“Not an actual doctor, I just play one on TV.”

Making video essays about speedrunning and the amazing history around it + Dumb retrospective ramblings. Mainly focusing on JRPGs.

    I'm the one who made the bacon chart at 12:40. Takes me back to a simpler age and being surrounded by good folks. Thanks for making this video.

    I still don't understand the issue with "spliced runs". It's fine if you want to make a separate category for them and linear runs, but why do so many speed runners demand they be labeled "fake" or "illegitimate "?

  • @DoctorSwellman
    @DoctorSwellman19 сағат бұрын

    The problem isn’t with the fact that they’re done, it’s just that they’re submitted under false pretenses. Otherwise I think most are fine with it overall

    @DoctorSwellman Then why did you label them as fake and illegitimate in this video? Why not state they just didn't qualify as a Linear run?

    @@addambelmont3050 The run was submitted to SDA as a single segment run. The player in question spliced footage together, which would be fine if it were a segmented run, but the person didn't submit it as such and lied to the community about it

    The community very much views that 2005 run as illegitimate, the runner claimed it was recorded in one sitting but after review its clear that can't be the case and is very much cut and dry deception. Now we just use this run as a reference for what was known at the time and a demonstration of the strats. Plenty of discussion has been had about this but it comes down to everyone being on a level playing field, if everyone agrees to do things in one sitting but you splice your best segments together and lie about it then thats clearly unfair cheating. If everyone agrees to put their best segments together and be open about it then there would be no issue, the issue comes from the dishonesty. We don't call TASes fake, because they are upfront and clearly identify themselves.

    @myth1975 Once again, the context is not solely predicated on the specific run of Minish cap in question, but all splice runs in general.

    It's cool that you made this video in your own way. Recently I've seen so many summoning salt rip offs that seeing this video is refreshing P.S. Baba Is You music is broken, soooo good for this kind of videos

    If I had time for the hobby, I know I would be way more interested in glitch hunting and breaking games than I would be in speedrunning. I break stuff all the time accidentally in games by just being indecisive and then ending up trying to do two things at the same time, etc.

    Started my first ever playthroughs of FF and wanted to Platinum every game. 1-6 were great and 7-9 were challenging, but not bad. In fact, they were amazing. 10 can rot in a pit...

    mind if i share a little story of how i found out about this game and the connection it has for me? a german youtuber named gronkh was my first ever lets player. he used a lot of different music in his very long lasting minecraft lets play. one of these songs was my favorite but i never knew where it was from... a few years ago FOR NO REASON AT ALL i decided to play lufia 2 for the first time ever on a "totally legit nintendo console" there i found it Lexis Shaia Lab the song the german youtuber used that i loved so much. it was in lufia 2 all this time. randomly picking up this game, i finally found this amazing song. that and the story of lufia 2 made it a game i treasure even tho i never played it before :D and now i got this video recommended YEARS after all of this happened

    I think the best part of speedrunning isn't the fast play, or even the execution. For me, it's glitch discovery. Finding out new ways to interact with games is so gratifying, even if I can't execute them :^)

    Idk if anyones discovered it, but when i was young playing ff1 on nes, i wasnt very far in..maybe shortly after garland..idk what happened or how, but i turned into the airship and was even able to fly in caves. No random encounters, but i couldnt figure out what happened or how to revert it so i had to sadly restart. Has anyone accomplished this that youre aware of, or maybe someone could figure it out n put my childhood soul to rest and maybe help break speed running?
