I get your confusion because typically an apology is viewed as an admission of guilt. In fact an apology is the acknowledgement of another's feelings. He was apologizing to his fans. Also my take away from his documentary was his feeling of isolation when he was ostracized. Almost 3 yrs...that would demoralize anyone. Hindsight is 20/20.Upon reflection he knew he should have been more selective. However that does not negate his feelings towards his haters. The accent:Lucas speaks at least 4/ 5 languages. He is from Hong Kong( British till 2000) were English is officially 2nd language. Not your typical tail between the legs comeback. So kudos to SM and Lucas. Lastly JOOHONEY is STARSHIP not SM. He has never been rebranded as he has been 💯 since before NO MERCY and subsequent debut.

I think he will take the English route because SM has decided to appeal to “International Fans” which have largely continued to support him despite the scandal. This is a strong comeback for him in my opinion, now that he’s performing full songs by himself and in a language he’s going to need to learn very quickly. As always! Appreciate your honest reviews! I knew this wouldn’t be your cup of tea 😂

@@benjridimalek9051 I honestly hope this is the case but from what I’ve followed he’s lost a tremendous following in both Korea and China due to the expectations that come with being an idol (Hence the message of this song). The “Western” tone is a strategy, and they even included predominantly Western reporters in the Plan A MV. SM have every intention to rebrand Lucas as an international star/favorite bc that’s where the money and his predominant support is 🤷🏾‍♀️

  • @leedongwok86

In my opinion the documentaries were for his Korean and Chinese fans, as he is attempting to win their love back. Remember he used to be very popular in China (with participation as regular host of hugely popular Keep Running reality show) and in Korea too he was the first NCT member to be invited to a multiple mainstream Korean talk shows despite debuting much later and him not being a Korean or even fluent in Korean. Not to mention his multiple brand endorsements and being model runway. Regardless whether the allegations contain truth or lies his image were tarnished there so as per Korean culture, he has to carefully apologize and sort-of begging back for approval there. BUT I think this MV is specifically for his international fans who have been mostly supporting him. I believe that's why it is fully in English. SM doesn't even bother to make his debut songs in Chinese or Korean because it is still too early since he is still being hated. This MV is sort of "the explanation" for the international fans by addressing the allegations as lies, hating comments, him being an alien (he is hated for not being Korean but getting a lot of attention in Korea, and in China he is trolled because he is mixed Thai (darker skin tone, not same llike Ten who is of Chinese breed in Thailand- the Chinese netizen even made fun of Lucas skin color and facial feature he is literally called as "monkey" there)

I think one of the reasons he was attacked on social media by the crazies is because he was so popular and fans didn’t like that he was more popular than their favourites. Another reason that the Chinese didn’t support him is that he’s from Hong Kong, and if you remember there was a lot of pro democracy protests happening in Hong King at the time.

So true! And his hate train is so huge because there’s 22 other members in the group and each had solo stans that were jealous of him. As soon as they saw the scandal pop up they were ready to make it worse and spread even more lies because this is want they’ve always wanted. When evidence of his innocence came out they didn’t want to hear it or even consider it. They wanted him out for their own selfish reasons. If he came back they’d have to watch their favs get “pushed to the back” again. Funny thing is THEY are the reason for the dying momentum of the group at their peak. Now they’re scared karma is coming back on them which is why they’re trying to boycott Riizes comeback because they’re scared what happened the Lucas will happen to seunghan

Lucas is from Hong Kong. His mother tongue is Cantonese, it's not a dialect of Chinese but rather a language. Then Hong Kong was a British colony so they all had to speak English too, but what is the accent in a colony or former colony? British accent but which UK accent, they had natives at all HK schools or HK natives teaching so there is like an English-Cantonese type of accent? then at 16 he left HK for S.Korea and learnt Korean for years. And yet he had to sing in WayV in Chinese Putonghua and in English... (in SuperM English aswell). Then in Korean they use many English words but with a korean chopped weird pronunciation. Also if one watches US films, series and listens to US music, gets also different sources for pronunciations... Plus then he might have some SM instructor telling him better pronounce this like this or that to just sound better, but no one is telling him to follow a standard accent from Sussex, or from Wyoming, and stick to it...😂😂😂 I guess it's weird to listen to it for an English native speaker... But I don't think he would have attracted anyone suddenly rapping in Cantonese...He isn't a "Chinese unit" to promote in China so he also doesn't need to do it in Chinese Putonghua, weird if he chose Korean, maybe? i think English makes sense when you want to reach an international audience... just like XG does. So... any option you'd give him is not his mother tongue anyway, it's clear that he was going to be critisized no matter what 🙃

