@@don-music Fami was fast and furious for most of the songs. I didn't really follow her note by note due to too many things going on at the same time and my hearing was overwhelmed!! I think Asami's high pitch voice was just too powerful and blew my hearing away haha! Almost caught Haruna's drum stick she threw at my direction at the end of show. Just inches away and the lucky dude in front of me snagged it!

Of course Fami fits the Lovebites direction, and let me tell you why! She’s the perfect fit because the 4 members of Lovebites think she’s the perfect fit. Whatever musical direction or evolution they go through is their choice. It’s their band. You can’t tell me that Miyako, Haruna, Midori and Asami didn’t do some intense soul searching before coming to their decision. If you saw the bassist audition documentary you’ll know that it wasn’t just bass chops that mattered. Asami said that when Fami walked into the room the air began to sparkle. They had lost confidence in themselves as a band and Fami reminded them that they were supposed to be having fun, or what was the point of playing music.. and THAT, was the most important thing. If someone on your patreon ever requests Stand & Deliver, you’ll see just how revitalised and fun they really are… and that is exactly why Fami is the absolute perfect fit 😊

The intro and outro are part of the song and were put there by Asami. Asami wrote this specifically to showcase the new bassist. The bass demos were even recorded before FAMI even joined by Miyako so FAMI has had 0 input outside of a few minor changes on any Lovebites songs for now. What a lot of people don't know is her dad is a huge metal head and loves the classics. She grew up on heavy metal so I doubt she's going to do much different in her own writing compared to Miho. One of the major reasons why she did a lot of jazz/funk/pop on her personal channel is that is what really could show off her skills. She was seriously thinking of quitting music altogether when she heard about the audition since she was tired of playing alone and only doing jazz/funk/pop.

@@ChadTheDragonLord Her ending her hiatus on her own channel after a year simply because she joined Lovebites speaks to how she felt about being solo at least. She's not done with jazz/funk/pop but I hope it's not going to influence her too much when it comes to Lovebites like she keeps talking about. We'll have to wait and see how the next album/EP comes out first though to see if her personal playing history seeps into Lovebites since all we've had from her is talk.

The final scene of Judgment Day's music video. I heard a few other American and European reactors say, "Isn't this scene unnecessary?" But I love this last scene. I think there are many Japanese people who take this positively. Somehow, I feel that the storyline of this music video meshes well with Japanese values and aesthetics. For example, in American comics and anime, stories with happy endings and good and evil are overwhelmingly preferred. However, in Japanese Manga, there are many stories that end with the absurdities and problems of reality. Perhaps the message the writers of this music video had in mind was: “There is good and evil all around us. Sometimes it is important to stand firm and powerful against evil. But this battle of ours will not end once, it will repeat itself again and again. ” ---------- from Nippon *It is a sentence using Google translation. I hope I conveyed my intentions correctly.

The black/bad ones lay shattered on the ground. She could just have walked away, even if the evil will come back some day. There is also another reason for it all. They wanted to show off Fami. So, she got to start and end the video.

One thing you have to consider is that we haven't yet heard a song that was written with Fami's bass talents in mind. The album was written and mostly recorded before Fami was even selected as the new bassist. She had a little bit of leeway to re-record bass parts with her input, but there wasn't a ton of room to do that. Their NEXT album will be the one composed with her skills in mind. As for their direction, they have always been multidirectional. Most reactors never really see that, unless they sit down and listen to the entire albums, because they only react to certain songs. But their music has always taken multiple paths.

David has done lots of LB material and is an astute musician. I'm sure he is aware of these things. Many different songs on JD but all fast and hard. Motorheadish, Iron Maidenish, and neo classical. You listen back to Glory to the World EP you can kinda see this sonic path. No Time to Hesitate and Paranoia come to mind.

