Lost PLA Casting Game Pieces for a Friend | 3D printed parts to Aluminum Castings

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today we do something a bit different, a friend of mine brought over some molds he wanted to cast. They are game pieces for an old table top game that predates chess. It goes by many names like tafl or hnefatafl or a bunch of others I couldn't possibly produce. Seriously, hnefatafl looks like someone mashed their face against the keyboard and just got a grab bag of letters. The game is pretty cool, though. It's a perfect excuse to do some lost PLA casting again, too.

    so i actually learned this game years ago at the renaissance festival its called hnefatafl and its pronounced like nef-uh-tafl. as stated in the video it was the predecessor of chess originated by the vikings and is easier to learn than chess but doesnt lack complexity, for anyone interested in chess this is a cool game to learn

    I've had some success clearing my molds by putting them in the kitchen oven at 500°F for 10-12 hours. The PLA melts out, I have a decent void to work with. Might be worth researching for your purposes.

    looked like an interesting way of casting i think if you put the cans upside down when you place them upside down intoo a different can during the burnout the pla wont get intoo youre furnace and the casting cans probably stay in better shape too as you grab the outer can for taking the stuff out of the furnace i wonder if you can lay the ingots on top of the castingmoulds / soupcans standing straight up in the furnace and have the aluminium slowly melt / trickle intoo the moulds inside the furnace it might give the aluminium more time to flow in and flow slower giving it more time to replace the air inside the mould , might take less time to complete the poor (when ingot it gone turn off heat) so the aluminium doesnt overheat and the dross float on the top of the can turn the fire off leave them in the furnace untill there cooled then fish them out with youre hands and clean the moulds off taking it out and cooling it faster like trowing the whole lot in water while its still not completely solidified might create a vacuum that draws the aluminium in better think if you add small spruces pointing down toward the bottom and chambers under the peaks of the towers all the burned pla ash resideu , dross and stuff from the molten aluminium (hopefully ) will sink intoo that leaving good material on the tips of the peaks to file intoo shape

    You dont really need to heat the molds that hot usually if you have them upside down. I usually do it in a firepit, but you can always take another soup can and put underneath of it to let all of the plastic drain out. All your really looking for is to slowly evaporate the water/moisture away and to melt out the plastic. If you get it up to temp, it'll just melt out fairly easily. If you use a thin slurry of the sand/clay and paint it on with a paintbrush, it helps alot with not getting entrapped air bubbles.

    I just watched a video where dude used a different kind of plaster, I forget what it's called, but is more porous than regular plaster, then he put vacuum on it while the metal was molten, eliminated the need for vent holes, and the detail came out incredible.

    @@rich1051414 lol, yes if the flux is eating way your crucible does some mean it's working. All fluxes are damaging to crucibles, some are slower and some like borax are extremely fast. It's all a balancing act, balancing the chemical attacks on the crucibles and cleaning the metal vs the cost of replacing the crucibles. Basically it is important to use the minimum amount of flux that will do the job.

    Dry your plaster in your oven on 250F(120C) first. For as long as you have the patience for. 5 hours is usually good. Moisture in the air will immediately try to rehydrate the plaster, which is now acting as a desiccant, so don't wait too long after drying for your pour. I have had plaster crack on me due to sucking up moisture cause it was a humid muggy day. Not really much you can do.

    I'm working on similar 3d printed lost casting. Im working on a funnel right now. Instead of expensive ceramic coating with silicone powder I am applying a few layers of silicone and submerging the item around concrete/morter instead. This is because plaster of Paris is quite expensive considering you have to add twice as much plaster as water. And that means to get one gallon of volume you really need 2 gallons of plaster. And at $17 a bag it can get expensive. Instead concrete / mortar is only about five to seven dollars for a slightly higher volume. I'm still working out to see what exactly is the best low-cost method. Although I did take provisions to buy polysmooth filament which is chemically identical to polycast filament which is supposed to be Ash "free" technology. I'm still using pla for the riser for now though. I'm interested to see what methods you plan to use. Also have you been hitting the gym you seem like you've lost a lot of weight

    interested in your method with a few layers of silicone. how are you doing that? I get the part about submerging that in mortar but not sure about what you use for silicone and how you put those few layers on the model. how are you burning it out, at what temp? thanks

  • @mhypersonic

    @mhypersonic

    @@emaglott well I haven't actually burned it out yet I'll be doing that today but I got a liter of this silicone caulk / acrylic mixture call siliconizer. I picked it up at Home Depot And over the course of a day or so with a few changes of gloves I just slathered a few layers until it cured. If this type of silicone is ineffective I'll go for a more pure type to see if I can achieve a higher temperature resistance.

    The way I've seen this done in other videos, is they will put the mold in a kiln (upside down) so that PLA will melt or burn out. They then use a compressor the blow air into the mold opening to purge all the burned bits and ash out of the mold. Question for you Paul: Did you make your own crucible handle? I'm trying to figure out a way to safely get the crucible out of the forge without it accidentally dropping or spilling.
