Love Will Tear Us Apart - A Peter Hook Classic Bass Line!

Музыка

www.talkingbass.net/love-will...
This week we’re going to look at a classic bass line from the song Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division played by the legendary Peter Hook. This is a great bass line to play for players of any level. It’s instantly recognisable, it’s super melodic and it features a great use of open string drones to give that chordal sound. We’ll break it down and I’ll give you some tips on muting and fingering.

Mark, I'm already a member of the Talking Bass website and have bought a few of your courses, slap bass, Prelude in C, and Chord Tone Essentials. To see a bassist of your caliber covering Joy Division is the ultimate of cool. So many of the big KZread bass players thumb their nose at Peter Hook. When I asked one such KZreadr about covering Hooky his response was 'I would rather talk about someone who could play the bass'. What a dick, I was expecting no reply at all (lots of followers), yet he took the time to dis my suggestion. Thank you, now I'm your fan and student for life.

I've been a Joy Division/New Order fan for almost 40 years. Agree that he is one of the best. A different style but its HIS style. I make sure I see him with his band The Light whenever they tour.

That’s hilarious because Hooky is a bassline machine. Nearly everthything he makes is catchy and has that edge to it. You’d be lucky to write that many good basslines and songs in a lifetime.

This is the bass line that made me want to learn bass. It is not complicated at all, but my God is it beautiful. My dream is to conduct a magic ritual that will transform every bass player in the world into Peter Hook. I will sacrifice 100 Yamaha BBBs and 10 000 chorus pedals and recite the lyrics to Age of Consent backward in Latin and every bass player will become Peter Hook and the world will be a better place.

Hooky is such an incredibly driven bass players, but then I excitedly went to see his orchestra show at RAH and had my first experience of true northern fans after they had aged. Naturally I loved it having not seen Joy Division live, fabulous night out.

I learned to play this 30 or so years ago by listening to the record of it and I'm glad to see that I got it right. The only thing I do differently is I tend to add a fifth to the A drone on alternate bars during the chorus, not that I thought it was right but just to break up the monotony. I was hoping you would show the ending because I have never been sure if I play that part correctly.

Yes. In that he actually plays it different to the original and how I used to play it. Until I heard the isolated bass line I was playing the open A drone instead of the minor 3rd interval. Like Hooky does in the vid. But the original is different.

Lol. I was waiting for the trolls to come out. The video you’re referring to is the Hooky Schools Me one. That is how I actually played it until about a week ago. Then I listened to the isolated bass track. The bit you’re talking about is the B with the minor third. In the video he plays it as the B with the open A string. That isn’t how he plays it in the original. It’s very obvious to the ear (unless you don’t have any ear training, obviously). I personally think he’s going for the B on its own but he’s still holding that D down from the previous chord through dodgy technique (he hadn’t exactly been playing long). He probably used the downstrokes I mention in the lesson and the D is heard as a residual note. Whatever the reason, the way he plays it in that video is definitely not the same as the original. That minor third is definitely heard. Live it’s a totally different story. Live he plays it like in the video.

Gosh, thin skinned much? Poster just said you were playing it wrong. Don’t really consider that trolling… Anyway, you’re playing it correctly as far as I can tell, however, to my ears, you don’t really cop the vibe of the original but I suppose that comes down to using alternate picking vs downstrokes. Original is much more aggressive, your version is pretty by comparison and I don’t mean that as a diss at all.