The documemtary is confusing for most westerners just like when actors, singers etc have to apologize for whatever scandal, apologize for the scandal being an inconvenient to fans, members, fellow workers, society... He didn't make the documentary because he cared about the haters op8nions but because of his fans and people who supported him. He apologizes for his immature behaviour of trying to go after those sasaengs and failing and his actions leading to proboems for WayV, for his fans, for his company, for his family etc. It might give the idea of "f k you all i'm the baddest" if one raps in English but i don't think that is the purpose. Lol I think his English accent is choppy since it's not his native language; even back in the day, his English on songs has been this way.. it's not a front. Speaking of the documentary, personally, I enjoyed seeing/hearing that he's changed his persona to be less cocky & he's listening more; I don't think he's trying to be a bad boy, but I do think he's more hardened because of his experience... Maybe for native English speakers it’s a problem but as a non native English speaker it’s not a problem and i’m kind glad it’s all in English, i think regardless of the accent, his message should reach many people from the start without them having to dig for the meaning. And also i think that in a situation like the one he was in you can feel like he expressed in the documentary and also feel like he says in the song, i mean the sadness and feeling lost in the beginning and even throughout everything it’s very plausible but you can be feeling very angry at the same time, especially if you feel like it’s injustice . And when given the chance to come back, you are entitled to feel confident and have hope so you come up with a song like this and i think this one is very empowering especially for him. Also in plan A you can see that he still expresses that he did indeed at some point feel fear and like being attacked and feeling small , this was expressed through that little mouse and the article the journalist was writing calling it a rat while the orhers where chasing him, and also the mouse after it’s transformation can be seen looking at himself a little lost and confused , and I could go on and on but anyway, you can’t really say there is no correlation between what he said in the documentary and the song

The documentary was for the Korean and Chinese fans, I feel like. The songs being in English is an appeal to western audiences who dont gaf about the scandal. All in all, i dont think its a confusing message. Im sure hes regretful of some of his actions, for which he apologized. But at the same time, a lot of it was bullsh*t. Im not even a Lucas stan and I couldn't believe the hate he was getting. They were treating him like he was Kris Wu or something. It was ridiculous.

I wonder if it's because of the influence of education in Hongkong or his music idol in the industry. But maybe both are influencing. I learned English ans my lecturers used British English, so I automatically imitate the way they pronounce some words, that are quite different from American accent. Later I watched a lot of Hollywood movies, so I also absorb their accent, too. So imagine talking in New York flow/accent but with a lil bit sprinkle of Brits. 😂😂 And I love the song, the music screams 'English', so I couldn't imagine it in other language, especially Chinese 😫.

I loved the song!! What I get from these two versions is that Plan A would be what the company and also society, especially the Korean one, wanted in the first place, which is an apology. So even if he wasn't guilty, or he didn't want to apologize, he could not say no. He was forced to, like many other artists in the K-pop industry, always wanting to find them guilty. Plan B would be him really expressing his truth, telling the world what he couldn't before. PD: The accent thing. As I spanish girl who speaks English as a second language, I get the different kinds of accents that he makes hahaha. It could have been intentional, of course, but in Spain the English that's taught to us is the UK one, but we are constantly exposed to the American one due to TV shows, movies and music. So I get the changes in accent. It happens to me all the time. Overall, I liked his debut as a solo artist. I think it's a good chance to make him shine! Hope to see more from him and your reactions too

SM always force their artists to apologise for bs, eg Karina apologising for having a boyfriend 💀 maybe Lucas did lead some girls on and he apologised for hurting their feelings but they were petty and wanted to ruin his life so they over exaggerated and claimed SA which is something a lot of stalkers do because they know people are going to take it seriously. I’m glad Lucas got to express some of his emotions at least in this track.

Let's not even talk about China, the Asian industry in general was not safe for him at some point, I differ with you in that the song gives an idgaf vibe on the contrary it is telling his story, his truth about the whole situation in a cathartic way to through music, the documentary was to explain how he over carried all this and the song is to call up everyone who wanted to tear him down, anyway it is a matter of opinions, some like it, others don't

Anyone whose ever pretended like they new the full story of what occurred or what he was actually thinking. its very rare to get a point of view from Kpop artists when a scandal breaks and I commend his bravery in doing so.