I have no doubt that Fami is a perfect fit. I base my belief not only on her work on the new album but, more importantly, on her audition work with the band. I purchased the Judgment Day cd that included the audition Blu-Ray. Included are the three songs she performed with the band in studio as part of the audition process - The Hammer of Wrath, Golden Destination and Shadowmaker. The first two of these are Miho compositions. The bass is very up front in the mix which is likely how the band wanted it to sound when they listened to it afterward. Fami got the job not because she did anything different on these songs, but because she sounded just like Miho. Fami had practiced so much prior to the final round, especially in her three finger playing, that the band was convinced she could play all of the old material at Miho's high level. As far as this song, the decision about the outro was all Asami. Even though it is a Asami/Mao composition, this song is pure Asami. The outro perfectly fits the story wanted to tell with her lyrics, as did the entire video. There is no single judgement day in anyone's life. The decisions we make in life come one after another. The outro conveys that never-ending cycle and does so very well. This song is all Asami, from the music to the lyrics to the message.

@@ChadTheDragonLord It was my interpretation when I first saw the music video but I also think Asami has said something similar. I believe that Asami was very involved with the music video and how it conveys several themes of the song. I have heard other reactors be dismissive of the outro but I think it is very important. Especially the way it shows the story resetting and Asami back in the forest running again from the darkness. Many reactors think the music video is starting over which is exactly the point. I also really enjoy the pieces of broken glass with the reflections of each band member in their dark cloaks. A person can defeat the darkness but can never kill it.

In your debate of the bass intro you forgot one thing: To introduce and highlight the new bass player to the fans at first. Thier first two MVs, this and "Stand an Deliver" begin with a bass intro. The 10 songs of the CD "Judgement Day" are recorded before the selection of Fami. Miyako plays the bass in this recordings. After her selection, Fami had some time (2 weeks ?) to add her own lines.

David Heretic's opinions and integrity are generally highly respected and deservedly so, but like everyone else, David has his preferences and tastes (e.g., Many love to go and watch the "stage presence" in classical music performances or watch five atypical, elite-level, all-female Japanese musicians who play heavy metal for two-plus hours ... elegantly dressed in heels), On scoring, if you use a different standard like, "How many other bands out there, Japanese or otherwise, can replicate this song, Asami's vocals included"? This alone speaks to why almost every other musically-competent reviewers/reactors I've watched considers Judgement Day a near-perfect song and a leading candidate for Album of the Year. On "leveling up", Miyako mentioned she worked on her speed during the hiatus, but who really wants Miyako to "level up", match or duplicate Midori's speed and style? Who wants M&M to "level-up" in Break the Wall, Thunder Vengeance, Above the Black Sea, or Stand and Deliver (shoot 'em Down)? As a dedicated multi-instrumentalist and composer with hard-to-match skill sets (by anyone) who seems committed to constantly raising her game, Miyako's style and persona contrasted with those of Midori is among LOVEBITE's anticipated secret sauce. I often hear the comment about "synth" and backing tracks in LOVEBITES songs used pejoratively, especially by "purists". Their use of synth is not about them hiding deficiencies in their compositions and performance, or about simply sampling other people's music. To the contrary, Miyako plays their synth and backing tracks even when composition is attributed to Mao. To be able to effectively add "synth" that complements a song actually reflects their expanded musicianship repertoire - that of composing additional complementary layers in the same vein as classical music and other accomplished composers. There are several examples of this on KZread and Instagram where Miyako is playing the piano or synth, or miming (orchestra style in live feeds of the Judgement Day album) to their songs (e.g. Rising, Wicked Witch, Lost in the Garden, and Soldier Stands Solitarily). Furthermore, Miyako mentioned in an interview, as a composer herself, that her dream is to have several of LOVEBITES songs played by an orchestra ... a wish even Metallica themselves had when they teamed up with the San Francisco Symphony orchestra (Her comment here: www.reddit.com/r/Lovebites/comments/8rez2u/something_i_noticed_in_above_the_black_sea. )

