it involves a glitch and level "0")
bout some like has
Oh, man. Lufia 2 was my jam. It's still one of my favorite RPGs. I definitely never knew about these glitches, though. Still learning things after all these years!
I loved this game. It had a lot of issues though that I never understood how they got past play testing. Thankfully they never stopped the game from being beaten. The bugs I found: 1) Changing audio config by pushing left stomps memory. 2) Some obscure caves are missing names and display garbage text. 3) Town names upon entry and in the warp list were translated differently and don’t match, though they sound the same when read out loud. 4. The tile set is corrupted in the submarine shrine and you cannot see where you are going. You must complete this part to advance the main story. Thankfully you only need to walk forward and the rest is dialog. 5. Same with the bottom floor of the Ancient Cave. A neat thing I found. If you beat Gades in your first battle with him, he has 8000 HP, you still lose, but you get the Gades Blade and he sounds less condescending and more pissed off. You also get a ton of experience and gold. However you probably only have a shot without a ridiculous amount of grinding in Retry mode as it quadruples experience and gold earned. Even in Retry mode with minor grinding, it’s still difficult to keep Tia alive while battling Gades.
Neat analysis! Was a very interesting & novel topic! Thanks for uploading!
Bout Some Like Has. The most cathartic phrase in the English language.
Haven't really seen much of this game but still very interesting nonetheless. Awesome video Doc :)

I remember Lufia 2 being really broken when I played it when I was younger. Pressing L and R in the menu, accessing the config menu, and capsule monsters were all messed up for me. I remember one of the maps before getting dual blade got blanked out which basically softlocked me out of beating the game lol. Don't know if these were common glitches. My copy was used and then later survived a house fire lol.

The map where you get Dual Blade (Submarine Shrine) is broken on every North American copy of Lufia 2 but can still be navigated by trial and error. IIRC it's because the tileset was modified to censor crosses, though that might not really be why, it's just an explanation I read once. The same thing happens to the final floor of the Ancient Cave.

Great video man. I love this game and it makes me happy to see it get attention. You earned a subscribe from me.
I respect and admire the effort, commitment and knowledge that these runners have for their games. I will say that at the same time, there comes a point where I stop seeing what they're doing as speedrunning a game, and start seeing it more like a competitive glitch showcase. But as I said before, nothing but respect and admiration for their talent and effort. Keep on exploring and having fun :)
it's always fascinating to me how people manage to find wild glitches like this

The lvl 1 dungeon in lufia II remains one of my favorite 'mini' games in any rpg.
Great video! I adore this RPG SR history videos as I'm not really into speedrunning and frankly, I'm not really fond of speedrunning as entertainment or a sport. But I love a good story and speedrunning is full of them and RPG's have been sorely underrepresented. I also must say I loved your use of dropshadows on screenshots, windowed gameplay etc. It gave the video a very professional aura. I can't wait for you to cover some PS1 RPG's maybe in the future.
I love this series. I own the first and second and I love going back and playing them again. Have great rng memories from that game.
Thanks for doing this I’m more interested in this game anyway and you gained a sub

the game that can be speedrun 1800-2400 times a stream
But I didn't click to see a sub-one-minute run. I clicked to see the new DoctorSwellman video!
yay one of my favorite games thanks for doing this
I loved this game and the ancient cave. Not sure if the glitch also worked in the German version I played as a kid.
That Castlevania 64 music taking me back.
Having mentioned the soundtrack,I seem to be missing the track you start at 5:23ish, unless it's not from a Lufia game(it sounded like an Ogre Battle track to me)-my copies of the soundtracks for the games are woefully incomplete so it wouldn't be a surprise if I just forgot some of them...sadly.
Good call on not picking FF. This was an interesting run I would have never seen otherwise.
Lufia 1 was one of my favorite games as a kid. I was only able to beat it through renting a cartridge that someone else saved nearly at the end. But that twist blew my mind, and to this day I still regard it as one of the best RPGs. With that said, Swellman's video inspired me to break Lufia II as well, my best run being 1 min 18 sec so far.
Lufia 1 and 2 deserves more love.
