@@SirAndacar There was something about it on the behind the scenes material. A lady had told Hill about their child passing away and how no parent should have to do this. He said that the moment stuck with him, and so it was included in the script. He said he wanted to really make that one line perfect. In my opinion he succeeded.

Bernard Hill seems to receive a criminally low amount of praise for his work in these movies. He's just brilliant, and he portrays one of the most human and complex characters in the trilogy .

Bernard Hill, God rest him, embodied one of Tolkien's finest characters. Theoden is a tragic hero, wracked by grief and age, forcing himself to fight insurmountable odds when his best days are behind him, in a world which seems to be changing for the worse. But despite the hopelessness, he always made the character feel so charming and fatherly.

These kind of LOTR scenes are what made the Hobbit Trilogy feel like they were missing something. LOTR had a certain poetry and atmosphere to it. The Hobbit just felt like a rushed action-adventure movie.

I don't know, there were many "magic moments" in the Hobbit. When Bilbo explains why he kept with the company and others. Most did include Bilbo, tbf to David Yang I would say there weren't half as many in the Hobbit.

Sweetpea Chickpea For sure. The high-ups didn't even want to wait a few months for Martin Freeman to be available, can you imagine those films without Freeman!. And I think most people were behind putting a female character or two in the Hobbit. And Thranduil is Legolas' father, why wouldn't Legolas be there. But the shitty love story was forced on him that nobody really liked. And Legolas really didn't need to be used in that way, could have shown him leading his fellow people at the Battle of the 5 armies in a general's role, something we haven't seen him do before. Instead we got gravity defying matrix bullshit that got boring quickly. I mean, we all know Legolas survives, so there was no danger for him. Why not let Beorn fight Bolg where there's more tension. And who didn't want to see Bolg gett his face torn off by a giant bear ;) ... rant over lol.

I gotta give Theoden some credit. His mind was recently taken over by Saruman (can't imagine what kind of hell that was). His only son just died. And 10000 uruks are coming to destroy him, his people, and his kingdom. But yet he was able to keep his shit together and help lead his men to victory. Not many people would be able to do that.

Actually Theodens a representation of the self centered issues that plague men in Middle Earth and not that great of a leader though not quite the piece of shit the steward of Gondor is. A common theme is how the older races view the arrogant youth of mankind and he is a part of this theme. He's expressly advised AGAINST going to Helms Deep in the film for good reason but he insists on going because "it's never been breached". He is advised to call for aid from Gondor but doesn't because wah where was Gondor when I needed them. The walls of Helms Deep are breached and he is forced back to the inner keep and is ready to call it quits when Aragorn convinces him to attempt to take the initiative and ride out. It is only through the works of Gandalf, and Aragorn that the battle of Helms Deep is salvaged. Theodin later comes to represent the redeemable qualities of man by answering the call to aid at Minas Tirith but he's purposely written as a flawed ruler and hardly wins the day at Helms Deep.

You can see the child is terrified. He knows he is going to die. That scene always haunted me. It's odd, but seeing that scene in meme form, to represent the italian medical students that would become doctors in the middle of the worst pandemic in a hundred years, haunted me just as much. Baptized by fire, asked to defend your people when you do not feel ready, not knowing if you will make it in uncertain and terrifying times. I think it is why both the books and the films have withstood the test of time. Because we see in them the chaos of our own times.

All the best lines in the movie come directly from the books, and Theoden gets more than most, hence why his dialogue is so powerful.

SusantheRestorer He says so in the video commentary. When I say improvised, there is a story behind it. He was working with people who had lost their children (like a charity thing) and a woman said "No parent should have to bury their child". Bernard said that line stuck with him ever since and he knew he wanted to put it in the film.

This speech is comprised of various extracts from a short piece of poetry Tolkien wrote in the book. Tolkien himself drew the inspiration from a part of an Old English (he was professor of Anglo-saxon at Oxford) poem called 'The Wanderer'. Goes a little like this: 'Hwaer cwom mearg, hwaer cwom mago? Hwaer cwom maþþumgyfa? Hwaer cwom symbla gesetu? Hwaer sindon seledreamas? Eala beorht bune, eala byrnwiga, eala theodnes þrym! Hu seo þrag gewat, Genap under nihthelm, swa heo no waere!' Translates as this into modern English, with a rough approximation of the metre: 'Whither has gone the horse, whither the man? Where now is the giver of treasure? Where are the palaces of the feast, where are the pleasures of the hall? Alas for the glittering goblet! Alas for the girt warrior! Alas for the princes power! How those days have departed, Darkened under night's shadow, as if they had never been!' Just a little light trivia for you.

