Lotus Challenge: Old man gets stuck in an Exige S

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We love the Lotus Exige S, but we hate the doors -- it's incredibly difficult to get in and out of the thing. With that in mind, we challenged members of the public to get in and out of an Exige S Roadster as gracefully as they could. Some failed, many succeeded, and others -- including 60-year-old Costas, almost died in the process.

A few years ago I had to take my Elise in to get the emissions tested. For some reason the tester had to get into the drivers seat and check some things. He was a big fat guy and clearly wouldn't fit, so he went and got a small woman that worked there. She got in ok but then couldn't get out. Then the big guy started yelling at her "You wouldn't have so much trouble getting out if you didn't have that wooden leg!" Everybody working there started laughing. Turns out that she did in fact have a prosthetic leg. I ended up having to take the top of the car so that two guys could pull her up out of the seat. Best laugh I had all day.

I'm 6'5" about 220 pounds. I have absolutely no problem getting into my 2006 Lotus Exige, it's all about technique. And once I'm in, space is more than sufficient. The thing most of these people fails to do is that they should step with their first leg past the steering wheel. When getting out you just have to get both your feet out first, then lift your ass and get out.

that's the newer version...the original is even more difficult to get in! but my god...what a car....it costs a third as much as a normal super car, yet performs as well if not better. it does three times as much to the gallon as a super car ....costs virtually nothing for tyers ....,it's made of fibre glass and aluminium so it never rusts, it's engine parts and engine are from toyota so can be bought anywhere for little money....I rest my case

Things people ignore about the sills on the Elise/Exige. 1. The car was designed as a track car to be used on the road, not the other way around. 2. The sills are incredibly strong and protect the occupant way more than a lower silled ‘conventional’ car would do, plus the doors have a huge aluminium impact bar in them too. 3. Other super car type cars have exactly the same issue as the Lotus does, but cost vastly more than the Lotus. 4. The method of Ingress/egress is learned and has never been a problem to me and actually adds to the experience. 5. The uniqueness of the means of access makes the car more fun & more of an experience than any conventional sports car. 6. If you want convenience then buy a dullard estate car & then you can complain about the slowness, it’s poor handling & how boring it is. 7. Aluminium chassis & sills are lightweight and do not rust. Steel bodied cars way more, make the car slower & definitely rust.

The key is to move the seat all the way back before entering and exiting and it is a lot easier with the roof off. Also, when you get in you want to put one hand on the sill with a straight arm (to support your weight) and then lower yourself with that arm into the seat while your other hand is on the top of the steering wheel. Getting out, stick your head out first, put your hand on the sill again and extend that arm to lift yourself and then step out with the foot closest to the door first. Yes, it does take practice and you eventually develop 'Lotus muscles' in your upper body after a while which eventually makes it easier. Yup, I had one. It's worth the effort. :-)

Aw... I felt so sorry for the Greek guy. Also, is it just me or is the audio level off? The commentary and music varied quite a bit in volume, and I had to keep turning the volume up and down. Other than that, really funny and great video! :)

18 months ago i went to the Lotus dealer to look at an Elise 220. I asked the salesman to show how to get in and out. He was a youthful 25 and leapt in and literally bounced out. So got in without too much difficulty. Once in i thought Yup gotta get one. Anyway getting out was a different challenge altogether. 10 minutes to drag my carcass out of the car. Ridiculous. So NO SALE. 50 odd year olds like me can afford the car , but our spines cannot get us in and out

I just don't understand why Lotus doesn't propose a hardtop we can remove AND open (like the T-Top on some cars). You open the door, you open the top and you can get in and out way easier. And then you can close the top, close the door and keep a perfectly coupe car. And if you remove the hardtop, you have a perfectly nice roadster. It could maybe even be done as an aftermarket part... my 2¢