Judgement Day is the fourth studio album by Japanese Heavy Metal band LOVEBITES. It was released in Japan on February 22, 2023 by Victor entertainment, and in the UK two days later by JPU Records. It is the band’s first release with Fami, who joined in October 2022 as the replacement for bassist, composer and co-founder Miho Rosana, Judgement Day reached number 5 on both the Oricon and Billboard Japan charts, making it the band’s highest-charting record to date. Like all of their releases, it was mixed by Mikko Karmila and mastered by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios in Helsinki, Finland My favorite song of the album is “Soldier Stands Solitarily”. was originally written for Glory, Glory to the World, but did not make the Final Cut, so Miyako rearranged it for this album. 🎸🔥🎸🔥🤟

8.8 is a great score, for those who might complain. Personally, I'd rate it a fair bit higher as it's one of my favorite Lovebites songs, although I tend to agree with you regarding the ending. During lockdown, Miyako took guitar lessons from Midori with the intention of increasing her speed ability. It definitely worked, and it shows what a tight and solid guitar unit they are. Midori now takes part in muscle bikini competitions, so you can imagine the level of dedication that takes. As for the bass... these songs were written and recorded before they even had a bass player. Miyako recorded guide bass parts, then Fami learned the songs and recorded her versions of them within three weeks. The true value of Fami will only be revealed in time. She's 20 years old, and technically excellent, and the band has chosen her because they don't want Miho 2.0. Fami will challenge them to move forward, and it's going to be interesting to see what they produce in the future. There's a VOD bundle available to purchase with the CD, which comes with a 37 minute documentary of the bassist auditions, along with Fami's three audition songs in full as well as the full version of Bravehearted that they played for the announcement video. It's clear from those performances that she fits the band VERY well, and the band were very certain of that in the interviews. I'm excited to see what they do in the future with Fami on board.

The direction is the bottom line. This is my speculation. Lovebites was going to the different direction from Miho wanted. Then they had to find a new bassist. You'll know what I mean when you listen to the whole album of Judgement Day. It is not a question if Fami fits Lovebites. It's that Lovebites chose Fami from hundreds of bassists. They needed a bassist fits their direction. Right pronunciation of Fami is with A of Ah. There is only one A in Japanese and all other languages except English. Fami is named after Family Mart, a Japanese convenience store franchise that she loves. Like somebody already have mentioned, Asami sang this tune on a Japanese TV show kzread.info/dash/bejne/rHWMw5qfnZOnmMo.html. Instrumental is from CD recording but vocal is, still can be pre-recorded, but without effects. Live performance will be like that.

You really can’t judge Fami yet, because all the bass lines were already laid out by Miyako for the new album before Fami joined, so she played over it, and put some accents on it. The next album we will probably see more of Fami’s influence on the band.

Excellent reaction, David. I'm going to throw this out there. I might get a lot of heat for it, and that's fine. People are saying in the comments that it's Miyako you're hearing on bass on the record.. While. obviously, I wasn't at the tracking, I say that's most definitely Fami on the bass tracks. Yes, they have said that they were in production of the album while they were auditioning bassists. And yes, Miyako laid down bass tracks at that time. But I'm saying she laid down scratch tracks and when they brought Fami in, they re-tracked the bass lines with Fami. I've made a living for over thirty years as a recording engineer, and this sort of thing happens all the time (I'm sure you've seen it too). That is Fami's style and technique. I'm convinced it's her we're hearing on the record. Other responses to the review: I follow Midori and Miyako on twitter, and they were going to each other's houses spending time outside of band rehearsal practicing together. I've always said Midori had the better technique (keeping in mind that Miyako is primarily a pianist). But now it's gotten to the point where there's virtually no difference between them in technique. Miyako has certainly leveled up her game. The Wolfpack refers to this as Lovebites 2.0. I agree. I think they are taking a new direction, as they should. New line up, improvements from all members (Midori the Terminator)....it's time. BTW, you're right. They performed this song on a Japanese variety show to promote the album and Asami sang the fifth.

