The first time I ever heard Lucius was when they performed "Born Again Teen" here on The Late Show years ago; it stopped me in my tracks, I had to know who they were, and I have loved them ever since. Good Grief is one of my absolute favorite albums ever.

Some posters are willing to say "not to my taste" and that's fair. IMO this was a good live spin on the recorded version, so I'm not feeling those complaints at all. Lucius are phenomenal vocalists, which is what keeps me coming back, and if you ever watched the acoustic Live at Newport version of Dusty Trails on KZread, you know what I mean...and you can see that Brandi Carlile (who's in Newport, and on the studio version of this song) thinks so too. I imagine Sheryl Crow feels the same. The people who are insisting that they are just no good are expressing their tastes as if they are immutable fact. I hate to say that I've seen a fair bit of KZread comment trolling of women artists appearing on late night shows lately. So if someone needs an endorsement from male musicians...I discovered them via their guest appearance on the War On Drugs latest album.

I feel like I need to defend Lucius' honor. A lot of people seem to think this was an off performance. At least one person noted that late night music spots can be hard for artists to do quality control on -- but others have suggested that they are new or weak performers. They are neither. Someone else pointed to the White Lies live video they released a couple months ago as an example of how good they can be live, and I will second that. Colbert had COVID last week, and I could imagine that they had to do a fast reschedule with multiple musicians. I could also imagine that they might not have had much or any time to rehearse, or to do a thorough soundcheck. It can happen. Tom Petty played the No Nukes concert way back, but you won't find him in the movie, because he declined to be included. As I recall, he said the band was playing borrowed instruments, and I think maybe he said they had not been together for a while and hadn't had time to rehearse. I do remember his quote about it, which was approximately "a lot of people thought I was a c**t for pulling out, but it wasn't something I'd wanna see on late night tv for the rest of my life." So it goes sometimes.

I see by previous comments this performance hasn't gone over for everyone. For such a big celebration onstage, the song needed a cathartic moment, or a stronger line for a sing-along, also seeing the song as being weak. If Sheryl had got in there to sing why everyone should be having fun, it might have been well-done.

I... NGL, not my favorite performance on the show. I could see the song being fine... but the lead singers weren't in tune with each other at all, and it just feels very Adult Contemporary without any real passion behind it? Like, something like when you had Sleater-Kinney on was one thing for raw, they're a Riot Grrl act who are all about the grungier post-rock scene. But this feels like it's intended to be a more produced pop sound, and it just... doesn't work here? Checking out some of their music videos, the girls have a great produced sound together, so maybe this was just an off night?

He won the Grammy for best arrangement for “Spinning Wheel” (“what goes up, must come down...”) and was the alto sax player. (Check out BS&T if you want to hear amazing horns.) Funny, dry sense of humour guy with a rare but coy smile. Fred used to make us do weird things to tunes on the spot: change the key from major to minor, change time signature from 4/4 to 3/4... He kept me on my toes, making me sight read his sax lines from his arrangements! I’ll never forget it. It was truly an honour. Berklee is the best!

For the record, I'm 60 and I adore the "live at KEXP" set.

Go watch any other video of theirs. The white lies live video they just put out, or any version of Dusty Trails. Or this full concert. Their voices are definitely not weak. Not sure what’s going on with this recording, but they sound better normally. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYGt0ZlriZOzcps.html

Really don't like it. If it came out in the mid 80s it still wouldn't have turned heads. The sound also is quite blunt

I just turned in to see what Sheryl Crow was doing. Pj? That can’t be Sheryl. Boring slow singing. 🥱Lame choreography.🫤 Sheryl must be related, to have take a hit on her song choice.

love lucius generally, but not a fan of anything retro disco probably because I lived thru that mess the first time. so this album's not going to take with me and that's okay. most of their others have! but this performance was kind of awkward for a show closeout. it's not exactly the national tv exposure either jess and holly would look for, but that's life at network tv. definitely an engineering disconnect as well, but that's not unusual for talk show musical performances. they'll get better at this the more practice they get on bigger stages. a lot of bigger acts don't like doing shows like this for a reason. too much out of their creative control.

Ah well, that's life like you said :) This song is actually my introduction to Lucius, if you don't count their guest vocals on Brandi's You and Me on the Rock. Any exposure for an artist is good exposure, but I get wanting one's fave act to hit it big with songs one actually loves.
