LS POWER SECRETS! CAM, SPRINGS & BOOST

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

FULL BOOSTED RESULTS. BIG POWER, JUNKYARD TURBO LS. Just add a good cam, decent springs and then boost. The trick is to make sure you have enough fuel, the right fuel and proper intercooling. Little things make a big difference. Of course you need to choose the right turbo sizing.

My understanding is that ring gap is a free "mod" you can do so you dont trash your pistons. Cuz that's expensive. It will burn a very little amount of oil but not enough to matter due to blowby is my understanding. It's a trade-off that is worth it.

My money is on boost. 10 pounds will nearly double the output of a motor. On the other hand, even minor increases in compression can have pretty dramatic effects on power. Richard's video on 706 heads (higher compression) vs 317 heads (more airflow) is a perfect example. The 706 heads made more power all the way across the board.

Kimbal Mackinnon the engine with more compression will spool quicker. Both motors will be capable of the same power with everything else being equal. With the exact test you mentioned the 9:1 on 20psi engine will make more power, but who cares because the other engine can make the power quicker and can still make the same top end

First , Richard I enjoy all the content that you have been putting out. Great stuff. Love killing the myths! Lol. Now for my question. I understand that the cam is the brains of the motor but the supporting stuff is important as well. So here’s the combo I’m attempting. 5.3 , 706 heads , truck intake. 4L60e. And it’s in a truck. I daily drive and tow once a month. Years ago you did a test on a camel that made power and torque everywhere in the curve over the stock cam. I can’t find that test. Second. I may have to remove my 706 heads as possible coolant leak in casting. What do I replace them with? Another set of 706 ? Not looking to rotate the earth just a healthy daily driver Your thoughts. One problem wt the computer is it’s much like on line learning. It’s only presented one way and no questions. I’ve noticed you seem to answer questions. Thanks again for your efforts.

Richard, the Summit 8720 218 outperforming the SS2 is pretty impactful to people who default to a 23x cam choice. I’d really like to see you fill in the gap between the 8720 and a BTR torque cam. Please see if you can get Summit to give you a 209/217 high lift truck cam. If that performs great down low while giving strong HP like the 8720, it could be perfect for a 4.8l street/strip motor - not race, but partial throttle would be great.

Boost curve? Back pressure curve? Timing? As someone else noted, it didn’t follow the boost power formula... Still, love this channel! That Summit stage 1 cam is amazing! Comment on CR: I think you said once the JE pistons had a 7cc dome. If true, that’s almost a full point of compression, 10.4 vs 9.5. On a 400 hp combo, that should be worth 15 hp or so NA. That makes a difference. I also vote for the meth injection camparo, 91 octane and say 15 psi compared to E85 (which is nice but hard to get day-to-day). Maybe move the meth injector farther away from the throttle body to perhaps get better distribution? You’ll have work for another decade, I think!

Lines don’t get any bigger then stock. You’ll need to up the pressure. Pumps aren’t to costly. Many KZread videos on the subject. My upgraded system cost so much just because of the unnecessary AN fittings and lines upgrades I made. Otherwise, pump, regular, injectors, line filters. In my case did cost more then an eBay turbo for sure. Cheers

Richard, Can you do a test where you use different size pipes from the turbo to the intake? I'm space limited, and can basically only use 2.5" piping. Would I benefit by trying to fit 3 or 3.5".

Good video and excellent explanation of what's needed to easily pull power from a stock LS. I know that this is a rookie question but would you recommend getting an engine from summit racing or jegs if a person did not have the necessary knowledge, space, tools, or finances to get an engine from a junkyard to rebuild? Thanks

I mean witch setup can make Turbo Ls responsive, Low Lag "Creating Boost Early" and at the and time with Low Back Pressure. Small Turbo Size "68MM" related to Ls Capacities 4.8,5.3 6.0 . There is a lot of guys drifting with Turbo Ls. If you make it in Happy Hour and Horse Power Talk, you gonna be best of the best. Good Luck and keep forward.

Varies between about 55% and 75%, generally. Yes, it makes a difference but not a giant one. Best to use a flex fuel sensor that detects the percentage real time, but if you tune for ~11:5:1 AFR with E85, you won't break your engine with seasonal fluctuations in alcohol percentage at the pump.

Richard, your videos are awesome. Thank you for the info. I do have a couple requests. Spark plugs - tell us what do you run and why. If I call NGK they tell me to run the newest iridium plugs, my tuner says use a copper recessed. Also exhaust. Recirculated waste gate vs open dump. AND the big question for turbo setup I have is exhaust. What is the best street friendly setup to run? Can a turbo setup make good power with catalytic converters ( I have a 3" down pipe to dual 2.5 all the way back)? Or run test pipes between emissions tests? I have a 98 s10 4.3 V6 with a 62/68 t4 borg warner. Trying to get it dialed in. Having some issues with cut out when boost peaks at 4,00 rpm. Thanks you Jim.

we use Denso or NGK plugs-heat range 9 or so for boost-we run the WG open to atmosphere, power will be down with a restrictive exhaust, but it can work

  • @GroovesAndLands

I like heat range 7 or 8. A catalyst and/or quiet mufflers will certainly cut power substantially - but who cares? 450, 550, 650hp is plenty. Don't get hung up on making some specific number. Ultimately you're trying to add a bunch of performance, right? Well, that can be done quietly and with emissions compliance if you care to.

What kind of fuel pump with decapped 80# or those snake eaters? I'm sure my stock s-10 blazer 4.3 pump is insufficient. I'm building an 03 Xtreme street Blazer. Stock 4.3 v6. Pretty sure I I got 4.8 even though the guy told me it was 5.3. It has flat tops. Very clean . Supposed to be 104k on the clock. I've bought a sloppy stage 2 and sloppy springs. lol I'm using Terminator max 4l60e with a 3000 stall. I have an 80e but thought I would eat the 60e first. It was behind a 4.3 and seems strong still. Just now starting to think about boost. I got 706 heads but after seeing your videos about ring gap and the small but great combustion chambers I may run a cheap GT45 with 8.5 # lol. Really 500 rear hp would be just fine. I'd like to street drive it. The rear end is probably a huge weak point as well. I have a 67 Mustang coupe resto mod I want to do something with as well it is kinda weak. Looks great though. Fords are just a pain though.

It's easy to find the torque curves. They cross the corresponding power curve at about 5353 rpm. Even without color coding, this would be the case. PS: the torque curve will be lower than the power curve after 5353, and higher than it below 5353 rpm.

"If you're gonna upgrade the cam. You need to upgrade the springs" May I suggest upgrade the rockers to a roller tip. I couldn't find out why I wiped out the trunnion upgrade. I had plenty of oil... I talked to Kenny Duttweiller and he said the stock rockers cannot handle anything over .600 lift. The arc of the rocker was designed for .550- .565 at most....

Considering what you've said before, what do you think was holding it back? What should have been done differently to get magic turbo formula results?
