His role as GySgt Foley in "An officer and a Gentleman" is one of the best portrayals of a Marine Corps DI. Right up there with R. Lee Ermy and Jack Webb.

I still remember watching Enemy Mine with my grandpa and seeing silent tears fall from his eyes. That helped me understand racism at a very early age and helped me overcome it, we are all one, even if we are shattered.

I remember as a kid watching Louis Gossett Jr. In The Principal and then Iron Eagle. But Officer and a gentleman is a classic. R.I.P Mr. Gossett

@@beulahokonkwo The industry as a whole. After his role in An Officer and a Gentleman, he stated he was not getting ANY call backs for any of the roles he auditioned for. You would think Hollywood would have been beating down his door, but that did not happen. Even with those awards, his talent was horrifically underutilized. I am glad they got him for the remake of The Color Purple, but I wish his role had been bigger.

The odd thing about His passing was I didn’t know he passed away. I had the movie “The Principle “ in my utube movie save. It came on after I was done watching a movie, I didn’t put it on. My friend came in the room and told me He passed away. It was so weird because of that movie starting with him in it and he just passed away. Such a Brilliant Actor! RIP sir. I remember watching Iron Eagle as a kid with my mother and almost tearing up when I thought his character had died in the movie. But that was only one of many. So many roles and always so well done. Mr. Gossett just had that style. And from the interviews you can see & hear a good man giving life lessons.

I met Lou Gossett, Jr., here in Atlanta, when he was 83 years old. At my job. He actually spoke to me first. He had just come from the doctor's office. We had a great conversation.

Great actor he was good in Roots and the bully Sergeant on An Officer and Gentleman. I'm sure he won an Oscar for that role.
