    travgpeters1. I arrived in Tokyo at midnight. I was tired from the long flight, but too excited to sleep. The bright lights, the aromas, The sounds of a foreign city. It was exhilarating. That first night felt like a dream. It didn’t seem real. I had wanted to visit Japan since I was seven. After 36 years I had finally made it. I couldn’t believe I was really there. Tokyo. The big lights. After a quick shower and change of clothes I went out to get something to eat. I finally chose sushi, which was the best I had ever eaten. Tokyo is such a beautiful city. It was the best holiday. Better than I had hoped for. 8 months later I was back. Now, I am planning my 3rd trip.

    Such a simple film, yet it feels so intimate. It beautifully captures the feeling of loneliness and the eager to be found. I think this is the type of movie that most people will identify themselves some time in their lives... I watched it in 2008 for the first time and it's still my favorite movie ever.

    When I first saw it as a high school freshman, I was deep into FFXI where I'd interact with Japanese players who only spoke Japanese. We'd use in-game translators, but they were some of the nicest players of any MMORPG I've ever encountered. This movie gave me such an indescribable feeling even at such a young age. The atmosphere, mesmerizing but also the melancholy when Bob would talk to his wife on the phone and the goodbye at the end.

    I went to see this movie when it came out(I think it was 2004). I was a little broken hearted at the time and just wanted to escape to a dark theatre for a couple of hours. I didnt really know anything about this other than Bill Murray was in it, which was enough for me.........but straight away, seeing Tokyo lit up at night like that, the atmosphere, the music by Phoenix(I think) it all drew me in. I've never had an experience like at a film, I can't articulate it fully but all I know is by the end, when Bill is saying Goodbye to Charlotte I felt like my heart had been healed and I had just had a profoundly moving experience.

    A great opening, sets the tone, the colors and lights and other-worldliness... and the music, its harmony and hypnotic sway to it along with the main protag alone before his dream window and what great journey must be ahead. He seems also mesmerized by what must be a fascinating place, Tokyo, like a real-adventure-with-every-day-there kind of world. I wish I could do something like that but have read that Tokyo is the most expensive city in the world.

    @@bokal1986 Hi! Thanks for responding! Was it expensive to fly there? Also, how did you get by cheap. I read it's the most expensive city in the world. That would be nice as maybe I could put Tokyo on my bucket list. I plan to be a "Dharma Bum" as Jack Kerouac once said and travel all over the world as cheaply as possible. I just figured I could never go north and have to say "south" like south America, SE Asia, maybe Greece again that I love, and Italy (maybe too expensive as I'll live on $683 a month Social Security. I think Mongolia would be cheap as I'd like to see the Gobi Desert and take that famous train across Russia, but on my budget I don't think that's reality. Any advice I'd appreciate.

  • @bokal1986

    @bokal1986

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@mwj5368 I personally would drop South America and Europe (and Africa if you'd been considering it) due to high costs, and focus on South Eastern Asia. You would manage with your budget, it's not difficult at all. Renting a place long term, street food and transport wouldn't be of great cost. I would keep Mongolia and Russian's Trans Siberian express till summer, so you wouldn't need to carry both summer and winter cloth on the same trip. And yes, I would skip Japan in this case OR I would make a five days trip only to Tokyo in mid April to see cherry blossom. There are cheap flights from everywhere in Asia by AirAsia, and if you would stay in capsule hotels and eat instant food, you would still enjoy a very excellent part of Japan :)

    Okay this will be a lot. So you bill sleeping the car. All the while the music is playing which is quite slow and peaceful. He wakes up looks around and rubs his eyes as if to make sure he is awake. Very much like when we awake from sleeping. Adversely... at the end of the film. Bill is in back in the car. We see a 1st person view all the while music is playing in the background which is still peaceful. But then slowly fades to black. Very much like when we go to sleep. My point is when bill is waking up, he is waking up into a dream. When he falls asleep in the car and his dreams are reality. Going back to LA with his wife and his children. Wondering if what happened in Japan was more than a dream. Their future left in ambiguity.

    It's nothing but suitable that the almost delirious state portrayed in Lost in Translation opens with a drowsy man being driven through a city full of lights and "unreadable" bright signs. As if being welcomed into a dream that, curiously, closes during a morning, while everbody else are on their way to work, with the main characters preparing to "go back into reality."

    The intro scene of the 2003 film "Lost in Translation," directed by Sofia Coppola, is a poignant and atmospheric sequence that sets the tone for the rest of the movie. The scene opens with a shot of a neon-lit cityscape in Tokyo, Japan, as the camera pans across the bustling streets and buildings. The soundtrack features an ethereal and dreamlike track composed by Kevin Shields, contributing to the sense of disorientation and cultural contrast that permeates the film. The main character, Charlotte, played by Scarlett Johansson, is introduced lying on a bed in a hotel room, staring up at the ceiling, unable to sleep due to jet lag. The shots of her in this opening scene are often framed with a sense of isolation and introspection, emphasizing her disconnect from her surroundings. The room's decor and architecture, along with the unfamiliar sounds of the city outside, further highlight her displacement and sense of being lost. Cut to Bob Harris, played by Bill Murray, the other central character, also unable to sleep in his own hotel room. He's a middle-aged actor who has come to Tokyo to film a whiskey commercial, and his face reflects a mix of fatigue, boredom, and perhaps a bit of existential crisis. The scene switches between shots of Charlotte and Bob, both experiencing their own states of emotional and cultural alienation. The opening sequence effectively establishes the film's themes of loneliness, disconnection, and the search for meaning in an unfamiliar and overwhelming environment. The use of visuals, sound, and the actors' performances work together to immerse the audience in the characters' emotional states and to foreshadow the unique connection that will develop between Charlotte and Bob as the story unfolds.

    This ain't the full beginning of the opening scene. The ACTUAL beginning scene shows Scarlett Johannsen laying down with underwear on, THEN it cuts to Bill Murray asleep.

    Subtly trippy film; quite a few giveaways throughout that it all could just be a dream. Think it might be... Suntory time?!