I really enjoyed this review, honestly one of your best. Asami has really raised her vocal game and Miyako has learned a lot from Midori, she is self taught but now has a master for a partner. Haruna, well what is there to say, she never gets any shine time but is always perfect and never ever lets the others outshine her while keeping a lower profile. Fami is gifted and the "FIT" is a legit concern. She doesn't have a metal background (neither did Asami and we know how that went). She did vocals, and a lot of Jazz and Anime themed stuff but admitted she was looking for a band to grow her career. She is getting more attention from the band trying to welcome her, Miho never got that but didn't need it. How she effects LB remains an open issue. The new album is excellent but they just did a short few nights in Japan, likely to get Fami some adjustment time. They are back and with a new energy, the issue remains what will the new LB be with Fami in the mix, less European Metal (Miho's influence) and more something else. Miyako and Mao still do most of the compositions and Asami the lyrics but will Fami's contributions ( and she will ) change the overall direction? Issues you honestly raised while still nothing how good the band sounds. They have given Fami a lot of attention, note the intro and the outro, will that continue or does she blend in more like Miho but with her own style. A+ video from one of the best channels for an honest review even when I disagree with with you, you always have my respect.

Mr. Heretic, first off, thank you for getting to this! I know it has been on everyone's list, and that you also did the background research on Fami in your spare time, and definitely recognize her talents for who she is and what she brings to the band. It really does help with seeing where you are coming from. But I'm going to approach your comments regarding her from a different perspective: The influences of LoveBites. With Miho, you can definitely hear the classic 80s bands they were influenced by: Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Helloween, etc. And those are pretty common in nearly every song, to the point of Miho writing a Slayer type song after seeing Slayer perform at Donnington/Download festival. Now we get to this song, and where you are worried about if Fami is a fit, I'd ask you to think about the influence on this song. The bass line and flow of the song scream Yngwie Malmsteen, minus the overloaded fills he'd put into a song. His first three albums were recorded with him playing bass. That sounds prominent here not only with the entire bass line, but even in the solo and harmonizing. Midori's descending run is a Malmsteen run, and the last 8 measures of her second solo were straight out of Black Star, from Malmsteen's first album. So the influence is there, and with that, the bass is prominent but majorly in the background, which is how this was played. Fami played that part. Her talents are going to show more with the newer tracks and her influence on those tracks, so you are doing right to reserve judgment on her. I think, however, you'll lean towards her being a good fit. She has a lot to learn (she's only 20), and the band has a lot to learn from her as well, as they play tighter with her.

I believe that it simply means that they played guitar together as they have always done and learned from each other as they have always done. Miyako has always complained, rightly or wrongly, that she has lacked the speed of Midori. If Miyako's goal was to improve speed and precision, then the best way to do that would be to play with Midori as much as possible. The best guitar teacher either of them could find are each other.

To David: One Word to the Album.... there are maybe 2 or 3 songs a little different ( you also got another one of them to react from me also.....;) the rest is 100% Lovebites with Fami... :) No Band-Maid sound... no Fami special sound... Lovebites sound. Therefore i don't like this Song that much because it don't sound like Lovebites in the first place. But they tried to get new people with other tastes to buy their stuff and i find this a good thing.

A very big reason why I prefer Lovebites live to studio is the mixing. The synths are always too loud in the mix, for my taste and the guitars come sort of second. Other than that, they're back and as good if not better than ever. Miyako said in an interview somewhere that during their hiatus she practiced her speed a lot. It looks like she succeeded 😀 Thanks, David.

