Loosing Power Steering Fluid But Can’t Find The Leak? Check this!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Sometimes power steering leaks can be difficult to find, especially if you can't see a leak. In this video I go over a scenario that can elude many people that are constantly having to fill their power steering system but have no outside evidence of a fluid leak. And this scenario is a leaking rack and pinion that is leaking into the bellow boots. As explained in the video there is a lot of empty space inside the bellow boots that can hold a pretty good amount of power steering fluid before actually leaking out externally. So, if you have a hydraulic power steering system that has no evidence of a fluid leak and you are having to add fluid because the fluid level is going down then It's probably not a bad idea to check for evidence of power steering fluid on the inside of the bellow boots on either side of the power steering rack and pinion.
Note: this video does not go into great detail on how to properly remove and reinstall the rack and pinion bellow boots. Also, this video is has not explanation on how to properly and safely lift and support your vehicle. Please obtain this information from a reputable repair manual.
Note: It is recommended to wear protective gloves when handling power steering fluid. In the video I was not wearing protective gloves when my hand came into contact with power steering fluid. It is not ok to handle power steering fluid without protective gloves. See MSDS for more information pertaining to power steering fluid and potential health affects.

Great informational video. Quick question. My power steering went out and I noticed that there's a small tear on the inner tie rod boot and starts leaking power sterring fluid. I recently replaced the Rack and Pinion, and I'm wondering if the leak is now caused by the failed rack and Pinion seal or is it because of the tear from the boot. Is it normal for the fluid inside the boot?

Is it possible for the top power steering hose could be leaking if it shows on the outside of the hose?

I’d say it’s possible. Try cleaning it and then seeing if it comes back.
