Matador literally means killer. But in this context, the bad refers to corrupt politicians in Argentina at the time (90s/00s) who silenced opposing views that even led to abduction/murder

I think the term Matador is much more nuanced than "killer" or "murderer." It might be that "fighter" is a more accurate translation in this context. It is an epithet of honor and power. El Matador is a heroic figure. Matador is used to mean bullfighter. It is also an epithet given to popular sports stars, as someone above has pointed out. I lived in Mexico when this song was new and very popular. Also popular was a football star they called El Matador, (Luis Hernández?) He was very famous and well loved. In fact, until I learned more Spanish, I thought this song was about him. Now I think what it is really about the spirit of the people of Latin America who have fought against Fascist dictatorships, and refused to be silenced.

@@chuctanundaspiderbone5407 Though I am not Argentinian, and know almost nothing about the rythm Murga, I should say that my very first reaction back in 1993 was that this had a little Flamenco influence, and it was a pun of Matador (bullfighter and killer, in Spanish has both meanings). Sounds a bit like a crowd shouting in the heat of a Corrida (bullfight) "Matador !!!". But of course is very political and about a revolutionary fighting against a dictatorship and expecting to be killed by law enforcement any minute. Which could be the story of so many Argentinians, Uruguayans and Chileans during those years under Fascist dictatorships. I'm Peruvian by the way.

Matador" (Spanish for "Killer", it means "bullfighter" in Spain) is a song written by Flavio Cianciarulo, bass player of Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, a rock band from Argentina. It was first released in their 1993 album Vasos Vacíos and it is considered their signature song since the song topped the charts all across Hispanic America.

I can't believe how calm you can stay with this music. I've played this song at parties in Germany(!) when things got a bit dull to get people into the mood again. It never failed. Notably also with people, who don't speak Spanish and have no connection to Latin America. However, if you do speak Spanish and get the lyrics, it's still a 1000 times better (and the video makes sense).

Alongside "Mal Bicho", "Manuel Santillan, El León" and "Desapariciones" (a cover of Rubén Blades' song), El Matador is one of the Cadillacs song about the oppression and forced disappearances during the years of military dictatorship across the Southern Cone, particularly National Reorganization Process in Argentina. The song narrates the story of a revolutionary ("El Matador") hunted down by law enforcement from the revolutionary's POV. The song also references Víctor Jara, a Chilean folksinger and supporter of the Allende government who was kidnapped, tortured and assassinated shortly after the Chilean coup of 1973 by military officials loyal to the dictator Augusto Pinochet.

I'm really glad you've been sincere, but respectful in your reaction. The video is packed with the Argentine idiosyncrasy and without cultural context is must be really strange to see. That song was culturally revolutionary for the whole South American continent.

[Intro] They're looking for you, Murderer! Imagine a Spanish speaking person who listens to an English song but doesnt get it because they dont get the words or the context. But maybe the song is charged with meaning and provides a context. Well this is the case. Except that you just dont speak Spanish or know the idiosyncracy of most Latin countries whose people were savagely oppressed, persecuted and made to disappear if their words opposed those of the dictator in power. Victor Jara,a Chilean poet was one of them. In Argentina it's said we had 30.000 people gone missing by the military in cruel ways in the 70s.

This type of music obviously mixed with rock, but the other part is music that we inherited from the Afros who came to Argentina back in the late 1800s, we call it candombe, which I mean that despite the time it is still valid. Thanks for appreciating it. 💙🤍💙

The song is about a revolutionary who is chased by the police, who eventually kill him. In addition, the Chilean singer-songwriter Víctor Jara is named in the lyrics, making a reference to the dictatorship of General Pinochet.

This song is played when Nicaraguan boxer Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga walks to the ring.[citation needed] "El Matador" was the intro song for #1 tennis player in the world Rafael Nadal in the 2010 US Open Night Sessions.[citation needed] This song is part of the soundtrack of the movie The Matador. This song is used in the movie Grosse Pointe Blank and is on the soundtrack as well. The University of Southern California's "Spirit of Troy" Marching Band, always played "El Matador" when their USC Trojans football quarterback Mark Sanchez entered the field. The song Single-Bilingual by British duo Pet Shop Boys features a sample throughout the entire length of their song.
