Hey Ripp, should I attempt to Power Clean from watching a how to video alone? I ve never attempted one, I had a Starting Strength Coach a year ago however, we never got to the Power Clean training. He ran out of room and I was dropped to online coaching.

If you start light, you should be fine. It’s a power clean, not a circus act where you catch the bar in your teeth 🦷

Your comment epitomizes why power cleans should be minimized unless specified. You can learn how to do front squats, split squats, and lunges with barbell way easier than a technical lift.

@@a-a-rondavis9438 You completely misunderstand what the purpose of the power clean is - it’s an explosive lift to ensure rapid power isn’t ignored in the program and the quad development exercises you mention don’t demand explosive power at all. Why waste time on a front squat or split squat when you are already hitting PRs on a back squat three times a week? Power cleans are no more challenging than a front squat for most novices in my experience. The rack position is still tough and there is no explosive pull elsewhere in the program. You don’t understand the SS program... certainly not enough to talk smack and list a bunch of needless quad exercises. You want to Crossfit or bodybuild? Go at it. This is strength. Cya.

I gained 8 inches on my vertical just doing plyo and never did squats or deadlifts. I had freinds that gained +10 inches. Look at the olympic high jumpers they skinny af and they have the highest verticals in the world only doing plyometrics

Why is it foolish ? Im 66 years old novice weakling moving along and can do lots of vertical jumps to be safe i just do 15 inches 2 X 24 thinking of adding weight .. also for some reason i dont want anything to do with the clean.

It’s a waste of time. The power clean is explosive power development. Is functionally similar to a box Jump but you can work up in weight where the box Jump becomes very hard on the knees once you’ve added 90 pounds to your bodyweight.

Do front squats instead. Even professional Strongmen and professional dunkers agree that it has one of the most bang for buck transfers to athleticism of any exercise.

@@a-a-rondavis9438 front squats aren’t explosive, and are merely doubling up the back squat. It’s a waste of time unless you don’t understand programming and exercise selection and goals in training. Front squats are great but the people doing them aren’t replacing a back squat.

Power cleans are the best trap builders. You will also look good doing them in the gym instead of doing barbell shrugs like an idiot.

Power cleans require technique drills. You'd be WAY better off doing box jumps, weighted box jumps, split squats, lunges with barbell, and especially front squats. There, saved you so much wasted time, joint pain, and investment. You could literally just do split squats and front squats and be fine. Everybody has a genetic ceiling, but you can always be athletic. Make sure you don't have a pelvic tilt first due to sedentary lifestyle. That will sap your potential because you can't transfer force efficiently. I had a 34 in vert with bad APT and no specific vert training. Imagine if I had trained with correct anatomical positions and trained specifically for vertical jump and explosion.
