Saying Frodo is weak and whiny shows how psychological suffering isn't seen as true pain by most. The Ring was a poison that weakened him psychologically, made him vulnerable to manipulation, put in his head paranoïd thoughts about his own friends, poisoned his mind so much that it began to attack him physically in the end. And still, he carried on for longer than any ring bearer before him. Still, even if pain was killing his mind, he was able to see light (by having regrets, by finding strength, by remembering the importance of their quest) after months of carrying evil itself. The Ring was literally pulling him to the ground, and still he was climbing on his hands and knees to fulfill his mission until he couldn't anymore. It was never a matter of will, because Frodo has proven just by his resillience to evil how much willing he was, but of capability : and that's where Sam was important. Sam was his strength when he couldn't do it anymore, was his support when the poison was too strong and was still here even when Frodo was blind by suffer and manipulation. When I suffered from mental illness, and I re-watched the Lord of The Rings, I realized how Frodo was an incredible portrayal of being mentally ill. For months he was abused, manipulated, depressed, paranoid, physically ill. His suffer was constant, day and night. He was not in any way weak, and Sam having to help him in the end doesn't mean he wasn't brave and willing. His body and mind just weren't able to keep on. Their friendship is one of the greatest in cinema, and the true hero of LOTR for me. Sam wouldn't have been able to carry the ring for as long as Frodo did, so Frodo was necessary for the quest to be done. And Frodo wouldn't have been able to support himself through the pain if it weren't for Sam, so Sam was necessary for the quest to be done.

@Andrew X A lot of fans are actually saying this, I wasn't creating this out of thin air, thank you. I've had conversations about how "Frodo is weak and whiny" with other people. He was suffering because he was carrying literal evil, I think anyone would be a bit influenced by that without being weak in the first place. Also what the fuck are you even talking about? What do you know about anyone being strong or weak or "making excuses"? I "got my shit together" several years ago if you were referring my mental health issues. I wasn't looking for your great wisdom about getting better, so you can kindly fuck off.

Frodo carried a heavy burden of the ring even older people lost their minds when they saw the ring for the first time but frodo kept it for the very end and he kept on fighting for everyone and the wound on his chest and the ring were making it even harder for him he still did it in between he did started losing to the ring but he never fully gave up his heart was still with him the burden couldn't be carried by big people but considering his age and the fact he was a child a teen he carried that weight and kept on fighting against himself everyday every moment for me and it's the truth frodo was and will always be one of the strongest character in lord of the rings everyone thinks he is weak without even realising what he had to go through and the heavy burden of the ring was with him he is one of the strongest and bravest character in my opinion the sacrifices he made and everything he truly is the most underrated and most deep character that needs understanding hope you get my point

Whoever thinks of Frodo as a weakling, does not grasp just how utterly excruciating human suffering can be in the face of pure evil. In proportion to the evil he faced and the agony he felt, his strength of heart was extraordinary. Sam was a hero, but he did not and could not understand Frodo's burden...his greatest pain was seeing his closest friend suffer and being unable to lift the burden from him. I feel like this tribute delves into the very soul of Frodo, and it's soooo deep it leaves me teary-eyed. Who made this video truly understands their subject.

The sad part is when frodo wakes up in rivendell after he destroys the ring and sees Sam, and you can see in his eyes that he immediately loses his happiness that he had when he saw marry and pippen, and feels guilty. he has this never ending self doubt and guilt for putting on the ring at mount doom even when he ended up destroying the ring. Beautiful tribute to the only character who sacrificed his body and his soul for the greater good. That quest has claimed his life. The journey from cheerful Hobbit to the point where he "can't recall the taste of food, nor the sound of water, nor the touch of grass. He's naked in the dark. There's nothing--no veil between him and the wheel of fire.", and yet kept going even if it meant poisoning his mind and damaging his body even more with every step he takes. And he was the only one who had 3 major injures form each one of them he could be dead : Morgul blade, sting from Shelob and the Ring around his neck for a year. For Frodo.

