Yes, he deserved the win IMO, but all those actors were very very good in those roles.. In particular James Mason as the cool and scholarly opposing attorney/antagonist, and Robert Preston, who chews up the screen anytime he’s in a film..

Dayyyumm skippy!! If ever a winner for "Best Supporting Actor" gave a better performance than Louis Gossett, Jr. did in that movie, one would be VERY hard-pressed to find another performance in ANY other movie that matches it. I was sooooooo happy to know that Louis won it, not only because the role was SUPERBLY done and he richly deserved it, but because Louis is a great guy, as well. (Note: I normally don't overly gush over a performance and/or individual, but Gossett's performance was the DI was/is rarified air in the history of acting, IMO.)

Crazy that he died on my birthday. I love his performance in this movie, and other work that he did in his career - a few months ago I watched him in an episode of “Picket Fences” during a first time watch of the series - he was outstanding. Rest in peace, Mr. Gossett. “Walk around, Seeger!!!”

He definitely deserved that oscar. His performance had me close to tears by the end.