***** Indeed. Usually well done, though sometimes it loses a bit of impact. For example, because he cut the Battle of Pelanor fields rather short, the "DEATH!" cry is moved from Eomer's brief monologue mid battle after seeing Eowyn fallen in the field to the part right before the Rohirrim charge. Which robs it of some of its potency: in the movie it's more about grim intimidation, while in the book it represented a shift of the Rohirrim from the bold thrill of battle to grim, despairing wrath.

Reminds me of the Ring Keeper's speech in Beowulf, where his whole tribe was wiped out by war and famine and all he had left was treasure, so he sealed it up in a mountain only for a Dragon to claim it shortly after his death. Theoden is very much echoing the Key Keeper's tone except this is directly before the battle rather than after. ""Now, earth, hold what earls once held and heroes can no more; it was mined from you first by honorable men. My own people have been ruined in war; one by one they went down to death, looked their last on sweet life in the hall. I am left with nobody to bear a sword or burnish plated goblets, put a sheen on the cup. The companies have departed. The hard helmet, hasped with gold, will be stripped of its hoops; and the helmet-shiner who should polish the metal of the war-mask sleeps; the coat of mail that came through all fights, through shield-collapse and cut of sword, decays with the warrior. Nor may webbed mail range far and wide on the warlord's back beside his mustered troops. No trembling harp, no tuned timber, no tumbling hawk swerving through the hall, no swift horse pawing the courtyard. Pillage and slaughter have emptied the earth of entire peoples."

So saddened to read the news... Bernard Hill was brilliant as King Theoden, I always look forward to the scenes with him the trilogy. This scene, Forth Eorlingas, when he woke up from Sarumanns grasp and of course the speech in RotK, all powerful scenes. Because of him, his performance. Always remembered, always living on through others, may he rest in peace. Your men my lord, will follow you to whatever end ❤

This trilogy is also a fine example of a character EARNING a kingship. Aragorn stood up for what was right even when it wasn't easy, fought through everything, defended those who were unable to defend themselves, stared down Sauron himself, and was prepared to sacrifice himself at the Black Gate to give Frodo a chance of making it to Mt. Doom. By the end, he was worthy of becoming king, he didn't disappear for a while and then do literally nothing ("Who has a better story than Bran the Broken?" EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE ENTIRE FUCKING SHOW! No I'm not bitter).

This is also one of Gamling's best scenes. He doesn't freak out, he senses what is going on and actually provides the temporary foundation for Théoden to recover. Notice how gamling initiates the armour dress up as soon as Théoden asks the question "who am I", cueing Gamling as to what is happening for Théoden (self doubt, openness, curiosity, quiet determination). King or attendant, it's just two bros (humans) who know how to show up for each other. Thoughts?

Perfect representation of brotherhood. The king, with the weight of the world upon his shoulders, begins to show self-doubt. His closest friend and advisor recognizes this, immediately steps in to lift him back up, and remind Theoden of who he is, and what his duty calls for.

1:11 this is one of the most haunting shots I’ve ever seen on film. A little boy being given weapons of war because there is no one else left to fight. A helmet that is clearly meant for someone older than he, but they’re not there anymore, so it’s his responsibility. Through the course of the battle Jackson doesn’t show any of the children fighting or dying, but we see who survives the battle at the end, and they aren’t there. This whole scene absolutely crushes me every time I watch it

@@laurasosnow383 In a war of extermination there would be no other choice, the scene that haunts me the most is the kid who hefts a shied, covered in chainmail, the shield bigger than his torso. A lot of scenes were an allegory to Tolkiens experience in World War 1, where boys of this age went to fight and die, of course the British Army's stance was you had to be of age, but many a time they ignored it if they looked young, they knew, and they willingly sent 14 year old boys to die in those trenches. For King and Country but unlike this scene where they were forced to take up arms, in most cases those boys went willingly, until they saw the reality of war and wanted to go home but couldn't, desertion being an executable offence by firing squad. But the parallels here cannot be mistaken

When I was younger, I used to find Theoden rather annoying. He always seemed to be either complaining or bickering, but now, he is one of my absolute favourite characters. He not only bears the immense burden of being King of Rohan, but also the fear of being, as Saruman said “A lesser son of greater sires.” He’s completely riddled with self doubt, and yet he still manages to be the absolute backbone of his kingdom. When the shit has completely hit the fan, he’s always there with a beautiful lament like this, followed by a deafening roar of resistance. “Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered! A sore day! A red day! ERE THE SUN RISES!”

