What Makes WHIPLASH Great?
Фильм және анимация
In honour of my own short film, I thought it would be fun to look at Damien Chazelle's 2013 short film, Whiplash, and what makes a great idea?

How about a video on BARRY, Bill Hader's amazing dark comedy series on HBO?
I already said this on twitter but still, big congrats on the short film. It’s super inspiring from the perspective of myself. Hope all goes well!
Congratulations on being accepted into the festival! I look forward to seeing it. Always enjoy your breakdowns and look forward to seeing something you've built up on your own. Sending positive vibes your way!
Very pleased for you and your work on your debut film! Can't wait to check it out!
Quick warning. You usually have to buy the “collection” of films in the lift off festival. Doesn’t cost too much but they don’t make it clear when you enter. Good luck dude

Personally, the short WAS what I was expecting. A functional, miniscule version of the film but I'm yes i get the point: It's indeed inspirational to see how a great idea can be executed in such small scale. But my point is, it wasn't exactly so amateur-ish for a short. It did have incredible staging, editing and direction. I'm glad it was such an eye opener for you. Pumped for your short!
Good luck with the short film! I don’t have any money to give, but I wish you the best.
Damien Chazelle is amazing, can’t wait for Babylon!

Congratulations for the movie!
this made me appreciate how visually stunning the full length film was. holy cow
Immediately went to watch the short. It's execution imo felt a bit rough around the edges but still pretty good. Fletcher's psychological terror for me didn't feel as sharp as in the full length feature. It was still terrifying but the editing was simpler, not as quick or nervous as it's successor's.

Everyone, The Traveler is streaming now! Please, watch the film and VOTE. Number 55 on the list, or just use this link right here: vimeo.com/ondemand/liftoffsessionsjuly20205
Looking forward to the big debut. Onwards and upwards! 🤟
Brilliant video. Been working on a short film myself for the last few weeks. It's gotten very ambitious and very intimidating. This helped bring me back down to Earth and think about what matters. Best wishes with the Traveler bro !
I needed something motivating like this. Thank you Roby. Will definitely check your film out 😊
Congrats man! I've been watching your channel for quite some time. I just realized how simple short films need to be as well! I am working on a short art-house western that I feel really, really, really good about. I think I'm going to send it to festivals whenever I finish it. Your video inspired me to keep working on it and just be simple! Also, Buddy, from the shots you have shown us I have faith that it'll be a great short. I am so proud of you for creating something in a time like this. You truly have the love of cinema in your heart and it shows, and also you have a passion to create something worthwhile. Cannot wait to see The Traveler!
Will you make a reminder video on the 19th? Would love to see it

I’ll do some posts on Twitter and stuff. Might even release a little trailer I put together for Instagram.
Good Luck man!
Really needed this video as I'm slowly trying to make the pivot into becoming a KZread content creator and hopefully make my short film if not by the end of then by the beginning of next year.

Hey, dude that is so exciting! Look, like I said in the video, the hardest part is really just jumping in and doing it. You're never gonna be perfect, so instead of worrying about that, just do something. You'll improve over time, and that's really all you can ask for.
Yes!! Finally!!!
you rock
I know it’s cliche but do you think you will ever do a video on your favorite films of the 2010s? I love hearing you thoughts.

I mean, listicle sorta videos always get views, and they’re relatively easy to put together, so... sure!
Very useful advice.
Congrats!
This is my first video from you, and I must say very good job and ill try to check out your short film. Hope you find major success someday
Back when I was in 10th grade, I was in the wrestling class. I was only approximately 120 Ibs at the time and underweight. One day early in the season, my collarbone and ribcage became misaligned. My arms horizontal movement became restricted due to the pain. I asked everyone; my coach, my teachers, my parents to help me see a Chiropractor. No one took me seriously. Because of this injury which I was forced to wrestle with or fail the class, I never won a single match. I felt absolutely devastated. I refuse to see this movie because I am afraid of reliving my own trauma. It’s because of this trauma I fail to understand how so many people including Chris Stuckmann can praise a work like this, and because I fail to understand I feel weak, incompetent, and outcast. Sometimes I feel like all the critics are begging me to see it else I’m missing out on something great; the performance of a lifetime. Is it okay to feel deathly afraid of a film such as this?

It's a great film but no, you don't have to see it. The teacher is hella abusive and that sounds like it wouldn't be good for you to experience. You can catch glimpses of the high levels of style and acting from this review, and not go on to watch the short or feature.
I saw the whiplash short film
How did you get actors for a short film during the pandemic? My biggest problem trying to make a short film is trying to get actors.
Hello I would like to purchase one of your Three Billboards posters
Make something regarding the work of David F Sandberg maybe?
Loved this!!

I was super lucky in the sense that my lead was also a talented musician. So, for me, I just asked him to do it. I would just ask around, you'd be surprised to know that there are _heaps_ of aspiring composers out there.

I know that this is the top comment, but I couldn't resist. "Day-boo" :)
I really get your point from a moviemaker standpoint But me being a professional drummer just makes me not able to watch whiplash without noticing how far away from reality everything is and it takes me that much out of the story to a point where any great moviemaking stops to matter to me, the whole thing is just too cringeworthy. The drum setup alone gives away that Chazelle hasn‘t done his research to a point where it really bothers me to watch this at all

I really don't see the appeal with Chazelle. It's predictable, it lacks thought provoking depth. It's pretty much what you see is what you get.
