Okay, this video gave me a much better understanding on how to listen on 3D 7.1 surround headphones. They all sound somewhat different but it doesn't trick my mind into thinking it's really behind me (even harder when it's in front of me). Now that I have a better understanding I can train myself to know which direction "virtual" sound comes from.

Testing this on Nura headphones. All I can say is Holy Fuck!!! Never heard anything so real, it's like the sound coming from inside my head.

Now can organize enemy's location perfectly

That's because most of these 3D sound demos are just cheap "Virtual Surround Sound" that squish a 7.1 signal down to stereo. True 3D sound requires software that can actually read the X, Y, and Z co-ordinates between listeners and sound sources. This is obviously impossible with pre-recorded movie soundtracks, but PC gaming has taken great strides in making this tech more available in the last 5 years.

But that's supposed to be the whole point with demos like this--binaural sound via headphones has to be two-channel, algorithmically processed to sound three-dimensional. Even the best can't provide a convincing front stage.

@@morphentropic I only heard a scratching sound on the recording you linked to -- mainly at low volume in my left earphone, but a brief quieter scratching in my right earphone. Not at all impressive. However, I recently got an Oculus and have now experienced a convincing 3D sound field from two transducers. So it can be done.
