Hello, I beg to disagree here. LTE will happen as a result of putting yourself in a situation where youre running out of power. Its not some ”vortex” situation that just happens. If you have the power available and you stay ahead of the helicopter, its not going to start spinning. As EASA is calling it ”unanticipated yaw”. What is the unanticipated yaw? If youre going to fly a helicopter you must know the basics. A tailrotor has less efficiency in some winds, yes, some models worse that others(B206 for example) but you should know that and avoid putting yourself in those situations. However if you have power available and stay ahead of the helicopter, it wont happen. I will quote my old instructor, Gordon H, here; ”Its all very feely feely” First you say its a windproblem, then you say hot high heavy. Dont you think that is contradictive? Why is it a problem with the wind? Well usually because hovering out of wind requires more power and most medium-small size helicopters are not very powerful.
Thank you so much for your comment. I think we do actually agree here. You also say that the tail rotor is less effective in some winds, as explained in detail in the video, and that if you don’t have enough power, which is often the case in hot, high or heavy conditions, you are at risk. 👍
The gazelle on the roof top was a very early version with the rigid type of landing gear. From s/n 1077 and higher, all gazelles had the flexible gear. The rigid gear was never a problem but the pilot had to position a handle to the rear for landing and fwd for flight. This handle locked one side of the MGB flex plate just to break the resonance frequency. Like I said it was never a problem but some pilots forgot to put the handle to the rear and the chance of a ground resonance was possibly higher. Also what I can wee on the video is that the pilot sat on the left seat (which is not permitted for solo flights). This event may also contributed to the ground resonance developing.

Another fantastic, clear concise tutorial. I was hoping you would add some advice about how to get out of the onset of LTE at the end - and you didn't disappoint 🙂. I liked the advice to practice the foot movements for full left pedal as that will give a pilot a fighting chance to react quickly in what must be a very sudden and very disconcerting situation. Always love your videos... a unique (and rare) mix of knowledgeable, authorititive, genuine and polite.

You are explaining very well why most pilots react in the first monent in the wrong way raising the collective pitch when they feel a sudden loss of altitude. Good to know how to avoid a Vortex Ring State situations with avoiding too few airpeed, too how decending rates and tailwind. And it was amazing to see how fast you can end this state with flying out forwards or sideways. I am just flying RC helis, and they have so much power in relation to the weight that we don't experience such problems. But even though I am avoiding tail wind landings and take offs because I feel much less control.

@@flyhighytb thanks, ok so coming in to the hover at the end of an approach, strong crosswind from the right, heavily loaded Sikorsky S76. As we slowed down, bringing in the power and left pedal at the usual rate, I could do nothing to stop the aircraft rotating quite rapidly through 90 degrees to the right…… basically it was weather-cocking in to the wind, and fortunately stopped turning once pointing 90 degrees right of where I’d planned it to be. As you so well demonstrate in your video, full left pedal required, to be honest I have no idea how much I used, it may have been full pedal, but it was insufficient to stop the turn. I think instinctively I lowered collective just a little to reduce the power demand, which helped for sure. Luckily the rotation rate, although quite rapid and certainly uncontrolled, didn’t develop further. The funny thing was my colleague beside me thought it was all totally planned to align the aircraft into the adjacent taxiway - I did come clean ! 😃. Every day’s a school day right? @@EtiRats Interesting information, runing out of left pedal should be considered a different case of LTE, airbus has an excelent video about pedal curve, a little confusing but with de same conclussion of applying full pedal. You can lose tail rotor thrust from a few different sources, wind, your own main rotor vortices, and another relevant factor is your main rotor RPM.
You are explaining LTE very well and have chosen a very typical example in the video material. I like the way how you are explaning: As detailled as necessary, not simplifying, but as well not overcomlipcated. So with enough altitude and at the right place withour obstcle in front it should be possible to "fly out" with cyclic forwad input of a LTE situation, similar to flying out of a Vortex Ring State with forward speed?
Absolutely! Use the power pedal to stop the rotation, lower the collective and fly forwards.

I have asked on other channels explaining VRS before, but never got an answer. How does VRS act in a coaxial rotor design ? Since each rotor is rotating in the opposite direction, would the vortexes cancel each other out, making VRS impossible in a coaxial rotor design ?
That’s a very good question. I would imagine that VRS is still possible in a coaxial rotor design because there is still a downwash and VRS happens when the rotors get caught up in this turbulent downwash.
I honestly have to say that your explanation of how complex it is to hover and to fly a helicopter and how all three main controls have influence on eachother was the best I have ever seen. You are explaining complicated stuff in a very understandable way without simplyfying. Really great. One question is on my mind for a long time: Does the T-shaped movable cyclic stick does feel very different than the "classic" and somehow "fixed" cyclic control of a Hughes or Bell heli? I can imagine that the rotation movement in the (almost) middle of the T gives another feel. Does a Bell or Hughes pilot need a while to get used to this cyclic control? Or the other way around? I am flying RC helis and that it's not really simple makes my love and passion for flying them so deep! It's a lifelong learning experience.

Thank you for the very practical explanations. Great choice of the illustrative videos for the examples. I am flying RC helicopters only but had some close calls for dynamic rollover when lifting my helis into a hover - especially when I first started fllying bigger models with much larger rotordisc diameters - especially in gusty winds. Landings with still a bit too much collective after touching the ground with the skids can be as well tricky. Very instructive.

well there is the debate, lol well bell i think there are a lot more and have been around a lot longer. i have seen robinsons crash at the factory in so cal mast bump seems to bring them down a lot. i know for a fact that bell has a better safety record than robinson. but it is also more money. i have been flying helicopters since 1976, started in the old bell 47 i think. then jet ranger in 1976 also. but i also have over 7000 hours in jet rangers all i will buy. the new bell 505 is a great one. got this one 2 weeks ago factory delivered. easy to start. one button and it lights itself off. but to each their own. i personally donot like the controls of the robinson. they tried to sell me one i got in it and got out. told the salesman to go home. .i had my old 206 sitting there and asked him point blank which one looks better. he left 206 is now in the back of the hanger/ too many hours on the airframe. almost 30000 hours on it. so you tell me how many hours on a robinson before you have to scrap it? my 206 is still flyable. but not going to use it anylonger.

ya know robinson helicopters have killed more people than any bell has.or any other mfg. i fly a 2024 505 i have owned jet rangers for over 45 years. never had the problem you are discussing. arent robinsons banned in austrailia? too many fatal accidents besides they look funny with that tall mast.but to each their own

Which helicopter killed President Piñera of Chile?
It’s a good question but I’m certain it was not the helicopter that killed him. He was flying a Robinson R44. The most probable cause was bad weather conditions.
