Great job Kelly! casting looks great. What do you use for the refractory coating? Do you get any surface defects? I have been using plaster of paris and get lots of little surface pin holes. Very turbulent pours etc. Trying to better my lost foam results. Great job again!

I use a commercial coating called PolyCap 600 but thinned, non-setting, drywall joint compound will work nearly as well. If you spritz or dip your foam pattern with a little Dawn dishwashing soap diluted in water, the soap contains Propylene Glycol which is a surfactant, and it will make the coating wet the pattern better lessening the surface tension. A few drops of Dawn in the slurry also helps wetting, flow, and self leveling of the coating whether you are dipping or brushing. If you go to forums.thehomefoundry.org/index.php and the lost foam subforum, you will find more info in my posts about coating and reducing turbulence and lost foam casting in general. Thanks for looking. Kelly
