    My parents were in a crash that involved dynamic rollover in the very early 80s. They were both very lucky to escape with minor injuries. My mum was wearing a helmet and it had a massive dent in it after the accident. They were in the hills and back then it took long time for them to be rescued. The main cause was due to a bad method being taught of bringing in power while still increasing the engine rpm. This caused the helicopter to slide forward and the skid got caught in some bush. After that Hughes eventually changed their flight manual for the 300. Looking back it seems crazy this was a standard method being taught.

    @@flyhighytb my dad was lucky to survive 3 helicopter accidents. Only one was his fault, he hit HT power lines while spraying in the UK (in a Hiller I think). Also you may be interested that my Mum was NZ first female helicopter pilot, first female instructor, and A cat instructor (not sure if that translates there but means she did flight testing of instructors etc). She worked for the NZ CAA for a fair while before retiring. They owned a flight school in NZ.

    Thank you for the very practical explanations. Great choice of the illustrative videos for the examples. I am flying RC helicopters only but had some close calls for dynamic rollover when lifting my helis into a hover - especially when I first started fllying bigger models with much larger rotordisc diameters - especially in gusty winds. Landings with still a bit too much collective after touching the ground with the skids can be as well tricky. Very instructive.

    Great explanation, I dynamically rolled over consistently on almost every flight in the first year of learning to fly scale RC helis, it is now instinctive to fly out of a rollover event and only serious skid sticking would cause it now. I’ve been an obsessive fixed winger all my life but in my 40s I’m finding myself increasingly fascinated by spinny wings. South African?

    Great video again. One question. Do pilots confuse this with ground resonance? The reason I am aksing this is, because both involve lateral motion. So could it be the reason that some pilots do the opposite what you suggested, i.e. lowering the collective to prevent dynamic rollover. If it is easy to confuse with ground resonance, they might well rather raise it with an intention to stop ground resonance, which can accelerate the rate of rotation if the helicopter was in fact in dynamic rollover.

  • @flyhighytb

    @flyhighytb

    7 ай бұрын

    Thanks @aykuttamer8341. This is a great comment and a good question! Although I have not come across this myself, I can see why this could possibly be confused with ground resonance and indeed lifting the collective would accelerate the rollover. It is important to remember that ground resonance is more of a back and forth shaking movement and that rollover is more of a tilting movement.

    Nope. An out of balance washing machine VS a rolling motion - With some articulated helicopters you'll get droop stop pounding - With simi rigid a mast bump, on the ground. In a hover and snagging something it's an uncommanded roll. Lost a few friends with students & bushes. and machines in soft mud and soggy grass

    See that Robinson tail rotor? In the early 80s Frank changed it from a dull black with yellow tips to what you see today. It was Dave & Don Hillberg at Hiser helicopters in Corona Ca, That started that black & white paint scheme. Floyd Hiser asked why we painted it like that... We said run it up, So Floyd watched it as it was run up... "I want all the helicopters that way" 1st Robie in for over haul Frank called Floyd "Why is your Robinson tail rotor painted that way it's not authorized" Floyd said "Run it up" After that all Robinsons were delivered with those white & black tail rotors... Human eyes see contrast before color. Safety was Floyds #1 rule...

    How to gain an instant subscriber and fan: Make a concise video, with no self promotion and a minimal introduction. Make the sound clear and don't add totaly pointless, distracting music (especially if you are trying to impart knowledge). Employ a knowledgeable and engaging person to present it. Edit it well with picture and video inserts to make your point. I have been waiting a long time to be able to say see that in practice! Brilliant content in every way. well there is the debate, lol well bell i think there are a lot more and have been around a lot longer. i have seen robinsons crash at the factory in so cal mast bump seems to bring them down a lot. i know for a fact that bell has a better safety record than robinson. but it is also more money. i have been flying helicopters since 1976, started in the old bell 47 i think. then jet ranger in 1976 also. but i also have over 7000 hours in jet rangers all i will buy. the new bell 505 is a great one. got this one 2 weeks ago factory delivered. easy to start. one button and it lights itself off. but to each their own. i personally donot like the controls of the robinson. they tried to sell me one i got in it and got out. told the salesman to go home. .i had my old 206 sitting there and asked him point blank which one looks better. he left 206 is now in the back of the hanger/ too many hours on the airframe. almost 30000 hours on it. so you tell me how many hours on a robinson before you have to scrap it? my 206 is still flyable. but not going to use it anylonger.

    Center of gravity is usually expressed as center of weight distribution in X/Y axis of the plane created by the fore/aft & lateral centers, basically a point on the "floorplan" of the aircraft. Center of mass simply has vertical mass distribution component included, which is Z axis.. Think of CG as 2 dimensional like a sheet of paper in its representation, and center of mass as 3 dimensional, like a box.. It is good to see the impact of the difference..rollover is the result of unsupported center of mass.. *Much like shortening or taking off one or two legs from one side of a table or chair, leaving CM unsupported beyond the critical angle. ANY lift or power increase increases the sideward roll.. THINK OF A HINGE LAYING FLAT..THE HINGE AXIS REPRESENTS THE "TRIPPING POINT" IF YOU LIFT THE HINGE, IT SWINGS UP & OVER.. DROP THE HINGE, IT LANDS LEVEL.. SO LONG AS CRITICAL ANGLE NOT EXCEEDED. *TRY TO OPEN A DOOR WHILE FIGHTING TO KEEP IT FROM SWINGING ON PIVOT OF HINGES! YOU CAN'T OPEN THE DOOR AND KEEP IT FROM SWINGING! IT WILL SWING MUCH EASIER THAN YOU TRYING TO FORCE THE HINGES TO RELEASE THE DOOR SO IT CAN BE PUSHED OUT EVENLY AND RESPOND "FLAT" (NOT SWINGING)

    Dynamic rollover is a little tricky to understand at first, hovering helicopter is like a pendulum, but that all changes when there is ground contact.. any lift in rotor system literally is like pushing a door open when a skid is caught or stuck..if you don't take that constant force of lift out, it just keeps pushing the door further. Sideslip landing dynamic rollover is literally tripping! *TWO-STEP STABLE PICKUP, *SETTLE FROM A STABLE HOVER OR STRAIGHT FORWARD RUNNING LANDING 🚁👍
