I absolutely loved Disney/Pixar's LUCA and today I wanna discuss why I, and hopefully you too, had such an emotional response to it. Whether it was the perfect vibes, or the beautiful themes and takeaways, I wanna look at why Luca is indeed so damn special.

I think this is a great film, and even though it wasn't intentional in terms of the LGBT metaphors, I think it gets across multiple messages. And it doesn't have to be a direct metaphor that has to scream it in your face. The beautiful thing about art is that everyone will interpret it differently, and Luca does that really well. If you see the movie as a metaphor about coming out, then that's how you perceive it! Nothing is stopping you from doing that and nothing is stopping someone else from taking away a different message. Art is always going to be seen differently. Overall, Luca is an incredibly sweet and wholesome film and certainly is about friendships and acceptance.

SPOILERS FOR: LUCA (2021) and RATATOUILLE (2007) I really enjoyed Luca and I put it in the same league as Ratatouille because they have some similar elements and tackle similar themes: 1. Both are slice-of-life type films where it's more about characters just living their lives rather than being hyper-focused on a goal. Of course, in both films, the protagonists have clear and defined goals. Ratatouille's Remy dreams of becoming a chef in a legitimate restaurant. Luca's Alberto and Luca want to win the Portorosso Race (a reference to Porco Rosso perhaps?) in order to win the prize money to afford a Vespa. However, these are not necessarily the end-goal for either film's characters. Remy does not want to be a chef for the sake of becoming a chef, but because he is passionate about cooking and wants a place where he can exercise that passion. And most of Ratatouille is spent just with Remy cooking and learning the ways of a professional restaurant, Anton Ego doesn't really come until later. Alberto and Luca don't want a Vespa for its own sake either, but they want one as a way for them to be able to be free and travel the world. In the middle of the film, Luca doesn't even really want the Vespa anymore, he wants to go with Giulia to her school so he can see new places and meet new people. 2. Both films tackle the theme of Identity and discovering oneself by stepping outside of the world they've always known. Remy knows he'll never be able to fit into his father's expectations. And Luca knows that his curiosity is too great to simply forget about the surface. Both of them step outside of their homeworld and into the human world. For Remy, this means working on a real kitchen and learning the ropes of how an actual restaurant is run. It's not enough that he's got the heart and talent as a cook, he must also have the discipline of being a chef. For Luca, it is a literal walking into the human world and seeing that humans are actually really fascinating and that he is free to be whoever he wants to be. 3. Both protagonists from each film meet a friend that introduces them to the world and provides them with enough access that they get to fulfill their dreams, but they themselves aren't much of an expert. In Ratatouille, Linguini is there to be Remy's vehicle into becoming an actual cook in a real kitchen since Linguini is human and therefore can navigate the human culture. But Linguini himself is not an expert when it comes to the restaurant business. Alberto knows more about humans than Luca does but only by a little bit. 4. Both films have female characters that are intensely competitive. Ratatouille's Colette is the only female cook in the restaurant so she's quite intense to the two protagonists because she wants to prove that she is deserving to be in that kitchen just as much as all the other cooks are. But as the film progresses, she becomes less intense. Luca's Giulia wants to win the Portorosso Race not just because it would be cool, but because she wants to prove that she can beat Ercole. 5. Both films have antagonists that are desperate for acclaim and glory. Ratatouille's Skinner wants to make a franchise out of Gusteau's Restaurant and achieve fame and riches. Ercole keeps on joining the race despite being too old because he is sure he can beat kids that are younger than him. But if he ever is in competition with people at his level, he is sure to lose. 6. Both films have a character that is prejudiced at first but soon learns to open their minds. In Ratatouille, Anton Ego has a very narrow view of what makes a good restaurant experience. But when he eats food cooked by Remy, his opinion on Fine Dining changes to the point where he is also changed as a person. In Luca Massimo (Giulia's father) wants to kill sea monsters but towards the end, he realizes that these "monsters" aren't monsters at all and stand up for them when they needed them. 7. Both films are set in European countries known for their cuisine. That's all. Sorry for the lengthy post, it's midnight where I'm from and I couldn't sleep. A nice glass of milk might help me.

I loved the movie, but found myself to be extremely sad and bothered that Disney/Pixar keep gaybaiting their audience and only having the guts to recount a gay acceptance story through metaphors. It's unacceptable that in 2021 big media corporations refuse to take a stand against homophobia...

Pixar has always, ALWAYS done stories that everyone can relate to. I don't think this movie ever set out to be an LGBT story, it's just that people immediately thought it'd be exactly that (including me) because of 'call me by your name' They are under no obligation to make a movie that targets a very specific demographic, they always make their movies in ways you can find personal meaning. To you and many others, it may be an allegory to coming out. To me, this movie reflected the idea of the sides of you that YOU hide and the lack of support you may receive from your family and the world around you.. Be it your hobbies, your interests in what you may do for work, the type of person you fall in love with, etc. That's the beautiful thing about Pixar. Just like kids can get one thing from it and adults can take their deeper meaning, you can take this as an LGBT story and I can take it as a tale of acceptance, most importantly: the idea that everywhere you go, there will be people who accept you and people who don't and it's up to you to find those who will embrace who you are and make you happy.