Miyakos solo on "Stand and deliver" did overshadow Midori too. Some nice speedruns. She even outwah Kirk Hammet!😁 They're like Dave Murray and Adrian Smith of Maiden. Midori is some crazy shredder that is easy to get impressed by the speed, while Miyako is more about tone and feel.. But she knows to shred too. And on top of it she is a concert level pianist! Edit: If Fami as new player is a better fit than Miho? From a musical standpoint, debatable.... But from a technical standpoint? Without a doubt! It gives them more variation. Love those slaps she gives. When auditioning she told she was new to the galloping Harris-style Miho was so good at, but did a good effort at it, which impressed the girls... A lot! I believe during the recording, she did do some variations around some of the pre-work Miyako had done. I believe Miyako had made some basstracks on her own, since most of the album was already recorded and only needed some Fami touch to it?

@@PaulEMoz Based on the setlists I found online, a release does indeed not seem to make much sense, unless its purpose was to introduce Fami playing live, because the only two songs performed at these shows which haven't already been released live on DVD/Bluray before were "Judgement Day" and "Stand and Deliver". I'd expect them to play more songs from the new album on their Japanese tour later this year (and hopefully also songs from their previous EP which haven't been released/played live yet) and for their fans, a live recording of one of these shows would probably be more interesting than the two concerts they just played in Tokyo. But why would they record a show, if they don't intend to release it on DVD/Bluray? It could, of course, also be included only as a bonus in a special edition of their next studio release - as it was the case with "Battle in the East" and "Live at Wacken".

Firstly thanks to the chap who made this Patreon request. As others have commented, Fami had very little input in this song and from my understanding, the whole album, as it had already been laid down. I remember commenting that I wondered if you would feel the song had been over produced and although I did not suggest, ask, demand you react to it, I assumed you would be inundated with Patreon requests and did not expect to watch your reaction/review for at least a year. Your score is higher than I thought and it seems you liked the song on all levels but were overly concerned on Fami's fit. Not that made a difference to the score. There is a video of a very abridged version of the audition process. Only going on what I viewed, there were two bassist left to choose from, in the end. The chose Fami as by all accounts the rooms atmosphere turned electric, the moment she stepped in to it. For me, it will be down to the live performances for Fami's fit into Lovebites. Will she get the deep wide stances and wave her left fist in the air, when it is not required, will she move around and make her stage presence felt? It is not an exaggeration to say Japan is awash with talented musicians and there would have been many, many technically proficient bass players auditioning for to fill Miho's shoes. The audition video shows a few. I trust Lovebites choice because the fit into the band would have been the deciding factor as opposed to any technical playing skill, that was a given. As stated earlier by me and others, this album was already written. Therefore you can not judge Fami on any studio recording from this album You yourself could have recorded the bass part at home and it could have been mixed in by those guys at Finnbox in Finland.

Great reaction! Midori didn't just hit the gym, she supposedly actually entered a bodybuilding competition, although I don't know where she placed in it. MIyako on the other hand had a baby over the hiatus, but maybe unlike the majority of us, sleep deprivation improves her performance (kind of like the old WKRP episode where Johnny Fever's reaction time improved the more he drank). As for how to pronounce "Fami", haven't heard anyone in Lovebites actually say it yet, but "Fah - mee" should generally be the standard Japanese pronunciation.

I used to do free requests, and as the channel grew the que got bigger and bigger. At one point there were 1682 requests in the que, and it was just going to keep getting bigger and bigger. So I switched to Patreon requesting just so the que wouldn't keep growing out of control. I made the price point very fair, it's only $5 to make requests. That's a lot less expensive than most of those other reaction cannels. I donate at least half of the money the channel makes to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. I keep some to cover my taxes obviously, and I save a little each month to help pay for the channels needs like software upgrades, hardware upgrades, replacement equipment, Vimeo membership, and other essentials. I'm not trying to get rich doing this channel. The goal is to use Patreon requesting to keep the number of requests manageable every month and hopefully eventually eliminate the que. Once the que has been eliminated, I will go back to doing free requests again on KZread. There will be A LOT of rules for making free requests, but at least the requests will be free. I won't go back to Patreon requesting unless I absolutely have to, in all honesty I hate charging for requests.
