Locke was supposed to move the island but Ben did it instead. Locke arrives 3 years late in a different time window and doesn't have the time. Even more sad is seeing the repraise of who told Locke he would have to die. What's even sadder is rewatching the series knowing the truth but the viewer can't change the past. What happened, Happened.

Looking at Terry O'Quinn not only puts a smile on my face but at the same time looking at him brings me so much sadness that my eyes will just well up instantly. His character, John Locke, to me, is the most tragic of them all. I love Locke. As for Ben Linus, this fool also thinks he has a purpose but when I see him I can't be mad at him because he isn't a sloppy character. He isn't an idiot one bit. This guy knows what he's doing. He's clever as hell and always a few steps ahead. I've never seen another character on tv that is so certain of his actions that he does it with such justification. This is what I call a perfect character. Yes, his character is a horrible person but you gotta admit, his character is an amazing antagonist. Oh man, I can't wait for the end to all of this and see Nikki and Rana's reaction to both Ben and Locke's character arcs. I really want to hear Nikki's overall take on Ben after they're done reacting. - Yvette

I remember people complaining that Jack was starting to grow a beard in this episode (Meaning that seeing John again *wasn't* the reason for his downward spiral). My interpretation was always that Jack was already having doubts, and was also wracked by guilt over leaving people behind, particularly once he found out Claire was his sister. That had to mess him up, knowing he'd left his own family behind, and had no idea what happened to her. It's not fleshed out on the show, but, just on a human level, and especially for such a control freak as Jack, that he had saved himself but left others behind, people that he cared about, is something that would eat away at him. The strength of his reaction is overcompensation for the gnawing in his breast that Locke is right; and if Locke is right, that would mean Jack made a mistake that he's done nothing to correct, and he's projecting his anger at himself outward towards Locke. Again, this is just my head canon, my analysis. It's not something the show directly addresses. But I think it's a human reaction.

The man in black or the black smoke has an ability to shift his apperance to any deceased person, jack's father (christian) is the guy in black which turns out later to take john locke form, plotting to kill jacob. he shifted to john body to trick benjamin to kill jacob.

You dont have to like Ben as a person. But everyone likes him because he is the ultimate manipulator. His playing of "the game" so to speak is on another level. The only one on the show up until this point to truly throw him for a loop has been John Locke. And it is because John was kept alive for so long and because the island chose him over Ben that Ben chooses to kill him. He got the info he needed and knew the island couldnt protect him there so he took care of the 1 true thorn in his side.

i think it is odd that they discuss who is "good" between ben and charles. why does one have to be good? they both clearly have their own agenda. Just cause one saves john and the other protects the oceanic six doesn't make them the good guys. nice vid. Ben Linus ftw.

My theory is that Ben truly didn’t want to kill Locke and that’s why he saved him; but when Locke said there was no way he was going to let Sun go back to the island (the rule is everyone must go back) you can see Ben’s facial expression change as he realizes with Locke alive he wouldn’t be able to get everybody to go back

LOST season 5 answers guide: 1. The exit point off the island was in that desert. 2. Charles tried to remove or banish Ben in order to have John lead, because he was mad at Ben about banishing him in the first place. 3. Revelation that Ben lied again to Jack in the plane about seeing Locke. 4. The role of the others is revealed in this episode and that is that they were protecting the island and helping or listening to Jacob. 5. The people were moving through time not the island. The island moved when Ben turned the wheel to another location like Eloise said. So Ceasar and the group were in present day 2007 three years after Ben moved the island.

I could never really decide why Ben killed Locke. A) Because he didnt want him helping Charles Widmore's side or B) because hes afraid that if they both went back alive, the island might want Locke and not Ben to be in charge?

Spoilers It was simple, he even explained it to Locke at the end outside the church. Ben: I'm sorry what I did to you John. I was selfish, jealous, I wanted everything you had. John: What did I have? Ben: You was special John, and I wasn't. John: Well if it helps Ben, I forgive you. Ben: Thank you John it does help. It matters more than I can say.

I am rewatching Lost with my girlfriend who never seen Lost before and holy hell I did not take Lockes death well. For first time viewer Locke is alive so while his death is tragic its not permanent. But if you know that Locke later on the island is not real Locke and Lockes death truly is his last moments it is so damn tragic. I never cried before like I did for Lockes death.

After rewatching this, it's more sad because you know Locke really dies like that. We never see the real Locke again, this was it for him and that truly is sad. I really wish the show would have showed his death in a more emotional way because he deserved for fans to mourn the character. And it's really unfortunate this was the end of the real John Locke.

There is another parallel to the accident that leads to the island, what led Jack to take the Oceanic was that he felt guilty about his father's condition, then his father died and took his body with him on the plane, and what led Jack to take the second flight was that he felt guilty for John's death, and took his body on the plane.

We like Ben's character because it's an excellent character, how hard is it to understand? The story would be immensely less interesting if he wasn't in the show. Would we like him in real life? Probably not, but that's not the point. Would you like Darth Vader irl? No. Is he an excellent character? yes. There is a difference. Don't let your feelings tell you if a character is good or not... that's dumb. Oh, and he's one of the good guys, he said it multiple times. lol
