This video explores the phenomenon of Loss of Tail Rotor Efficiency (LTE) in helicopters aiming to educate helicopter pilots on recognising, preventing, and responding to LTE incidents to ensure safer flights.
Three cases of LTE occurrence are discussed:
1. Rotor disk vortices interference with the tail rotor.

    Another fantastic, clear concise tutorial. I was hoping you would add some advice about how to get out of the onset of LTE at the end - and you didn't disappoint 🙂. I liked the advice to practice the foot movements for full left pedal as that will give a pilot a fighting chance to react quickly in what must be a very sudden and very disconcerting situation. Always love your videos... a unique (and rare) mix of knowledgeable, authorititive, genuine and polite.

    You are explaining LTE very well and have chosen a very typical example in the video material. I like the way how you are explaning: As detailled as necessary, not simplifying, but as well not overcomlipcated. So with enough altitude and at the right place withour obstcle in front it should be possible to "fly out" with cyclic forwad input of a LTE situation, similar to flying out of a Vortex Ring State with forward speed?

    Absolutely! Use the power pedal to stop the rotation, lower the collective and fly forwards.

    I have always had this question about two bladed helicopters what would happen if they had the same full articulated system but with two blades only to prevent mast bumping

    Great video as always. For me it looks like the helicopter touches the tree top, where it starts to loose control and develops into LTE?. What do you think?

    @@flyhighytb thanks, ok so coming in to the hover at the end of an approach, strong crosswind from the right, heavily loaded Sikorsky S76. As we slowed down, bringing in the power and left pedal at the usual rate, I could do nothing to stop the aircraft rotating quite rapidly through 90 degrees to the right…… basically it was weather-cocking in to the wind, and fortunately stopped turning once pointing 90 degrees right of where I’d planned it to be. As you so well demonstrate in your video, full left pedal required, to be honest I have no idea how much I used, it may have been full pedal, but it was insufficient to stop the turn. I think instinctively I lowered collective just a little to reduce the power demand, which helped for sure. Luckily the rotation rate, although quite rapid and certainly uncontrolled, didn’t develop further. The funny thing was my colleague beside me thought it was all totally planned to align the aircraft into the adjacent taxiway - I did come clean ! 😃. Every day’s a school day right?     @@EtiRats Interesting information, runing out of left pedal should be considered a different case of LTE, airbus has an excelent video about pedal curve, a little confusing but with de same conclussion of applying full pedal. You can lose tail rotor thrust from a few different sources, wind, your own main rotor vortices, and another relevant factor is your main rotor RPM.

    Hello, I beg to disagree here. LTE will happen as a result of putting yourself in a situation where youre running out of power. Its not some ”vortex” situation that just happens. If you have the power available and you stay ahead of the helicopter, its not going to start spinning. As EASA is calling it ”unanticipated yaw”. What is the unanticipated yaw? If youre going to fly a helicopter you must know the basics. A tailrotor has less efficiency in some winds, yes, some models worse that others(B206 for example) but you should know that and avoid putting yourself in those situations. However if you have power available and stay ahead of the helicopter, it wont happen. I will quote my old instructor, Gordon H, here; ”Its all very feely feely” First you say its a windproblem, then you say hot high heavy. Dont you think that is contradictive? Why is it a problem with the wind? Well usually because hovering out of wind requires more power and most medium-small size helicopters are not very powerful.

    Thank you so much for your comment. I think we do actually agree here. You also say that the tail rotor is less effective in some winds, as explained in detail in the video, and that if you don’t have enough power, which is often the case in hot, high or heavy conditions, you are at risk. 👍