"Even the smallest person can change the course of the future." (c) Galadriel, The Fellowship of the Ring Frodo and Sam's journey is the great lesson we all should embrace: 1. Never give up, you are the only blacksmith of your life. You are to decide what you have to do with the time that is given to you. If you don't find a way, no one will. 2. True friendship is what keeps your boat afloat. Don't let true friends sink in the ocean of fake friends who have vested interests in you. 3. Don't give in to the gold and power that it gives you. It's what can make you corrupt. You don't want to end your journey like that. Be ready to go home when the time is right.

Hate to say it, but Tolkien never wrote or said that. It’s an invention of the film. The closest quote from the book is: "This quest may be attempted by the weak with as much hope as the strong. Yet such is oft the course of deeds that move the wheels of the world: small hands do them because they must, while the eyes of the great are elsewhere." - Elrond

Frodo deserves so much love. He was the bravest of them all. And the kindest too. He had the toughest task, or an impossible task, to be more precise. He went on a journey that would rob him of all the life he had, all the life he wanted to have, but could not. He thought Shire-folk were simpletons, but when it came to saving the same person, he didn't flinch once. People say it was his fate, so he doesn't deserve the credit as much others, especially Sam. Yes, it was his fate, but Elrond had already said that Frodo wasn't bound by the quest. He did that anyway. He couldn't have made it without Sam, but he wasn't meant to. No one does things singlehandedly, and neither did Frodo. Just because he needed help from someone doesn't mean he didn't do enough. If anything, he did the most, and his tragedy was that he fell short. Instead of shitting on him, people need to be empathetic towards him. How would YOU feel if you give your 100% (literally), and it's still not enough?

  • @haniasn2365

Frodo is such a brave and tragic character. What makes me the saddest is that, after he destroyed the ring, some of his lost hopes came back "I can see the Shire, the Brandwyn river, Bag-End...". He could picture himself live again, in an abstract way, after having been poisoned by evil for so long. But the return was not what he expected - he was delusioned. The wounds had cut deep. And he just couldn't hold on his ancient life anymore. I can't help but think about all these men and women, coming back from our all too real wars, affected by the flashbacks, PTSD, chronic anxiety, paranoia and all mental illnesses that especially at one time couldn't be treated correctly - especially at *Tolkien's* time. Who knows how many unknown Frodos existed and still exist. I hope that one day, most of them can be helped and succeed to come back home. Thank you for your work. This character means a lot to me - I actually cried while doing the subtitles lol.

Fantastic to see Frodo finally getting one of these. He was the bravest, and dare I say greatest character in the entire series and is often left unnoticed by everyone because he isn't the strongest fighter like Gimli, or the greatest leader like Aragorn, or the oldest and wisest like Gandalf or Elrond. However, while everyone else wants the ring for themselves, Frodo gets the one ring and becomes a ring bearer (one of the most powerful beings in all of Middle Earth) because he knows that it must be destroyed to ensure that everyone in Middle Earth is saved. He is by far the most selfless character in the entire series, sacrificing not just his life but also his soul for the betterment of the world and the only people that actually show that they truly understand how great his sacrifice is are Sam, Gandalf, and Aragorn. When Aragorn says at the end "My friends, you bow to no one." and then kneels before the four hobbits in reality it should have been everyone kneeling before Frodo alone. He did more for Middle Earth than anyone else.

Wonderfully done. Frodo's my favourite character, which for some reason is kind of uncommon in this fandom. And I admit that he's a bit unconventional for the hero to carry one of the greatest fantasy franchises of all time. He's not like Bilbo, who starts as the underdog, but then later saves the day multiple times when his friends get in trouble and he has to step up and fight for them. Frodo carries the Ring, his struggles are internal, and he wins his fight every moment for the entire journey - except for the very last. It hurts like hell that for all of that, there's no reward. He lost the cosy, peaceful Hobbit life he was supposed to have and came back with nothing but some trauma and some wounds that will never heal. And as much as I personally think he should have stayed in the shire and married Sam, him having to actually leave middle earth entirely is such a strong and heart wrenching conclusion to his arc... I will never *not* cry when I read or watch the ending. Because it's all things considered a very happy ending, everything worked out, almost all good guys survived and get to marry the girl/go home/be king etc. Except for Frodo. And that's why it annoys me so much that people don't appreciate him enough. He was so unbelievably strong, and he sacrificed everything, but because he didn't slay any spiders or orcs or big elephants, people call him a "damsel in distress" who's just whining all the time. Like, come on, can you not look a *little* deeper than that?