His mother tongue is Cantonese. But it would have been weird suddenly debuting as a solo artist for SM in Cantonese language... He isn't WayV now so he doesn't have to do it in Putonghua (Chinese). To me, even if SM is S.Korean, seems wiser to use mainly English although he does sprinkle a bit of Korean ( think i heard..) to reach international audiences... like XG, Japanese working in S.Korea singing in English...

It was never proven that the accusations for which he was sunk were real. In fact, some were denied. The documentary shows us all the sh*t he has had to endure, which is also not surprising, if we add to the radicalism of the "fans", the pressure to be successful in life whether in Korea, China or Japan. 😭😭 Lucas is from Hing Kong, which was a British colony since 1842 and English was the only official language, de jure and de facto. Even if the british finally gave it back to China, still they keep the education in English a5 schools like anywhere else, obviously they'd have HK native teachers with their "british-Cantonese" tyoe of accent, not a full UK Essex type of accent, obviously!! The fact that he them learned Korean at 16 where they have so many English words but they pronounce them in a korean way all weird, and also USA music and Movies etc with their USA varied accents... It might be weird for an English Native speaker to listen to a not "pure standard" tyoe of English accent. I guess he is the product of globalization and a megamix... Him suddenly debuting as a solo singing/rapping in Cantonese... would be weird as f k no? English makea sense to reach an international audience!! Can't exoect him to have an standard accent, if you aren't native.. Let' just say he has a British-Cantonese type of accent. It's not your Essex accent, and it's not your other british colonies type of accent but a Hong Kong British accent😊

I don't think it was a mistake to remove him - a huge cheating and gaslighting scandal like his would factually have tarnished the reputation and hindered the future success of WayV (especially within the Chinese market), but also NCT in general. I do think it was a mistake to redebut him as a soloist though, this song could've been better had another NCT member done it, like Taeyong as you mentioned. It does feel wrong to me that he's the 3rd NCT member (well, former, but you get the point) to debut as a soloist over all of the other exceptional talent within NCT who are pretty objectively more deserving. Like, he only debuted in 2018 and is already getting his own solo release and promotions... compared to members who've been active since 2016 (or earlier, SM Rookies) and have way more stage presence, skills/talent and passion. It doesn't sit right with me or a lot of others for that reason alone.

@@tiffanyj3030 Well no, I generally tend not to like or support abusers in any capacity lmfao. Even when he was in WayV he was my least favourite member because I never really felt like he added anything to the group - since there are already multiple better rappers and dancers, and his looks have never really appealed to me. Much like his addition to SuperM over the numerous other NCT members that would've actually contributed more to the actual music and performances, it baffles me that SM consistently give him more projects/opportunities/promotions than the other, more deserving members.

This is honestly getting hilarious lmao, the amount of people who are currently making uneducated decisions just because some ‘stalker chick’ decided to ruin his career as well as his life is beyond me. I don’t know how people are willing to hate someone, just because of baseless rumours ( there has been neither proof on either sides). I absolutely understand if you’re on a neutral opinion, but to down right hate someone baffles me.

I feel like the documentary was to clear up everything because of the fact that the past still plays a big role in his life because of how many people dislike him now & don't believe him, yes he cares about the haters but now he's showing them he's a new person and how anything else that happens after this will no longer affect him as much like it use to. I hope he realizes how much fans he still has a becomes a successful soloist, once a neo always a neo🙏🏽

I feel like this song actually has a lot of potential like the music itself is actually rlly good and would def go crazy live but the fact that it’s all in English took away from it a lot😭 bc I was thinking the same thing like he got 50 different accents going on in the same sentence and it just doesn’t rlly work and that’s not his fault I mean English ain’t his first language but yk rapping is about the flow and alliteration and diction. It matters how words leave your mouth when you rap and how they flow with the song and it just didn’t do it for me personally. Also the message of the song is confusing bc #1 like u said it’s hard to believe this whole “Idgaf what the haters say I’m so cool” thing when he made a whole ass documentary showing everyone exactly how much of af he gave and how it affected him💀 and #2 he left the group but he’s still in the same company so it’s just kinda silly to act like “everyone tried to hold me down and I don’t need them” or wtv when ur still with the same ppl that kicked u out the group that you’ve been in for years😭 also him turning into a mouse and dancing on the table had me DEAD

The whole i dont give af what they say is also part of the mental provess after 2 years in hiatus. And it is also sth that his fans appreciate because they have also been battling in social media against hundreds of thousands of comments and lies, i think fans are loving to sing certain lines to get out their f k n frustration at all those haters