"How did it come to this?" This line has haunted me so much over the years. Bernard Hill's delivery of this speach was impeccable and really hammered home desperate of a situation this was for his people. This was puncuated by equally haunting shots of elderly men and terrified boys (probably no older than their late-teens) getting handed weapons and battle armour, inter-cut with the ceaseless march of the Uruk-hai army. In short, this scene is as close to perfection as you can get in film. I get chills every time I watch it.

Watching it in theaters again gave me a very profound admiration for this scene. The words, acting, music and imagery. Its all there. Really feeling the music is what does it.

And so comes the end of King Theoden of Rohan. May he rest in peace. Thank you so much Bernard Hill! You will be missed 😭

Tolkien was fighting in WWII in Africa against the black armored tanks and machines of Nazi Germany. The entire world of Lord of the Rings and the struggle of it's Free People's against evil is what Tolkien himself felt like he was fighting against in his life.

I prefer aragon my reason is summed up later in the same move. Aragon : Ride out with me. Theoden: For death and glory. Aragon: no, for your people. Aragon's priorities are strait even when it is hopeless.

For me one of the best scene in the entire trilogy

Something happened to movies at some point between the 2000s and the 2010s. Scenes like this just don't exist anymore.

Agree with you. Artistic vision is missing. Nearly movie these days is a cheap money grabbing knock-off, rather than emphasizing on cinema as an art or medium of expression.

This scene was from a book, and was in fact shortened for the movie. Movies rarely had such powerful scenes that did not come from books.

Yup; its interesting, I watched this movie first as young teenager and seeing those kids being armed had very little impact on me, now as an adult I find it very unpleasant.

The cinematography and lighting is simply magical in these films

LynchByInch imagine be a child, in a gigantic room of a Cinema with all the sound at the top... Fuck, that was gorgeous, one of my best experiences ever, hardly any film make me feel like that again

It is scenes like this that make LOTR one of the greatest trilogies of our time. The emotion and meaning behind every single verse is just too much. LOTR was in all aspects, a unique masterpiece.

+mpogias13 youre right ..It misses in The Hobbit..They are trying to do it here and there in The Hobbit, but its drowning in big battles and CGI..Some of the scenes where it could have been like LoTR they have deleted like the scenes with Thranduil and Legolas in Mirkwood or Bilbo planting acorn in Dale..Its not that I dont like The Hobbit, I do like it, but its just not as epic as LoTR..

Came here after I recently heard the passing of Bernard Hill. I can’t believe the news! Thank you for everything, our King! We will follow you to whatever end! You were strong in life. Your spirit will find its way to the halls of your fathers. Forth Eorlingas! 1944-2024 🙏🏼

One of the best scenes of the Two Towers. There will never be a movie and a cast such as the LOTR ever again.

adore it when LOTR goes full shakespearean. bernard hill also has the gravitas to pull it off magnificently. the poetry combined with the montage of the children being armed. incredible work really

Gandalf was a needed balm in my day, but focusing on Theoden when watching the 2nd movie is richly rewarding. RIP Bernard Hill.

I feel like the silhouettes of the men moving past the doorway add an amazing cinematic depth to this scene, almost like they are already-dead soldiers ‘passing’ into the halls of Mandos; and all Theoden feels he can do is stand and watch his countrymen ‘move into the West’. He is frozen in fear and indecision but still bound to his duty, and to compare this scene to both his first appearance as a wizened old monster, and the final charge at the Pelennor, where he became a true Lord of the West, is to see Theoden’s character arc and development as one of the strongest in film history.

As someone who grew up without a father figure.. these movies taught me more about responsibility, love, and purpose as a man in this life. Its the little things that matter, as long as they matter to someone somewhere. Such a great example of the similarities and differences between honor/pride, strength/bravery, and courage/faith. The films give me clarity like nothing else ❤

The way this was written, performed and shot with a room to breathe, draws you like a stage performed soliloquy. There is something special to watching a good Hamlet or King Lear, and in films often, such monologues are overshadowed and downplayed.

Just so beautiful. The dialogue. The music. The faithful soldier. The doubting king. The eulogizing speech. The dark army marking. The fearful boy becoming a man. The white light transitioned to shadow. Masterpiece.

In a movie already approaching 3 hours, I’m forever grateful PJ took the time for moments like these.

Bernard Hill is a national treasure. He has many of the best lines, and his delivery, body language and facial expressions are unsurpassed. He's absolutely thrilling to watch.