I've come to appreciate Frodo with time, as I've grown up as a person myself. I guess many people just can't relate to his inner struggle, as it's not as obvious as the physical fighting, or value his nobility of mind, as it's not as "awesome" as some other heroic character traits. But isn't that just Frodo's fate, the burden and doom he agrees to bear? To suffer himself loss, so that others could gain? To go unthanked as he silently fades away from life, the prosperous life others are enjoying because of what he did? His fate is the same in and out of story. Remember when Frodo had a moment of weakness in the Morgul vale? When he realized the war has started, and feared that he was too late? That even if he destroyed the Ring, everyone he knew would be dead by then? He revealed something very important at that moment. He revealed, what was his temptation - what it was that the Ring was tormenting him with. (Otherwise he never lets it slip.) Frodo after all desired to be a famous hero. He wanted the great people to know him and praise him. He too had in such ambition, such weakness that the Ring could torture him, get a hold of his mind. His struggle was to convince himself he needs to do his task no matter what, no matter what happens to him himself, if he gains anything out of it, or even if he just loses everything and dies. I recall Tolkien wrote in some of his letters about this - that Frodo's weakness was his unspoken desire to be a hero. It's sad and beautiful how his story went. He seems to have felt in the end that he failed, that he was corrupted after all. He had no peace of mind. And he still longed for the Ring after its destruction and even felt everything dark and lost without it. But it's not only a depressing tale. He grew so much as a person. He became wiser, with great insight and inner nobility. I recall Tolkien wrote his favourite theme wasn't tragedy, but transfiguration. Frodo became, in a sense, sanctified, ennobled. Letting go of desire or indeed need for wordly fame is part of it all. It's beautiful. And writing this I finally realize it's official, after being a passionate Tolkien fan for 18 years, Frodo has finally become my favorite character. In the very beginning it was Pippin - appropriate for a young person to identify with the kid surrogate character - and Boromir because I was edgy, and Legolas because he was pretty. Then later on in adult life, Gandalf and Elrond, for being mature. And now Frodo, for being spiritual.

@@AnnaMarianne Thank you, that was a really interesting and insightful comment. I'm very new to being a Tolkien fan, and quite young as well - and yes, Pippin is also one of my absolute favorites, just because his parts are the most fun to read. And well, I kind of have a thing for Eowyn. Because she's pretty, and pretty cool :) I'm gonna pay attention to what you said on my next reading (god I'm looking forward to that) because some of the stuff you said I've never thought about. The way many people dismiss Frodo and what he did reminds me of the way the rest of the Hobbits back at home treat our heroes when they return: Merry and Pippin are cool fighters with swords and are therefore admired, even Sam gets more recognition than he himself thinks he does, just Frodo doesn't. Because the people ultimately don't understand or care to understand what he did. And if I remember correctly, this bothers Sam, who obviously thinks Frodo is a great hero and doesn't like that others can't see it. And when people on the Internet say "Sam is the real hero, Frodo was so useless" I always think about how much Sam would disagree with that. I have to admit, the way you talked about Frodo's fate and unspoken desire to be a hero after all... I got pretty emotional just reading that. It's such a powerful story. When I first read Return of the king (so like... Five months ago), I hadn't watched the movies or heard stuff from friends. All I knew was that it was obviously going to end well, and that they would be rescued by giant eagles. I was certain he was going to destroy the Ring and live happily ever after. And when Frodo failed, that really hit me. Such an extraordinary moment to read... Because of course he couldn't do it in the end, nobody would have been able to. An accident was kind of the only way it could have gone. It isn't really a failure, the world is saved after all, but it feels like a failure to Frodo. I didn't really pick up on this the first time I read it, but you're right, he isn't free of the ring, because he didn't destroy it. And that's one of the reasons why the final shot of him on the boat where he smiles makes me cry SO much. Because that is his way to finally being free, going into the west. I'm sorry for rambling for so long :D your comment kind of inspired me to just... Put my own thoughts into semi readable paragraphs. The truth is, I don't know shit about Tolkien. And I mostly don't care for what HE thought the correct interpretation of the characters is - he would be pretty pissed about the whole "Frodo and Sam are gay" thing, which I 100% stand behind :D But you've been reading these books for almost as long as I've been alive and I really, really enjoyed hearing your perspective. So again, thank you :)

