Low Cost Air Shocks - still holding up after a year ???

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Update to the low cost air shock video from last year...starting to get questions on if they are holding up so here's a video of their status.
Also added a link to the latest video where I finally changed these out...turns out that they only made it about 2 years before they went bad (although they were still holding air). The latest video shows them going down the road with a camera under the car and after looking at the video I realized that something was wrong with the Driver side one.

Hey man ! Thanks 👍. Yep, most of the videos on the channel are on specific things so they don’t get many views…as long as they help folks though that’s ok. It’s actually funny you asked on how they are doing now…a shock company asked me to do some installation videos for their shocks and while I was at it, did a comparison video of these to theirs. Turns out that these eBay ones couldn’t take the abuse I put them through hauling heavy loads and one of the shocks was no longer lifting (the bag slid down on the shock tube). These would probably do fine if heavy loads weren’t put on them, but several overloaded hauls of gravel killed them, lol. Here’s the link to the video I just did a few weeks ago that shows what the design flaw is: kzread.info/dash/bejne/h6Flm66Mka67oqg.html . Thanks again and all the best ! Steve

What exhaust do you have on that? I didn't hear it start in the first video, but I like the mellow tone?!?

Hey man ! Actually it looks to be the factory exhaust that was put on this one, but I’ve had several folks around town and while on road trips ask if it has a different exhaust as it sounds so much different that most Escalades like you said. It may have been an option that the original buyer got (I bought it used a few years back) as it has really big exhaust piping compared to most exhaust systems I’ve seen for just a V8. Maybe they did something different for the 2008 ESV model with the 6.2 liter...it might be something off a GM truck that fit since it is the extended version...you never know with GM, lol. All the best ! Steve

Under load your shocks do not return the hitch to the mark you made on your framing square. If the shocks can't raise the empty trailer to the non load level then the system is inadequate for its purpose. What would happen with a loaded trailer? I suspect that the internal diameter of the replacement shocks are less than OEM shocks.

Hey man ! That’s a good observation…I actually just changed these out about a month ago as a company saw the first video I did on these and wanted me to do a couple of install videos for their product. While I had the opportunity, I did a side by side comparison of theirs to these Low Cost eBay ones in a separate video, and I put a second camera under the Escalade to see how they were doing gong down the road. Turns out that the driver side one couldn’t take the loaded trailer abuse after all (somewhere around the time of this “one year later” video I had been hauling loads of gravel to redo my gravel drive and really gave them a workout). Once I saw the video of these responding under the car, I realized that the air bag center tube had actually been pushed down and the bag was no longer curling inward to provide any lift. In comparing the two (these to the other company’s ones), these were not designed with a boss to keep the bag tube from sliding down if heavily loaded. I’m glad you mentioned this as I need to add a link to this video that will take folks to the recent one so they can see what went wrong with it. For reference, here’s a link to the comparison one that shows the design flaw: Low Cost (Cheap) Ebay Air Shocks vs. Vigor Air Shocks for the GM SUV's (+ Slow Mo under vehicle) kzread.info/dash/bejne/h6Flm66Mka67oqg.html . If folks installed these low cost ones, but never really used the SUV to haul heavy stuff like loaded trailers, I’d say they would do fine, but they definitely didn’t take the workout I put my vehicles through (around here, they might be pretty, but they still have to earn their keep, lol). Thanks again and all the best ! Steve

Are the front shocks air ride as well? Or just the rears? Thanks

  • @StevesDIYs

Hello, on mine (Z55 suspension I believe), it has air ride on the rear and the magnetic damping on the front. I also replaced the fronts with standard heavy duty gas shocks as I didn’t like how the magnetic ones handled when I was pulling my trailer when it was loaded fairly heavy. Hope this helps and all the best ! Steve

isael victorio , hello...if the truck was not loaded with people or hauling my trailer or boat, it rode about the same when they were blown out, but with weight in the back it rides much better when they are working. They level the back of the vehicle up so the ride is smoother and the handling is much better when loaded down with 6 people or a trailer.

A Gaines , hello and thanks for mentioning this...the links to the ones I bought are over in the comments of the original install video, but I didn’t add them here as well...sorry about that. Here’s the link to the original install video for reference on how to fix the tube seals as they did not match to the OE orings: kzread.info/dash/bejne/p4Zr0teQacXRmM4.html . Also, here’s the link to the ones I bought as KZread doesn’t allow pictures to be embedded in the comments: facebook.com/109400450606405/posts/156017219278061/ . They are sold by many different sellers and websites so I didn’t want to give a specific seller’s info in the video as I didn’t think that would be fair to advertise for one specific company. Thanks for the comment 👍. All the best, Steve

Hello, no, I don’t get any codes with these aftermarket ones (the bad ones that were on it that I replaced weren’t throwing codes either and they wouldn’t even pump up, lol. I replaced the front electronic struts with standard ones, but for that, had to put a resistor in place of the sensor on the strut to keep it from throwing codes. There’s another video in the channel for the front strut conversion with the resistor. All the best ! Steve

You ever change the front struts?

  • @StevesDIYs

    @StevesDIYs

    2 жыл бұрын

Hey again ! Yep, mine had the electronic struts up front, but they were real jittery when hitting pot holes and things at higher speeds so I did swap them out to heavy duty regular struts 👍. The ride is sooooo much better getting rid of the electronic ones IMO, but you have to trick the electronics so you don’t get error codes on the dash. Here’s a link to the video on the channel where I put a resistors in line to trick the computer…it’s also been several years and these are holding up great with no error codes. kzread.info/dash/bejne/jJtpqaizYNmydNo.html

@@quantrataylor7133 hey man ! Seems mine took a short drive to balance out after the original install. I’m not sure if the compressor allows air to flow between the two air bags once a load is put on them to level the vehicle out from side to side, but that might be a possibility. Sorry I couldn’t be much help, but hopefully it will level out like mine did. All the best, Steve

@@quantrataylor7133 👍. They actually did do pretty good until I overloaded my 24’ trailer with waaaay to much gravel and the bags couldn’t take the tongue load, lol. It pushed one of the bags down on the shock so it wasn’t doing much anymore on that side. They still held air and supported lighter loads, but wouldn’t pick up heavy trailer loads anymore.