@@baguettegott3409 It's great to have long in depth discussions with other fans, so the pleasure is mutual. To be honest, I'm even a bit jealous of you - I'd like to be able go back in time and discover Middle-earth again for the first time. The author is very much "dead", that is, the reader is free to make their own interpretations independent of what the author intended. And funnily enough, it was Tolkien's intention that people wouldn't ask what his intentions were, but would construct their own view of the story as suited them and their life. He was very passionate about this topic - and in general he was a very freedom minded person, even a self-described "anarchist". So when I wrote about Tolkien's ponderings on his own characters, I didn't mean you would need to view the story through that lens, or that you should adopt Tolkien's opinions as your own. I just have become very fond of him as a person, because his letters and his life reveal that he grew to be a person with a very gentle, introspective and wise heart. So it interests me personally what further insights he had. They often lead me to new realizations about how to construct multilayered stories, and help me with my own writing. But you don't *need* to know any of them to enjoy his books. Anyhow, I'm glad you've joined this fine fandom. Enjoy your stay!

Frodo never had to do anything special, he never had to be the one to stand up to something in the movies. He may have seemed like a princess in need of saving during these movies but what people miss is his wits that you see when he solves the riddle at Moria, his love for his friends when he screams at Gandalf's fall, is heartbroken at Boromir's death and when he realises what he did to Sam at Cirith Ungol. But the most important thing of all... his power over the ring, the fact that he held onto such a thing for so long, almost 2 years.. when someone could pick it up and fall to it instantly as Isildur did, and don't even get me started on his ability to fight Gollum after his finger was bitten off and still then hold onto the edge of a cliff and run out of Mount Doom to only THEN lay down and stop. Any of these things are enough to tell you how beautiful of a character he is.

I love Frodo so much, I can say without a doubt that he is my favorite character. He suffered and he never truly returned from his journey. He didn't need to be physically strong-he carried the burden of the most evil object in all of middle earth. He suffers, as we do. As for him and sam-they are strong in different ways. They made each other stronger, were each other's heroes, and I don't think there is any comparison either way. I love both frodo and sam, and how their love gives each other strength. I think that is the whole point. When we suffer, even we do not fully return to our normal lives after trauma, it is love that keeps us strong. I love lotr man, I could go on and on!

@@mederecord7991, totally. They think he's weak, useless, a coward, "why is he so stupid?" when he gives in to putting on the ring or not throwing it in the fire. I've never talked to them about it before, but when I finally do, I'm going to show them this video and tell them THIS is why Frodo is the hero. Also, I read somewhere that J.R.R. Tolkien wrote Frodo based off of himself and that when asked who the true hero was, he said Sam, which makes total sense to me because Frodo himself would look at all his own failures and say the exact same thing (humility being another one of Frodo's many positive traits). I think I just love Frodo so much because he's so human. He's not perfect, he's not a great fighter, he's technically not even the most resistant to the Ring (Sam is) -- but the fact that he's human enough to be tempted and fall, human enough to spare Gollum because he still sees some humanity in Gollum, and so persistent in resisting the Ring (or at least trying to) makes him so unique and complex as a protagonist, or just as a character in general. And all the personal trauma he takes due to WILLINGLY CHOOSING to bear the Ring, underrated. He literally sacrificed himself to save Middle Earth, received nothing in return (and didn't expect to) except for pain, and was forever changed as a person: there was no going back for him, he knew that, and he chose to bear the Ring anyway. If that doesn't make Frodo a hero, I urge you to reexamine your definition of what you think qualifies a hero.

He thinks he failed because he eventually fell to the power of the ring in mount doom. That's why he has to go to the undying lands, to be rid of this self destroying guilt. I didn't weep like this in so long...I couldn't even continue eating. We are so in awe by the heroic deeds of Aragorn, Gandalf, Elrond, Theoden, Eomer etc. That we forget the most heoric deed of all, for which all those mentioned above are just helpers: the destruction of evil from the root by throwing the ring in the fires of Mt. Doom. Frodo is not just the gratest hero of Lotr, but all those around him pale in comparison to his sacrifice. This makes me think at the sacrifice of our Lord, Jesus Christ. This video wouldn't have been so good without a big portion of it being alotted to: Sam, from an obscure garderner from the Shire he becomes a synonim for best friend and friendship. That friend, sought by all of us, who will go with us to the utmost depths of hell (literally). Bilbo and Gandalf, the adoptive "father" and mentor (like a father that he never had). The keenness with which he follows his advice, the joy and stability that his presence inspires and the unbearable pain that he felt when he fell at Kazad-um makes Gandalf a true mentor and father figure for Frodo. Golum, a character tied to Bilbo and now to Frodo and to both of them through the ring. Golum hates and then loves the "master", Frodo, his two sides alternate and I think Bilbo was not far by Golum's fate. If he would've killed Gollum in that cave, he would've become Golum 2.0. That scene in the Forbidden Pool is just too much for the simple Smeagol and evil takes over. Evil takes over Frodo too in Mt. Doom, only the sellfish intervention of Gollum makes the ring of power to go down. All in all, a peculiat connection between these 3 ring-bearers. I'll go on finishing eating. Thank you for this treat! Good job! I cried like a baby.

That is honestly the moment in the film where Frodo fully communicates, to the best of his speaking ability, how much of a waking nightmare his life has become, and it is so perfectly contrasted with Sam's desire to remember something good, only for him to discover the horror that the Ring has taken even memory away from his friend, something that at least Sam can hold onto in the worst of times is something that Frodo is totally deprived of, he has nothing left but the Ring that had consumed everything.

Considering LOTR was somewhat based on Tolkien's experience of World War, I can only feel for the real soldiers returning to a 'normal' life and who must have suffered post-traumatic stress disorder after enduring such war and destruction. Lo has conseguido. Emotivo, magnífico. Puro Arte.

Everyone saying that Sam should be more the hero but I don’t agree with that Sam was Frodo’s hold and strength like his bones but Frodo WAS the *Ring bearer* As a Ring Bearer it isn’t easily to handle this This give you too much emotional and psychical stress and you hear all the time voices in your head you feeling like you are going crazy And Sam didn’t know the feeling what Frodo went through bc of the ring But for my eyes Sam and Frodo both are the heroes Together they did it ! No one did it more or better as the other one See the difference At the end Sam stayed but Frodo need to leave the world bc the power of the ring made him weak and destroyed him mentally Sam was not the "Ring bearer" but Frodo Sam was the supporter and strength for Frodo Both played a big role into this Both were very important for this Frodo was so strong just sad that the most don’t see him this way Your edit of this video is amazing I don’t know how to say this in words ✨

This is beautiful as always! The music is always so on point with the transitions and the emotions the scenes give you, also you added so many flashbacks in the words of the characters, and they fit so well! I realised something that made me appreciate the character of Frodo - something I always had trouble with. He, unlike Bilbo, is nothing more than a child - not longing for responsibility, but for the light-heartedness and cheerfulness of the Shire ("I am not like you, Bilbo"). Still, deep down he knows that he is to become more than that. So when the Ring comes to him, he knows in his heart that it is his duty to destroy it, and his instincts and destiny lead him down a path far greater than himself. But it does not lead him to the same development that we see in Aragorn, for example, which is to mature, to take responsibility, to become a leader. Frodo, on the other hand, remains what he is and always will be: a Hobbit. And so, on the long and endless journey to Mordor, he has to let go of his docile personality because it is incompatible with his duty. Gradually he becomes his duty, nothing more. And so it is a real sacrifice. He is a person with a spirit not necessarily less strong than a hero, but certainly with a less robust soul. But that does not detract from the fact that he did the job. With the help of a friend and nothing more. But had he not been so stubborn as to keep his cruel fate to himself, there would have been no friend to help him, and evil would not have been able to undo itself at the Mount Doom by putting the two corrupted and consumed souls that are Frodo and Smeagol against each other. He is an unconventional hero - the depressed martyr.

It's brilliant , my friend! ^^ In my opinion , I would really like to see Frodo against the moria orcs or against the terrorific spider! But again , this is probably the best edit for Frodo in all Middle Earth and this world xD PS : 4:00-4:14 look at that rythm!! :)
